Chelsea compete for Lyon duo

Chelsea are linked to Lyon`s striker, Karim Benzema and winger Hatem Ben Arfa. The problem is that they will face competition from Barça, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Lyon have a capacity to sell their key players and then grow new ones. When Michael Essien left for Chelsea, he was replaced in central midfield by Mamadou Diarra. Diarra lasted one season before Madrid picked him off. Then Lyon sold their winger, Florent Malouda, to Chelsea.

Lyon`s strikeforce has been replaced by a deadly duo, Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa, who have exploded into the French national team. They have also attracted the coveted glances of clubs even bigger than Lyon.

Inevitably, since the pair are French, Arsenal have been linked. The Spanish giants also; Barça and Real Madrid are looking for their next galactico signings. When it comes to throwing money around, Chelsea certainly don`t need very much invitation, they are on the list.

The trouble is that all these people will be dealing with Lyon`s mentalist president, Jean-Michel Aulas, the man who redefines hardball negotiating.

It would appear that Manchester United are trying to steal a march on everyone else, and have tabled an offer, says the Spanish press (who are disappointed that Manchester United have barged past Barça). Apparently Manchester United`s offer is for €60 million for the pair, or a healthy £40 million.

Aulas has helpfully confirmed the contacts with Manchester United. He also stated (in the Sun) that 'Benzema and Ben Arfa won`t be leaving Lyon for the next two years. We want to build our future with them." He then added that "if Ferguson wants to swap Cristiano Ronaldo for Ben Arfa, we could talk about that, but they will have to give us some money as well".

As well as looking forward to another long-running transfer saga involving Lyon, we have to admit that, should Chelsea really be interested, they could face a level of competition that we simply can`t overcome. Certainly the pair are sensational, helping Lyon to where they are now, i.e. cruising to a 7th successive Ligue 1 title. They have also both been called up for France in the last 12 months (Ben Arfa refusing an offer to play for Tunisia instead). The pair are both 20, and have a huge future ahead of them.

It will take some serious money to prise the pair away from Lyon. As well as the usual battle when it comes to negotiating with Aulas, the pair are just about the hottest prospects in European football right now.

Oh man, I'm not interested in another long, drawn-out transfer saga. The Presidential race is more than enough!
entertainmentwh
both are class acts.....we have malouda as bait....we should give him back to lyon plus 15m for benzema....ben arfa is top qaulity aswell
MrDax
Guess they're as good as ours then.
Blu Soulja
Benzema is top class and I would love it if we cant get him, but for some reason I feel that he's more attracted by the likes of Milan, Barca and the team that wants every player on the planet Real Madrid. As for Ben Arafa, I've not see a lot of him so I can't make up my mind.
Fan of Blues
They are both Genius.......... Believe me..........
FloG
Are they on Pro Evo?
JonLFC
jonlfc yea they are.....not sure how good they are as i have never been lyon or france
MrDax
They are on FIFA as well and they progress to become top players.
Fan of Blues
Yet again we are linked with the players that everyone else wants! What the feck does Arnesen do for all the money he's payed, read who's hot in the Sun? Why can't we be after original talent? Here's one from me "Eren Derdiyok", he;s the young midfielder who scored against England for Switzerland the other day. I thought he looked quite tasty! And that was a great goal he scored. It can't be that difficult to scout. Gis' a job Roman!!!
Bumps
I'll have to check them out for my master league!
JonLFC
If Lyon can grow new ones why don't we simply sack FA and get the Lyon youth scouts on board?
merlin
One dark cloud though - didn't Lyon supply us with Malouda!
merlin
That's an idea that I fully support, merlin.
Fan of Blues
I still think that Malouda can come good.
Fan of Blues
malouda isn't terrible, he has some good delivery, just needs that J cole, or Robben style of being able to terroise defenders
pulse
Is this one going to continue until the transfer window swings shut at the beginning of next season??
Blue is the colour
Pulse, you are right, Malouda isn't THAT bad. BITC, don't they always?
entertainmentwh
Malouda, Ben-Haim and Makelele plus £40m will do it. Seems like a good bit of business to me. :)
OLASAL
first invest crazily in the youth system and then spend more crazily for a couple of highly talented youngsters.....yup, sounds like Chelsea!!
chelseaforever
we should give them back malouda plus swp, benhaim, pizarro, shevchenko, sidwell, and swp plus 10 mil for the pair.
truebluetay
I thought SIlly Season was over. Can't we make Lyon our farm club. Every Lyon talent is to end up in Chelsea, or we sell them our surplus.
Lindy
i don't see this happening at all...
RadioactiveD
Truebluetay, SWP? No. I think we should offer them Pizarro, Sidwell and Malouda for them, if not, throw in some money. The two of them rock and would be amazing. I say we give it everything we have for them
Riessy
Here is a news flash - no team of quality is interested in Pizzaro, Ben Haim or Sidwell. Certainly not Lyon. Doubtful Lyon would even take Malouda back, unless it was for 1/2 of what we payed them last year for him. Benzema has no interest in coming to Chelsea.
Drogstark
give malouda back to lyon, certainly would not decrease the quality of our squad whatsoever lol. Benzema and ben arfa ar quality but they are young, it all depends on how they adapt to EPL football and their lifestyle. So true drogstark why would Lyon want Pizza, bhoula haim or sidd
carefreeblue
There isnt anyone I would rther want at Chelsea then those two. Remember we allready got a huge french speaking coallition within the squad so they would be able to adapt
makelele
yeah but we dont want o become the next french national team!!
chelseaforever
We'll need a striker, and Benzema certainly match the profile (strong and direct). His playing style also fits very well with our 4-3-3-system, playing in front of two wingers (rather than the boring 4-4-2). Question; is Benzema really dependent on this Ben Arfa guy? After all, we already have wingers to go...
Maestrinho
WHY be greedy. surely the chance of securing only 1 of the 2 are much higher, and im sure that AULAS would be much happier at the prospect of only losing 1 of the 2.
SMOKIEJACK
if man utd get benzema then unites will b unstoppable......why is it man utd buy young attacking players while we buy robots?
MrDax
Chelsea's growing rep for not using their talent right will make it hard for us to get young players. Except that everyone knows that Chelsea always pay 25%+ for all players, just because we can.
Lindy
Do you guys really think that given the choice of Barca, Madrid, ManUre, Arsenal, Chelsea, he 'd choose Chelsea? I'm sure he's going to say I want to move to ManUre or Arsenal or Barca because they play good football. One more reason we need some sexyness in our play.
Blu Soulja
all we need is two players that can spark our blunt attack
MrDax
MD-we are buying robots because the club's transfer policy has been set like this.
chelseaforever
i know thats why we need a change! thats what more article was all about......but people dont understand why we should sell certain players to get this change
MrDax
well lets see wat is grant's take on the changes needed in the team, if any. he will surely want to assert his imprint on the team.
chelseaforever
Heaven help us.
