Atletico Madrid 2 Chelsea 2

Chelsea qualified for the knockout stages courtesy of a 2-2 draw in the Calderon and Porto scoring a late winner in Cyprus.

Team News - Carlo Ancelotti caused few surprises with his line up picking a solid eleven that looked good on paper. Alex, Joe Cole and Drogba came in for their first Champions League starts and Kalou was rewarded for his Champions League antics so far this season with a place alongside Drogba at the head of the attack. Also making a welcome return from injury was Ashley Cole.

Madrid sprang two surprises though with the reported Chelsea target, Sergio 'Kun` Aguero and the influential Maxi on the bench. Aficionados of the Premier League might remember Reyes (Arsenal) and Pongolle (Liverpool), both were to start for Atletico.

First Half -The first half was a cagey affair. Atletico knew they had to win to keep their hopes of qualification alive whilst Chelsea were aware a draw would more or less see them through.

Clear cut chances were at a minimum and both goalkeepers had very little to do in the way of keeping busy. On reflection Atletico had the better of the efforts on target when Cech was forced to tip away a curling, twenty-yard, shot from Reyes after twenty-one minutes.

Apart from that Atletico were content to unleash long range efforts with Forlan firing wide in the fifth minute repeating the effort on the half hour mark. As for Chelsea, a swift counter attack, close to half time, saw Lampard unleash a shot, from distance, that couldn`t have missed by much.

Earlier on some bulldozing work from Essien had seen Drogba swivel and shoot wide and close to eh half hour mark a neat back-heel from Joe Cole allowed Ashley Cole to provide a cross that Kalou headed narrowly wide.

Second Half - If the first was cagey the second half was to surprise us all with four goals. The first of which came from the much sought after Aguero. On as a substitute he lashed home a volley, with sixty-five minutes gone, after a cross into the box had been flicked on by John Terry.

Chelsea looked to be staring down the barrel of a defeat but Drogba rose to the challenge and in the 82nd minute he rose superbly to head home a Malouda cross.

Six minutes later, Chelsea thought they had the victory when Drogba, at the second attempt, finished off a swift counter attack prompted by a great ball from Ashley Cole.

However, fate had another twist for us all. In stoppage time Ashley Cole was penalized for a challenge and Aguero lashed home the perfect free kick. With Porto getting a late goal in Cyprus Chelsea had qualified..

Chelsea - Cech, Belletti, Terry, Alex, A.Cole, Essien (Ballack-59), Lampard, J.Cole (Deco-70), Malouda, Drogba, Kalou (Anelka-70)

Unused Subs - Hilario, Ivanovic, Carvalho, Sturridge,

Chelsea Scorers - Drogba (2)

Chelsea Yellow Cards - Essien, Terry

Chelsea Red Cards - Nil

25 goals in 50 CL appearances - superb!
merlin
God damn, I left after we equalised to get to to work, had my phone on with text commentary. Kept refreshing, saw we went 2-1 in front and was celebrating like crazy in my car and then refreshed again and saw bloody Aguero equalised! Disappointed but in the end the result means nothing.
johnnywarren
We are rubbish on the continent....... Joe Cole has gone back to being awful..... Ash isn't match fit, maybe Paulo should play on Sunday.....Last 2 games the opposing manager has played a diamond and gone man for man, and we haven't looked comfortable....
Saf 91
Biggest positive was ManUre are looking awful.
Saf 91
I wouldn't be too worried. You could see they were conserving their energy all game for Sunday and didn't want to risk any injuries.
johnnywarren
DD's second goal was pure class. Now that Aguero kid, he looked pretty good too...
RadioactiveD
Joe Cole has gone back to being awful, i agree 100%
Bluedream
Joe Cole is always pretty average against the better teams. His biggest problem has always been inconsistency.
johnnywarren
AGUERO TO CHELSEA! Get the kid now!!
djdutts
What do you guys think of Cech? I ***** myself everytime an aerial ball comes in. He always seems to make the WRONG decision. He's fallen far away from the keeper he used to be.
johnnywarren
Cech no longer has 4 CBs and Makalele in front of him. He is still a great keeper.
londonfc
J Cole was doing a bit of the old headless chicken act. But Kalou was the main problem. There was no cohesion moving forward and he was making some very odd decisions. I thought Deco had a positive influence when he came on. He made a little run, took on a coulple of players and it really shook up their midfield. The goal came soon after.
londonfc
I'm getting close to declaring Drogba the best Chelsea player of all time.
londonfc
It's not Kalou's fault that there was no cohesion, Joe Cole decided not to play at the tip of the diamond today, if you look at the average positions, he was almost shoulder to shoulder with Malouda. Complain for 6 years that no one plays you in the centre and then drift wide when they do, lovely.
Saf 91
I still think Cech is the best there is.
Saf 91
Joe cole was horrible! i think Essien-Ballack substitution was to rest them. Ashley cole did not play good as well. but i think ancelotti was satisfied with the draw! chelsea might have won the game if the 2nd half was essien malouda ballack lampard in the middle! and again beletti is playing very well
Moussa
"I'm getting close to declaring Drogba the best Chelsea player of all time." londonfc londonfc - have you gone mad? How can Drogba be classed as better than Zola, Osgood or Tambling? Kerry Dixon was also better than Drogba. Nice comment mate, but you can't out him in the same bracket as Zola or Osgood. Not yet.
djdutts
out = put
djdutts
And what about Lamps?!? Drogba is a great player, but he is no way close to our best player ever!
djdutts
Drogba shines in one of the most star-studded teams in the world..... a diamond among pearls....... I reckon he is going to surpass Zola before the end of his career. Although I reckon Frank is going to surpass everyone.
Saf 91
It doesn't make much sense to enter into such conversation. How can we measure his career while it's still happening and then compare it to greats like Zola and Osgood? Plus, not even six months ago half the people here were ready to kick him to the curb! Either he's the best Chelsea player ever or he isn't worthy to wear the uniform...blah blah blah...you know, there's such thing as a middle ground.
RadioactiveD
A lack of urgency and penetration, rather than application from the lads this evening. I'd be interested in having a look at the stats because I can't remember too many shots/on target at all, apart from Drogba's two goals and earlier free kick. We never really broke out of third gear, and that suggests to me that eyes were on United at the weekend. Thankfully, our complacency and lack of concentration didn't cost us tonight though. We're qualified now, still work to do to claim top spot, but a deserved point on the road nonetheless.
daspecial1
saf 91 - You do know that our defense consisted of Neville, Brown, Evans and Fabio right? And our attack was Owen and Macheda for almost an hour. Even Nani started. It'd be crazy for you to judge us on this game! Trust me, the team on sunday will be CONSIDERABLY different.
ForeverUnited
I get the impression J.Cole needs a bit of that Mourinho-esque hard-line approach that's served him so well before. The flicks and tricks are so unneccessary at times, and infuriating when they cause us to lose possession. If Ancelotti's serious about integrating him into that role at the tip of the diamond, he's still got a lot of work to do with Joe, in my opinion. I'd play Deco there against United.
daspecial1
FU - Our second string defence would read: Belletti, Ivanovic, Alex, Ferriera. Speaks volumes about the differences in our squads this year, don't you think?
daspecial1
Never saw Zola, Dixon or Osgood play. They will always be considered finer Chelsea players than Drogba, as will Terry, Lampard, perhaps even Joe Cole. Zola apparently approached world class. Have never heard the same regarding Dixon. Drogba is the finest striker there is - that should be enough.
Drogstark
I think we are finally going to take home the CL Trophy this year. There - I said it.
Drogstark
Now who wants Aguero at the Bridge?
JT_daniel
JT_Daniel: I would - but that would mean sidelining nico - and I don't see that happening after this weekend, nico is on the form of his life.
BlueFanSA
Oh yeah, that's true.. But mate, Drogs is 31, Nico's 30 and they are'nt exactly getting younger, right?
JT_daniel
I want Aguero at the Bridge, give them Kalou and some cash( like around 45 million), have Aguero as third choice striker, rotate between Nico and Drogs.
Seabourch
We've got a difficult trip to Porto and APOEL home left. FC Porto also have it tough, with a home game against us and an away game to Athletico. I fancy that we'll get a draw at Porto and a win against APOEL, which will see us through as the group leaders, which will be further strengthened if Porto lose to Athletico or even draw against them.
JT_daniel
45 million and 3rd choice?! For 45 million, I'd expect him to atleast start every game, Seabourch..
JT_daniel
Not Aguero, atleast not for 45m.Imagine the clamor if he fails to score in a few games!!It'll be Sheva all over again :|
blueKnightz09
its what ive always being saying kalou and joe have a problem with something we called consistency they can work pretty well against weak sides such as blacburn and bolton but against any good defence ....no.....abt aguero he is what we call players who can change the game on their own..aguero and drogba or di santo up front think abt it
haji ahmed
My prediction for this game was spot on - scoring draw.
indian_blue
Yes, you were right. And similarly I and others who have made Aguero our top 'must have' for the last 2 years also feel vindicated tis morning. However I am utterly peed off this morning, as I got a phone call from a good friend 15 minutes into the match to ask if I could come and help him as his car had broken down in town with his two kids. Aghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
mutters
Must admit I had this game down as a draw, so was pretty pleased with it in the end. A bit concerned about how rusty Ashley Cole looked. I've also been in the 'Get Aguero' group so hope we will make this lad one of us. I think he's just shown the powers that be his true worth following an unconvincing performance at the Bridge two weeks ago.
timcfc
i was singing 'buy aguero' all summer.he's a terrific player but he is short which in chelsea is a great deficiency..that said i still prefer pato..back to matchday issues; it baffles me how a great many of us were moaning thaat joe cole should have seen action instead of deco at the weekend, now we are all over him calling him everything but a drogba-esque 'fncking disgrace'.cool it fellas, he just had a bad day..
blueogre
we need to get him in jan if the ban is lifted he will help us to win the league we can always sell kalou..u are right abt a.cole he was a bit rusty ....
haji ahmed
I find it bizarre that everyone just expects us to be able to buy in January. The Court of Arbitration made it clear that they'd hear this case before January and that a decision would be handed down in December if I remember correctly. There's not even a guarantee that the ban will be temporarily lifted until the appeal is decided. I hope it is, because you'll see us go crazy, I have no doubt about that, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
johnnywarren
Agreed blueogre - relax a little guys. Joey has just come back from a lengthy lay off. He's easing himself in nicely, had a great game against Blackburn the other week and looked a little rusty last night, he's not going to be up to his high standards straight away. The same applies to the criticism of Ash. He's just missed the past couple of games with a knock picked up in the home game with A. Madrid. He played OK last night, but to be fair, apart from the Drog, no one stood out. He's been the best left back in the league so far this season - chill out a tad!!
Makelegend
Cole has been out for ages.. he has played 3 games wich 2 he was fantastic in.. give the guy a break! DD is pure class.. we will finish one top.. no worries.. Porto won't beat us! I want Aguero in Chelsea but i'm afraid Man u gets him..
rune3k
Jw, it will be cancelled. You wait and watch.
JT_daniel
What I'm afraid is that this will become into another Torres situation. If United or Citeh get him, he'll become a deadly striker and then we'll all moan about why we never got him.
JT_daniel
Man U won't go for Aguero. I think the other half of Manchester might well come in for him though. Joe Cole wasn't great last night, but, do we really need to be slagging him off so harshly! He'll come good again I'm sure, as will the other Cole who I'm sure will be back to his best on Sunday. The whole game was a bit of a strange one and didn't really get going until the second half. I'm sure that won't be that case come Sunday at the Bridge
timcfc
It isn't good that Aguero scored twice against us. Forget the result for a minute. What we were already facing in terms of cost for the player has just shot up even more. Aguero may be a big talent, but whatever the cost is, we shouldn't pay it. No effing way can you rationalize paying 40 or 50m for a single player. It's madness, and he'll never be able to satisfy our expectations with that kind of transfer sum.
RadioactiveD
From what I have seen of Aguero, I prefer Anelka. He took the first goal well but Terry gifted the ball to him on a silver platter. The free kick was nice but Cech was WAY out of position and took a half hearted lunge at the ball - pulled up when he thought he might hit the post. 45M? No thank you.
Drogstark
Is it just me or does anyone think that 3 years ago Petr Cech may have saved BOTH goals from last night?? Don't get me wrong, the 1st was a great strike - but I remember him making saves like that time and time again - one that springs to mind is Robbie Keane against Sp*rs @ home in JM's first season. And the free-kick seemed like he was unsure where his post was and perhaps didn't stretch as much as chould have done.. I've been saying it since the game against poo that perhaps Hilario deserves a run in the side for a few games - to show we have competition for places. I know that Cech's indifferent form may be based on a lack of confidence, but it may give him the kick up the backside he requires. At the moment it seems like teams no longer fear facing Cech - and if we got that back I think it may even help our defensive frailties that have been far too prevalent over the last 12/14 months.
nar86
Aguero's a quality talent, but can anyone really justify splashing out £40m on a single player? One whom, acknowledging his quality, has no experience of life or football in England. I've still got what might be diagnosed as Sheva-itus - I'm too scared that we'll throw another small fortune down the toilet.
daspecial1
nar86 - The same Petr Cech that hasn't conceded a goal at the Bridge since August 15th?
daspecial1
Drogba is liek no other player I've seen. When he drops back into midfield his passes, tackles and feeding of another forward is as good as any of our midfielders. Last night I'm sure he cleared more crosses than Terry when he was back in defence. His first touch under pressure and some of the quick flicks he does are also amazing. I was so p1ssed off with him after the CL to the point I thought it was time for him to leave, but looking at it, for me he is up there with the absolute best in the world. Lampard is a legend, but is he actually better than Iniesta or Xavi as a midfielder? I see no forward better than Drogba.
londonfc
Aguero has real talent. But will he fit in at Chelsea? Playing well for another team does not mean playing well for Chelsea.
londonfc
Aguero can easily succeed in Chelsea( pace and technic are there). His only problem is that he is small and more a creater than a goal scorer.30mio would be fine for him, 40 or 50 are way too much.As for Drogba, Merlin, we have got a superstar in our team, some one write an article about him. That last goal against Blackburn in EPL and yesterdays`s solo were awsome xD Btw, in MOTM poll I voted for Malouda, poor guy doesnt get enough votes even though he assisted goals. That curled pass to Drogba around midfielders was top notch.
german blues brother
45m for Aguero is not worth it.I am sure Carlo has other ideas.
blueKnightz09
Aguero,no,that b*stard bought 2 cheap free kicks off us.(Ok,I'm a bit *****ed,still) Like many said,no one, certainly not from the CAS has given us the impression we can buy in january. With all these price tags and speculation for villa/aguero etc. they certainly wouldnt want us active in the market.Lets stick to grooming studge/di santo/borini.No inflated price tags to rip us off, lets talk once the ban is suspended. No better forward than drogba indeed. Most are orthodox strikers but not him...feed the Drog!
Chelsea24/7
Not even 30 is worth it
zg2000fs
...a speculative price though....just as is the 90million Euros we would be asked for the Benfica trio.....and one of them even had a trial with us under Mourinho!!
mutters
daspecial1 - yeah the same one!! he hasn't had to make too many saves in that time period to be fair. i'm not saying that i think he shouldn't be our #1 or should sell him - but i don't think anybody can see he is the same player he was..?? and i don't think that's anything to do with ability. no doubting who's the better of the GKs, but i think if you look @ hilario's recent performances (and throughout his entire chelsea career) i think he well deserves at least a small run - and i don't think it would be anything other than healthy for cech. at the end of the day - it's not gonna happen (!!!) i just want to see the cech of old.
nar86
We played carelessly, Kalou and JCole quite clueless on how to compliment possession football. Also Contrary to PL, CL referees are whistle happy (not used to Prem L games), we gave away far too many free-kicks for our players' aggression and we paid for it with a win. The point is, our players should learn quickly and exercise guile over brawn after we were penalized for the slightest contact. Especially when they were trying to win free kicks by falling too easily, JT n A cole were really peeved by that 45-50m Aguero poofter.
makkumwai
So who should play tip of the diamond against Manure this weekend?
londonfc
I would play Ballack there, and Deco behind him. He can do some heavy damage on physical teams like Manure.I dont like the idea of Drogba being isolated upfront.
german blues brother
By the way, how about Higuain? I think he would suit us just as well as Aguero+much cheaper.
german blues brother
Joey undoubtedly. He is tosh playing in the wings i said that before the game. He's much much better at the tip.
JT_daniel

Real wont sell him. He's too important to them. When all their strikers get injured traditionally during christmas, who'll get them to the second place?

Sorry for spamming. Opera mini is one fecked up browser.
JT_daniel
I wouldn't be too surprised to see us back in for Pato. No doubting that there is a lot of mutual appreciation between him and Ancelotti.
Makelegend
Deco to play at the tip on Sunday, Lampard, Ballack and Essien behind him making up the midfield. Anelka and Drogs up front, back four of A.Cole, JT, Carvalho and Ivanovic. We can't go wrong!
daspecial1
nar86 - Agreed, he might not be the same Petr Cech as the one who performed so admirably and consistently at the start of his career here, but would you be the same player after fracturing your skull? There remains no other goalkeeper I'd rather see between the sticks than Big Pete.
daspecial1
Barcelona are one fecked up team. Loads of mindless interpassing. They fall down like a flash. What a fecked up team.
JT_daniel
Guardiola is stupid or the whole Barca tea. They have got a very strong and tall striker with superb technic and try to pass the ball to him through 10 defenders. First smart move was made by Henry, he played a high ball to Ibrahimovic and it caused danger.I hope, they will be in Europa league:D
german blues brother
How great will be it to see Barca and Pool knocked out in group stage. Will not happen, but i can dream, cant i? :D
