'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Please Remember the Fallen!

With the ongoing situation in Afghanistan splashed across the news pages on a regular basis and the tragic news of servicemen being killed being reported, tomorrow, Remembrance Sunday, has an even more poignant feel to it.

Now this article isn`t intended to spark a debate about the rights and wrongs of the situation in Afghanistan, but, instead, to report on how Chelsea Football Club are doing their bit to support those who are serving their country and doing the best to address the situation that politicians have landed them in.

Now, we`ve already heard from our colleagues over at cfcuk that the Pride of London flag will not be surfacing tomorrow as it was felt it may well detract from the solemn nature of the minutes silence that will be held.

Now we`d like to spread the word about what the club will be doing as it deserves as wide a coverage as possible.

Tomorrow, against Manchester United, 200 tickets have been provided for members of our armed forces, the club will also be wearing specially commissioned shirts that have poppies embroidered on them and both United and Chelsea will form a guard of honour for the soldiers and the Chelsea Pensioners in attendance.

Up in the directors box, as special guest of honour, will be 8 year old Conor Lockett whose dad, Mike, was awarded the Military Cross for saving the lives of four comrades before he died in battle.

After the game, the aforementioned especially commissioned shirts; will be auctioned to raise funds for the British Legion.

It all promises to be a sombre affair before the match gets underway and we`d ask all those attending to do their bit and to salute those who have perished, over the years, in the line of duty. Brave folks, doing a brave job and folks who have my utmost respect, so please lets do them proud and make it an occasion and a minutes silence to remember.

Good to see the club getting behind the campaign, always a somber time of year if you've got family in the services .

Chelsea FC is doing the right thing, and I am confident that all of the fans will salute the fallen. (Btw, is it true that our visitors tomorrow choose not to don a poppy?) On a side note, for all those not attending the game for various reasons, if you can please try to attend a local Remembrance Day ceremony, or at least, wear a poppy. I am currently wearing a poppy, and will attend the annual Service of Remembrance, which is to be held at my school next Wednesday. The acheivements and sacrifices made by the soldiers should always be remembered.

Proudly wearing mine.

i see the mancs and cesspool have no poppies on their shirts!! what a fecking disgrace they are!! i bet the fact that 200 tickets to our boys and the lad up at the directors box wont get a mention by the media etc. no lets keep chelsea as the club without a soul and the axis of evil lads!!!!

It'd be hard to see the poppies on red shirts anyway, though I suppose they could have worn away shirts.

I believe young Conor Locket's heroic dad, Mike, was a big Chelsea supporter as well. It's great that the club are going the extra mile to salute our brave boys and girls, and to remember all those that have fallen over the years gone by. It's exactly this kind of attitude that will ensure that they, and their sacrifices for us, are never forgotten.

This is great stuff! As a military retiree, I think its wonderful that CFC and other clubs are paying tribute to the armed forces. God Bless the Free World!!!!

I slagged the Mancs off on their forum last Thursday when I heard they'd refused to wear a poppy....and coming to the home of the Chelsea Pensioners too. Feckin disgrace. My Dad's at the Cenotaph Parade this morning laying a wreath on behalf of the Italy Star Association ( the 'D-Day dodgers' that fought at Monte Cassino.) I'm going up with him and then I'll wonder over to the match.

Actually, I'm off to pick him up now...so ciao everyone...and let's give them a thrashing this afternoon. CAREFREE!
mutters
Yes.

And spare a thought for that poor innocent common man of Afghanistan also, whose begum is in labour but hasn't eaten anything since the day before yesterday, for his young daughter of 10 who hadn't had a proper robe to cover herself since she left her cradle, or a fuller meal to satiate her pubescent hunger, for his son who looks on in anticipation towards his father with a long lorn hope that one day Abba will bring him the treasures of sugar, spice, a glistening silken turban and all the goodness of which he once used to tell tales when he was a mere child..

They look on with hope in their heart, and raise their palms towards the endless blue heavens above in gesture of seeking solace form all the mortal sufeerings bequeathed upon them by baseless tyranny and morbid fascism. Spare a thought for the Afghan man...
Tambling
it's always a solemn occasion and my thoughts are with all those who perished, whatever nationailty - the folly of war!
merlin
spot on, today is to remember the fallen regardless of peoples opinions of the war
ten men
Great gesture from the club. I hate war.
JT_daniel
A great effort made by the club. The banners on the MH and Shed summed it all up nicely, and the spontaneous rendition of 'Rule Britannia' was very fitting indeed.
