Chelsea - More Apologies For Mr Abramovich?

You wonder how they get away with printing this stuff sometimes, don't you?

This time last week, splashed all across the Sunday tabloids, was the story that our wealthy owner, Roman Abramovich, had spent rather a lot of money on a restaurant meal out.

The reports claimed, in fact, that the Russian had spent over £30k wining and dining his son, girlfriend and a couple of friends, in a nice Italian in New York.

It was promptly branded a disgrace, that someone could spend so much money on an evening's meal, rubbing his vast wealth in the noses of the unemployed and homeless during a time of real recession.

Here at Vital Chelsea, we made our own little side-comment about the story, basically asking 'who cares?'

Abramovich - Who Cares?

However, this morning, one of those very same rags that ran so prominently with the 'sensational' story last week, has issued another grovelling apology.

The Mirror, a notoriously anti-Chelsea rag, has claimed that the £30k meal was actually made up, and Abramovich only spent £1,000 in the restauarant that night. They are, of course, happy to make this clear, particularly now that they've sold x amount more papers because of the story.

Which begs the question, how do the rags keep getting away with blatantly lying and making stuff up?

A couple of months ago, they lied about Salomon Kalou's birthday party, saying he spent thousands of pounds on booze when he didn't even spend a penny.

Last week, Michael Essien successfully sued another newspaper for lying about him having an affair.

Several months ago, Abramovich sued another rag for claiming he was selling up at Chelsea because he was bored.

All, clearly, blatant lies, and lies that these journalists know full well they are telling when they send a story to print.

And people like Abramovich are just forced to sit back and take the flak, knowing that it'll be months before the newspaper accepts they got it wrong, by which point the mud has already stuck, and nobody really cares. That's if they can read the tiny little apology printed in the corner of Page 47.

Apologies for the Sunday morning rant, but the moral of this piece is to simply ask a question; is anyone actually going to do something about these rags printing whatever rubbish they want? Or are we all going to be subjected to their ridiculous, fictional bile forevermore?

I see they are assuming we are all short sighted and therefore unable to read such tiny print.

Envy is rarely pretty, and I bet you that is the predominant underlying reason here. Who cares what they write anyway? CAREFREE!!!
Blue is the colour
Do the right thing and don't buy these papers. CAREFREE

The rags have a habit of blurting out tosh when it comes to Roman, the majority of it is hardly newsworthy.
Osgood_Spirit
Just as its always fashionable to bash immigrants,it seems writing ridiculous articles about Chelsea is also fasionable in the media world
CHELSEAGEE
Ridiculous, these rags. What bile they spurt out.

I don't really agree with sueing, but I have to say, these papers deserve it. I could understand if it was Ecclestone, the story would be believable, but unlike Mr Ecclestone our owner is quiet to the point of secretive. I can see now why he has a laser shut out on his little yacth!
aslaram
So if this was someone else's bill, are they 30 times richer than Roman or was it the excessive spend of a (merchant) banker? Or was it someone newspaper proprietor? I think we should be told. How much will the papers pay for defamation of character? I'd like to know.
Squiddy
Not very much, I'm afraid Squid. The best way out of this would be Mr.A buying a newspaper and make it as Pro Chelsea as possible.
