Sheva Nets Vs Mourinho As Birmingham Take Interest

The relationship between our former manager Jose Mourinho and the most expensive signing in our history, Andriy Shevchenko, remained a mysterious one during their time at Stamford Bridge. Rumours constantly abounded that Shevchenko, bought for £30m, was a signing orchestrated from the top of the club, over Mourinho`s head. Roman Abramovich, the club owner, had a strong personal friendship with the Ukrainian striker, and this gave further weight to the suggestions that Shevchenko was never really a Mourinho signing.

The pair struggled to see eye-to-eye throughout the 2006-07 campaign, Shevchenko`s first in SW6, and it has gone down in club folklore that their relationship was, at best, fraught, and at worst, non-existent.

So it was rather amusing to see the former Milan hitman strike the opener for his new club side Dynamo Kiev last night, against Mourinho`s Inter Milan, a goal that prompted Mourinho to remark,

"Shevchenko is very much back. Here again is the player we could see three or four years ago. He again became a great football player."

Which begs the question; why couldn`t Mourinho bring out that greatness in the striker at Chelsea? Was it perhaps a case of wouldn`t rather than couldn`t help Sheva justify his massive price tag and become a hit in West London?

All questions which, by and large, will remain unanswered, at least to those of us without some kind of inside knowledge of their respective spells at the club. Shevchenko goes down on paper as a massive failure in English football, and that`s hardly going to change in the future.

Unless new Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung has anything to do with it. The Brummies are apparently keen on giving Shevchenko a second chance in the Premier League, viewing his household name and global status as a real asset to their marketing plans. The new investment into City leaves them largely capable of tempting Kiev with a bid, although Dynamo president Igor Surkis is confident the forward will be true to his word, and remain in Ukraine until he hangs up his boots.

'I haven't received an offer, but, for me, it's pleasant that Andriy is in demand," said Surkis.

"Shevchenko is reborn, becoming as he was before leaving for Milan (in 1999). His eye for goal and speed will return."

'As for offers? It doesn't just depend on me, but also on Andriy. In the summer he made a patriotic decision, rejecting offers from Italy, Spain and Turkey. I don't think he wants anything to change.'

So, a return to Britain may well be a bit of a long shot, although a revisit with Dynamo could be slightly more likely.

Shevchenko`s goal last night wasn`t enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat to Inter, although Kiev remain just two points adrift of the Italian group leaders with two games to play, in what is arguably the toughest and tightest of the Champions League groups.

jose did put him on the bench a lot, that was never going to get the best out of him was it?

I am a huge fan of Sheva's. I wanted him to succeed at Stamford like no one else. But It wasn't just Mourinho's sh_tty attitude toward the guy. Sheva did come to Chelsea recovering from injuries so he wasn't physically himself for quite a while and Mourinho showed very little patience, as did a lot of Chelsea fans...everyone wanted him to start earning that huge salary right off the bat. Sheva wasn't played enough to get into or stay in form, lost confidence....the rest is history. Concerning Mourinho's attitude...I remember very distinctly just one reporters' interview with Jose where they asked why Sheva was not on the bench (the player was actually injured) and Jose, with a sweeping golf stroke, responded that he was probably on the golf course...wry smile on his face. Nice, nice f_eking nice attitude from your own manager!

Sheva Mourinho Roman. ....and Sheva was the gooseberry. Thus it never really could work. Gooseberry he may have been, but barmy as a blackcurrent he aint...so he wont be in Brum!
mutters
anyone else reckoned Jose smiled, wryly, when Sheva netted though?
Merlin
Yes, merlin, I'm sure he did. "Shevchenko is very much back. Here again is the player we could see three or four years ago. He again became a great football player." ( Mourinho) What!!!??? Jose actually thought he was a great player at one time!?!?!? Wow! Would have fooled me!
Squig
was an amazing strike even if cesar was caught a little out, great control on the chest and hit with the left while two defenders legs are creeping in. was wonderful to see, wish it was the winner.
ballack13
I could'nt see his face, merlin, as he was kicking the back of the dugout at the time!

Anybody watch the game? Sheva essentially playied as a winger/attacking midfielder for DKiev. Half the crowd sported surgical masks - swine flu is running rampant in the Ukraine. Inter look terrible, although I wouldn't mind us having picked up Schneider.
Drogstark
Stay in Ukraine Sheva, you are loved there. And as a winger he seems to be doing well.
Seabourch
How gullible can you get. No way does Mourinho think what he said. He was using it as an excuse to explain Inter's bad form, as if they were up against some superstar, when the truth is they were rubbish and JM was covering it up. Some people in Italy want Sheva to be back in his old form, even though they had a full season to see how useless he's become. He hardly played and scored even less. Now he's back to his old form? Then how come Kiev are so willing to see him gone? Pull the other one.
Squiddy
I was in tears when I saw that goal, I was laughing so loud! Great stuff! Go Sheva!! LOL
blues first
Thinking out loud here, but I am quite sure we could get him back in the transfer window now that the band has been suspended. Need cover for the ACON and all. Anybody? Apparently he has a left foot now!
Drogstark
It's vital for any athlete to know when his time is up. Shevchenko is getting close to retirement and he'd be a fool to leave a squad doing pretty well in the CL for a club like Birmingham. As for his "return to form," it won't ever happen. The old Shevchenko is long gone.
