The United Inquest Files - #5

The United Inquest Files - #5

Over the past few months, we have been debating over what needs to be done and what should be our approach, in order to arrest an alarming slump in form. I've collected a few of the ideas that have been mentioned and then revisited them in context of yesterday's painful defeat against Manchester United.

Take a look:

THE IDEA: We need to go 4-4-2 with Anelka and Drogba!

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED: For 45 minutes yesterday, we played both Anelka and Drogba together. Anelka was reduced to a peripheral role while Drogba was at his wasteful and disinterested best. And to top it off, we did not have a single shot on target. Van Der Sar could have taken a nap between the sticks.

THE IDEA: Drop Deco

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED: Again, we played the entire second half yesterday minus Deco. It's fair to say that his form is miserable, but did his removal have any sort of positive impact on the game for us?

THE IDEA: We need Terry and Carvalho together to steady the defence.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED: We conceded 3 goals. If it were any other defender with Terry, say Alex or Ivanovic, we would be longing for the return of our first choice centre-back.

THE IDEA: On his day, Drogba is the most fearsome forward in the game.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED: This was a game in which Didier Drogba could have redeemed himself for the Champions League misdemeanour. But it wasn't to be. Did he even have one shot on target?

THE IDEA: Our midfield is one of the best in Europe.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED: The fact that our midfielders failed to dominate the opposition's midfield consisting of Park and Fletcher, says it all. No disrespect to them, but surely you'd expect Ballack and Lampard to do better than those two.

Simply put, I'm not sure of anything right now. The above ideas are supposed to be 100% correct and true. But today, I can't help but think that maybe the obvious isn't really what works for us nowadays.

Deco wasn't actually dropped second-half, he picked up a knock apparently. Although he didn't have such a bad game in the first period, I didn't think.

FIVE Inquest files already? Surely things couldnt be that bad.....?
12/01/2009 16:01:00
They are bad-trust me. The strength of CFC was doing well against big guns. Yesterday we looked like the 22 balls were missing. Mourinho must be thinking which team he was watching.
12/01/2009 17:57:00
well said...complete agree wid u
12/01/2009 19:09:00
Mourinho would have been as ashamed of that performance as the rest of us. FU - Our season is fast going down the drain, so yes, it is that bad.
12/01/2009 19:09:00
Our midfield did dominate them for the whole first half. Then Deco came off and we went a man down in the midfield. That said, the service to the strikers was awful. How you expect Drogba to score without help from the midfield, I don't quite know?

another bad result against Southend the series will go on 7,8,9. .fantastic points & to be fair I think there are some mental problems: Ego,panicking after conceding goals, lack of hunger, concentration etc. With right mentality average player can play world class & a world class can be crap with not being mentally 100% happened to Drogba.Wished to kick his ass after he smiled shøoting miles away.

12/01/2009 20:19:00
Yes another great piece & it really shows we are passing a very bad time. Its interesting how we shouted & none of them seemed to work.MERLIN PLZ KEEP THIS ARTICLE TOP OF ALL i want as many as people read this article & what they have to say!I will say lets have patience & lets see what the PROFESSIONAL r thinking to do right now?
12/01/2009 20:42:00
FU, 10 inquest files would not even cover it!
12/01/2009 22:19:00
Oh so many untidy, careless How on earth did poor Di Santo end up having to mark one of the top strikers in the world as Berbatov scored? Were JT and Riccy still busy telling themselves how much they had missed playing together?
12/01/2009 23:58:00
I just noticed something: why don't we mark the goal posts anymore during corner kicks?
13/01/2009 07:26:00
Thanks for the kind words, people! My debut went well, then. :)
13/01/2009 08:41:00
bluekaw, mate, simply brilliant! It fecked up my ideology completely! I was endorsing for most of these, I'm afraid.

Sorry for few comments - too busy here. Article is correct (most others were completely wrong). I'll comment again when I have more time or when I think a good point has been made. This is the only one up to now.
