Chelsea - Naming Rights Vote?

The possibility of Chelsea negotiating a deal for the naming rights, of Stamford Bridge, continues to be a highly debatable subject.

Over in the office where my normal work duties are carried out, I`ve been subjected to the usual mirth from the Spurs contingent, a contingent who have been totally oblivious to the fact that since their club published plans for their new stadium, two stands (in the published pictures) had naming rights scrawled across them.

Interestingly, the tabloids today carry an interesting discussion about the situation. Opinion remains divided with some pundits suggesting naming rights should only be up for offer on a new stadium.

One enterprising, but highly comical, Spurs supporter venting his opinion implied that his side, with their proposed new stadium, were far likelier to attract a big deal than us, especially with our old stadium. Seemingly, this less than bright spark was keen to ignore the fact that a successful club, like us, is far more likely to have big businesses interested in being associated with them.

But what do you, the Vital Chelsea readership, think?

As soon as the news broke, daspecial1 posted a poll asking for you to vote for either of two options. He wanted to know whether you thought it was an economically sound idea or was it an insult to the club?

Interestingly, opinion was almost perfectly split with 52% recognising that it was a sound idea whilst 48% believing it to be an insult to the club.

Apparently, the debate is set to rage on and on………!

I like "stamford bridge" its all us. I dont want some commercial,non-stamford,gutless name. Unless we get a bigger stadium.

Can't stand the idea, but it's preferable to leaving the bridge all together. That would be the ultimate transition away from our real roots, i couldn't cope!

We have the same situation with our local rugby stadium here in Christchurch. It has gone through several name changes in the past few years due to naming rights, but we still all just call it Lancaster Park, so honestly it doesn't really bother me as long as we don't forget it's actual name.

I think I've hit the nail on the head as to some of our real hostility towards this, or at least my hostility towards it. I'm still a small-club supporter, with a small-club mentality. I can't comprehend some big conglomerate company scrawling their name in horrificly large letters all over the Bridge. I can't comprehend us selling off the very history that everyone says we don't have. But, deep, deep down, I know it kind of probably makes sense. And is, like OS mentions, much more preferable than us moving.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet! Doesn't bother me at all what the "official" name is, it'll always be The Bridge to me!

It makes sense, business wise. Not sure if I'd like it to be called anything other than the Bridge, though.

I have absolutely no problem with this at all. It makes absolutely no difference to anything, apart from the fact that the club gets several million a year that they won't be asking for from me, which can only be good. The club is the same, the team is the same, the stadium is the same. It doesn't affect any history, nor any future. The old West Stand was rebuilt in the 60s, the East stand in the 70s, the rest of the stadium in the 90s. This really did change the whole stadium and no-one said a dicky bird. People should be careful what they wish for, else they'll be asking for the old crumbling concrete of the Shed and North stand, rickety west stand and shambles of an east stand back. Rename it tomorrow and I'll be happy about it.

Agree completely with DS1, but at the end of the day, it will always be The Bridge and if the money gets spent on the playing staff, bring it on.
