Full Backs!

Juliano Belletti is the kind of player that Chelsea have needed for a long time, a full back who knows how to push forward in devastating fashion. Believe me there is nothing more satisfying for me than to see a marauding full back.

The club is blessed as it has 3 very effective full backs in Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge and Belletti who love to bomb forward. This provides an extra dimension and an impetuous to the attack, which opposition teams fear. In fact I believe in Brazil the best overall football players were full backs. These guys could play midfield, wing positions and even as strikers. A high quality full back has pace, can tackle well, can mark well, can pass well, dribble, try tricks, shoot, cross and also has to be at least decent in the air.

Look at Lahm, he played in midfield against England at Wembley and still outclassed the English midfield...Zambrotta like many full backs was a winger in his earlier days. The versatility, which is crucial in modern football, which full backs provide is invaluable.

If you look around Europe you will find plenty of high quality players in other positions but not enough full backs of quality. In fact they are so few in numbers that I can name them now (remember high quality) -

Clichy, A.Cole, Evra, Abidal, Zambrotta, Sagna, Sagnol, Lahm, Alves, Maicon and well that`s about it.

Now some of you may wonder as to why I have not included Neville, Ramos,(in Mrs Merlin's case) Ferriera, well the answer as they are very good defensively but that`s about it. They are what I like to call typical English full backs, just defend and maybe maraud forward and with luck the ball may touch my feet...Lescott anybody.

So you can see that there not many real quality full backs. Although there are some decent to semi good ones around like - Miguel, Boswinga, Lopez, Bridgey, Rafinha...but still far not enough. I think this explains as to why Sevilla and their thug of a President wanted so much for Alves. And I for one really hope that we consider getting him or Schalke's Rafinha in the summer.

Good football, especially in South America, has been always about the use of full backs. Without them you cannot possibly put pressure on the opposition. For years the sight of Cafu and Roberto Carlos created fear in teams.

So Belletti and Bridgey may not have been on my list of quality full backs but they are still a precious commodity and it`s an honor to see them marauding in opposition halves.

If we truly aim to play great football, then how we use our full backs will be crucial. And as for Ashley Cole, do not worry he will come good eventually.

I wouldn't say that Abidal is a top fullback, he has looked pretty average this season
blueboyz
blueboyz i was skeptical about abidal from the beginning...but i have seen him play for lyon and he can very effective..in fact he has to be good..otherwise how can keep clichy and evra out of the french team.

"maraud forward and with luck the ball may touch my feet...Lescott anybody." yes indeed with 2/7 his goals coming off his foot.
EvertonMike
I have to say that I'm greatly impressed by Belletti. I didn't want him to come, but what a great signing it turned out to be for 3.75m. Still, I want Alves (pleaseeee)in the summer, if not then, Rafinha would be great.
Fan of Blues
Why are you so convinced about Ashely Cole? He has had one or 2 decent games in a Chelsea shirt and that is it. I would be happy if we got rid now even without a replacement. He signifies a lot of what is wrong with the premiership, he earns a lot but does nothing. Bridgey all the way, he has passion and comitment and can cross a ball!
funkyav
EvertonMike..mate pure fullbacks are supposed skillful players who need to dribble, cross and all that sort of stuff too..lescott is a centre half playing lb..so what he has achieved is pretty good..a bit like sergio ramos and he is world class defender but not a great full back..!!
essientric
Ashely Cole convinces me based on his record..as you might noticed not all full backs on my list are in greatest of form but based on what they have achieved and their abilities..a cole remains considering his distribution, vision and defensive abilities one of the top full backs in europe, even though we have not seen enough of his first 2 qualities in a blue shirt.bridgey has my full respect and is one of my fave players at chelsea but i am realistic enough to realize that he is not world class, but he is still a good full bak who is in good form at the moment..but at the very highest level against the likes of messi, ronaldo, qauresma sort of players i would rather play a cole than bridgey.
essientric
i've really grown to like belletti too. there's no sense in continuing to bring up dani alves' name. ivanovic is the likely candidate to fight belletti for the RB position, so alves really isn't a part of our plans anymore, i don't think. belletti has grown into the team, made us much stronger going forward on the right side. he's probably got another two good years in him at least, and maybe that's avram's approach to the RB position--let belletti help the team, then watch ivanovic develop into our future RB. as for ashley cole, well, i still prefer bridgey!
RadioactiveD
With luck the ball may touch my feat is a ridiculas comment for joleon though, he scores mainly from headers and when playing left back if you've ever seen him dribble it's like a charging rhino. And maybe you should considor even when he was fit moyes prefered lescott out of position at lescott over baines, who was being dubbed for england when at wigan. In my opinion lescott was the best player on the pitch again last night keeping anelka in his back pocket, and your comments, are frankly, ridiculas.
EvertonMike
fair points essientric but I just dont see it with Cole. His vision and distribution are non existant in a chelsea shirt. I hope I am proved wrong but at the moment Bridgey is streets ahead.
funkyav
for all those who slag of cole...just flashback two years back..our lb problem was so bad that players like gary o neil were looking dangerous one v one against our lb's..it was an area of sincere concern which players like del horno were unable to rectify..i think the importance of a cole will only be realized by remembering those moments...its very easy for people to say that we miss guddy and duff..without realizing that they were let go due to some poor and inconsistent performances..and frankly they have not done any better at their new clubs, which is further backing to decisions to let them go.
essientric
our lb position was a problem because Bridgey kept on gettign injured. Agree that Duff provided more cover on that side though. Malouda wasnt grea tlast night but grew into the game later on and put Cole through for his goal with a great ball. Lets hope he continues to get better though becasu I havent been very impressed with him recently.
funkyav
EvertonMike-mate i have at no point criticized lescott..he is a fine player who is doing well at the moment..but it was about the use of full backs with limited ability...now this is not an insult but a fact....the english system over the years has been to play d minded full backs who defend and are great at set pieces...you look at stuart pearce, our own steve clarke and now lescott..also since mentioned moyes..i find moyes a very cautious manager..he prefers to play a defense based game with full backs more focussed on defense than attack..hibbert,neville and lescott all are a testament to this and the fact that he does not play baines in the position is a sign that moyes is a d manager not that lecott is a better player than baines...when capello chooses his england team a fully fit baines on top form will more chance than a fully fit lescott on top form..trust me on that and its not lescott's fault.
essientric
Sure Ashley hasn't produced the same form of his Arsenal days, but he's still on of the best, if not the best, left backs in the world. His defending is great but he doesn't go forward as he did at Arsenal, but that doesn't mean that he isn't a great player. A couple of years ago, we couldn't depend on single left back (Gallas was the best playing there), now we've two great left back so just be thankful for that.
Fan of Blues
We have no need for Alves anymore and I don't think Chelsea will be interested unless the fee goes down significantly. Abidal has been very good at Barcelona and is highly thougt of n Spain. Belletti has been better in Chelsea than ever in Barcelona, love him. Was good defensively too yesterday. Cole has not shown the big why yet, but remember how he eradicated C Ronaldo in the FA Cup. Maybe Cole is at his best when he is not noticed? Nice article.

essientric - where would the likes of Le Saux come in your opinion in your ratings?
merlin
or even Steve Clarke in his prime!
merlin
MERLIN MATE YOU HAVE TO POST THE MAKA INTERVIEW ON THE WEBSITE...TOP NOTCH STUFF!!!!! http://www.chelseafc.com/page/NewsHomePage/0,,10268~1224159,00.html
essientric
Completely agree about Belletti. I wasn't pleased with his signing either, but he's greatly impressed. I think Lahm is the absolute best when it comes to full backs, full stop.
entertainmentwh
Le Saux was in his prime the best lb in england and would probably just about make the top..would have been touch and go..remember we are comparing him people like cafu here..also clarkey was a player i never saw in his prime..only started supported the club in 97'..so based on what i saw and heard about him he was a solid full back..the sort of player who goes about his job loyally and fans love him for that..a bit in the gary neville bracket..!!!but he is a thorough chelsea man and i have great regards for the work he is doing for the club.
essientric
Albert Ferrer - how would he rate! Or Super Dan Petrescu?
merlin
I've just read it essientric and it's great. I just love that guy.
Fan of Blues
Albert Ferrer was a extremely reliable and i daresay classy full back..very similar to ferriera in style but much more reliable..as for Dan Petrescu..i think he was first really good full back we had...had one hell of a shot and loved to bomb forward...i think people at club do not give him enough credit for the sexy football that chelsea played under guilitt and vialli..he was truly a great for chelsea but again merlin, unfortunately i will never be able to say whether would have made the top list as we never played amongst the elite..but all these guys honestly would have been regulars in the current team..sometimes the quality of the team rubs on the players..and Dan Petrescu who i am calling a chelsea legend would have been european legend in this team who knows?
essientric
Thanks for the link essientric. All hail Maka!
Blu Soulja
Maka, Respect.

OH MAN MAKA MAKA MAKA!!!! wat a player.. absolutely top notch, now thats class my friend..
carefreeblue
i read the interview and his guy is pure class very unselfish.
kaybee
entertainmentwh--you're right, Lahm is incredible and still very young. Little would please me more than to see him on our squad. Barca supposedly want him and Bayern has already scoffed at even the slightest speculation. They understand his value.
RadioactiveD
dan the man has to b ot bets ever full back
MrDax
What was Cole's record at Arsenal that made him so great? In fact, he didn't have a particularly good record at all, apart from the fact that Arsenal fans used to like him because he came through their youth system (instead of getting trafficked as a kid like everyone else).
Squiddy
Squiddy mate..one question what do you mean by cole's record at arsenal..you definitely do not mean goals..assists-well he had the highest no.assists by a full back for arsenal for two-3 seasons..the guy was by far the best lb in the league...a part of the so called 'invincibles'...without doubt he was in 2003-04 season the best lb in europe...so i do not know what are you playing at...look i understand chelsea fans who are frustrated by his performances in a blue shirt, especially in an attacking sense..even the guy has admitted he has been rubbish...but he has defended well..he is an exceptional defensive full back, especially in the box...he just needs to get sharper pushing forward and then we all will get behind him..but after his antics after forcing his move from arsenal i think nobody will ever adore him..unless his wins england the world cup ofcourse then he again becomes an amazing player..talk about hypocrites.
essientric
I think A. Cole said it best in an interview he gave recently. "You can never please everybody. When you attack, they say you don't defend and when you defend, they say you don't attack." A full-back who is as good at attacking as he is defending (and vice versa) is rare. A.Cole has been defensively solid, and with the attacking football that Grant is trying to employ, I'm sure he'll get back into top form.
Blu Soulja
well blu soulja..maybe its me..but i always believed in case of full backs ,attack is the best form of defense...ofcourse now and then, a maldini comes and throws water on my theory.
essientric
best LB in Europe in 03/4? We didn't sign him until 2006! No-one haad much expectation for him in Euro2004 and he was injured for much of the next 2 seasons before we got him. That's why Arse had blooded Clichy by that time and were quite happy for Cole to leave. Now there's no doubt they were right. I have a variation on the Cole quote. When he attacks he can't attack and when he defends he can't defend. His best position is on the bench watching Wayne Bridge.
Squiddy
In my opinion Eboue is way better than Sagna. The only problem with him though is that his temperament is suspect.
