Chelsea - City Player Gets It So Wrong!

With Manchester City seemingly intent on buying half of our squad, they already have Tal Ben Haim, Wayne Bridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips on their books and are still intent on pursuing John Terry, there`s a degree of rivalry building between the two.

In fairness there`s always been some sort of rivalry probably started when Ken Bates and Peter Swales were at the helm. However, with both clubs having received a massive injection of cash, our paths, according to some, are starting to mirror each others.

Or are they?

Nestling in the tabloids today is an interesting quote form the Manchester City player, Martin Petrov who has remarked,

"Before Chelsea got their investment they were no better than we are now so we know that if we spend well we can challenge for trophies and titles."

Now this lad seriously needs to take a history lesson!

Before Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea had established themselves as a top six side, we`d won the FA Cup in 1997 ad 2000 and we`d won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1998 as well as the European Super Cup against mighty Real Madrid.

In the season immediately prior to Roman taking over we`d guaranteed Champions League football courtesy of an atmospheric 2-1 victory over Liverpool, on the last day of the season.

So let`s compare that to City shall we!

In the immediate years before they had a lorry-load of blank cheques fall into their laps they dallied around in the lower divisions, they almost lost a play-off final to mighty Gillingham and when eventually promoted they struggle dot make an impact.

There`s been no Wembley / Cardiff appearances, there`s been only a UEFA Cup jaunt courtesy of the 'Fair Play League` and in there fist campaign since that massive cash injection they failed to qualify for the Europa League let alone the Champions League.

Compare that to Romans first year in charge - our highest ever Premier League placing (at the time) and a scintillating Champions League run whereby we almost went all the way!

Like we said Mr Petrov, please do your research next time!

It's a damn shame when people start to compare us with City. We actually managed to break in the top four before being mega-rich. We replaced Leeds on that top four.
k_chelski
Look, no offence, but what do you care? Either the player is full of *****, in which case you're dignifying his remarks by commenting on them, or he's a little closer to the mark than you like to admit. The day we get dragged into onebloodyupmanship with City, then you'll know things are really going down the tube.
rjh
yet another set of supporters in city that are going to hate you big headed know all chelski fans , ur just a small club that got lucky just like city so why u think ur better than them is beyond the rest of the prem......... F?????CK OFF CHELSEA FC , YOU HAVE GOT NO HISTORY ....................SMALL CLUB WI PLASTIC FLAGS..............

Ched you are demented....an obvious Liverpool fan...its about here and now in footie - not what you may have won 20 years ago - Chelsea will remain one of the worlds most succesful clubs...Man City will see Arsenal off....

I'd not ***** off Petrov, he's been known to blow a gasket... ;)

Not worth commenting on. Oops!

He better thinks about his position in the club.I don't blame him. When so many City fans think we weree equal or City is even better comparing that two takeover times shows just how ignorant and stupid some of City fans are!LOL!!!!!!!!!
Saimon_blues
Obviously a serious lack of knowledge on Mr Petrov's behalf, like you say merlin. We're not saying we're a bigger club than City, but we were a top-four side before Mr Abramovich arrived, not floundering around in mid-table obscurity.
daspecial1
This seems to be the company line from Citieh, but what do you expect with a manager like Hughes, god does that bloke have any humility! there's nothing wrong with a bit confidence but when you've won absolutely f#ck all as a manager a bit of modesty might not go a miss! instead of that he runs around telling any one who will listen that there going to conquer the world, how about conquering the Carling cup first or maybe the intertoto? oh & before any Citieh fans say it, yes I do remember Mourinho & it was a little annoying but at least he'd won something first!
regg13
reeled them in, hook line and sinker - aren't I a cad :-)
merlin
THanks for this article merlin. I wonder if Petrov himself believes the crap he said. I bet this is how those Sheikhs try to convince big players to join them. A very pathetic approach if you ask me.
chelsey
since the prem started i'd hazard a guess and say citeh have finished in the top ten 4 times, except in 86 when we beat them in the full members cup i personally cant remember them being in a cup final or winning feck all, yet this guy reckons they are on the same level as us prior to Mr A,
ten men
lol at petrov! what a joke.
MrDax
Petrov's biggest mistake is that City, with all that money invested last season, didn't even make the UEFA Cup. It's a dumb remark, regardless of what club you support.
RadioactiveD
How the hell is he meant to know about the situations of our club pre-Abramovic. Basically, he's just showing off your typical footballers intellect. He, like many, have just got a bit carried away. Give it another season at least and I think City will be very close to the level that we've been at. That does depend on managerial circumstances though.
timcfc
I disagree, timcfc. Our level is so high that third place in the league, an FA Cup trophy, and a CL semi knockout was in all a disappointing year. Man City aren't there yet, not by a longshot.
RadioactiveD
Petrov, you muppet. You dont even know if you'll be in that club for next season. So kindly research and select your next club before being stupid.
JT_daniel
I think Petrov (and a lot of Citeh fans) have been so mesmerized by the Arab cash that they're thinking too highly of themselves.By the way, good one merlin.I see Ched78 came in all pumped up spouting ******.What fun!
JT is God
I'm going to leave talk of history to the Scousers... What matters is the present.
The_Legend_Of_Zola
too right no comparison city fans
starginga
Give it a few days and Petrov will turn down a contract offer from Citeh and be linked to us. Then Cech and Lamps will be rumoured as signing for them for £200mil each...
LifeLongBlue
Hey, at least its exciting being a Citeh fan in the transfer window, rest of the season must suck though...
LifeLongBlue
I actually like Petrov very much. before Ireland came through he was their only genuinely quality player. Miles better than Robinho. If Petrov was fit last season they'd have done very differently. He's just wrong in his comments.
