FC Porto 0 Chelsea 1

Chelsea beat FC Porto on their home patch in the first time in three attempts to claim victory in Group D. But, despite the victory, it wasn`t the greatest of matches.

Team News - A Carlo Ancelotti had implied during the pre-match interview there were several changes to the line-up with the match against Arsenal, on Sunday, very much on his mind.

Michael Essien, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole were all on the bench although perhaps one major surprise was to see the name of Didier Drogba on the team sheet. It had been expected that our leading scorer this season wouldn`t start in this game as he recovers from the rib injury sustained against Manchester United.

With Ashley Col eon the bench we were to witness the first start, in competitive action, of Yuri Zhirkov. However, those expecting our teenage sensation Gael Kakauta to at least be on the bench were disappointed as Ancelotti went with experience.

First Half - Chelsea got the action underway in the 'Dragons Den` but with both teams having qualified it has to be said the action lacked that cutting edge normally associated with the Champions League.

On reflection though it`ll be Porto who would consider they had the better chances with Belluschi twice testing Petr Cech. The first, a long range effort, saw Cech forced to push the ball away and the keeper then did well to block two efforts from rebounds. The second saw Cech beaten but the ball crashed against the cross bar from twenty yards out.

Chelsea looked to be content to keep the score at 0-0 and created very few clear cut chances. Early on both Anelka and Malouda dragged shots wide from distance and Beto, in the Porto goal, was forced to push away a swerving shot from Anleka from twenty-two yards out.

Chelsea forced three corners but with Deco delivering the ball the home defence coped okay. The first of the three drifted wide, the second saw Drogba head well wide and the third saw the keeper claim a clean catch.

Second Half - Porto got the second half underway and it was played at a slightly higher tempo. Fernandes received a yellow card for a foul on Drogba before Deco fired inches wide after an injection of pace from Anelka.

Chelsea were pushing forward but some dangerous looking balls, fizzed into the box, by Malouda and Zhirkov were not being met by Chelsea forwards. Porto introduced Hulk and he tested Cech with a shot from a very acute angle before volleying over from outside the box.

However, with sixty nine minutes gone and with Essien on for Ballack, Chelsea were to get that vital goal. Some good work saw the ball fed to Malouda and when his cross was delivered it was left to Anelka to score his sixth goal of the season.

Porto tried to get back on level terms but Cech saved well from Farias and Hulk and the three pints that confirmed us as group winners were ours.

Chelsea - Cech, Ivanovic Terry, Carvalho, Zhirkov, Mikel, Ballack (Essien-76), Malouda, Deco (J.Cole-76), Anelka, Drogba

Unused Subs - Turnbull, A.Cole, Kalou, Alex, Belletti,

Chelsea Scorers - Anelka

Chelsea Yellow Cards - Ballack

Chelsea Red Cards - Nil

Malouda hasn't put a foot wrong whenever he's played this season, was excellent again today, and has been for 9 months. Neither Deco nor Joe Cole offer anything, how is it fair that Malouda has had to settle for the bench for most of the season?
Saf 91
I thought Deco was dreadul!
merlin
Malouda has been class. But Zhirkov looked brilliant, potential.potential. Anelka as always this season, magic
ben_Crisp
Malouda i'm sure will play more often after his consistent performances.
ZeeNut
I agree that Zirkhov was excellent. Pity the other players had tuned off to that option once A.Cole was rested.
ZeeNut
Malouda. Anelka. Cech. Top 3 performers for today. Good to see the team win even when playing in a low gear. Hopefully Ancelotti will play some of the kids against Nicosia.
essienic
O btw. Bane (probably Yuri as well) got a haircut. Doesn't look that good though.
Nika
I loved the game. i think we played well. Anelka? unbelievable! cech- the world's best. deco -awful, mikel-indifferent, zhirkov-decent debut, malouda- 'A' game.
blueogre
Why dont we try Malouda at the tip of the diamond, I think he could do very well there.
german blues brother
Frank is going to be on the left for sure. Joe at the tip pretty much. But Frank can't play that many matches... so Florent, or possibly Yuri can play on the left in some games. Just like Bane/Bossman... Bane is very good but he sometimes has to sit on the bench.
Nika
i think ancelotti is our best summer signing by miles. whichever goup of 11 players he puts out seem to do a decent job. i'm surprised some think we didnt play well- we won porto in portugal? great result.
blueogre
nika who's bane?
blueogre
Bane?
NordicBlue
He means Iva.
Saf 91
blueogre - Branislav "Bane" Ivanovic
Nika
I expect Drog to be better vs Arsenal. He seemed a step slow most of today, but was looking more active towards the end.
ZeeNut
Carlo says Frank might play on Sunday......
Saf 91
it seems the ivorien doctors kinda messed things up, drogba's rib wasn't fractured afterall. on the bright side though, they left him out of the squad cos of that. He seemed cautious in his play today, is evans' ghost haunting him?
blueogre
Can anyone get stats on flo? I think he should be topping our assist charts, good game.nico is just consistent. It was refreshing to see that porto hasnt forgotten deco's previous work for them.A rousing ovation.they appreciate former players.eto got stick when he never wanted to leave in the first place, its a shame.
Chelsea24/7
saf if frank plays on sunday i'll name my soon-to-be-born love child mariana kovacevic irrespective of the sex :)
blueogre
A subdued performance but effective none the less. Chelsea are one of the best at being effective when in low gear! They can then suddenly turn it on ....which they will against Arsenal! Malouda is mountains better now than the previous two years...he actually looks a class act.
55blue
Mikel was solid in the last 2 games too, and Ballack looked unfit today..... might see a surprise in midfield on Sunday.... Personally, I would play Mikel, Essien, Malouda, Ballack.
Saf 91
We were second best for most of the game..still work done..another win..But if we r gonna let the opposition play their game and wait for the perfect time to unleash our play then we will be run down by Arsenal this weekend
samuraisuraj
I thought Ivanovic had a shocker today. He lost possession too many times and his crossing was rubbish. I personally thought Zhirkov was a huge disappointment and would take Ashley over him any day. Pretty stale performance but now we're only the 2nd English team (after United) to beat Porto at home ever.
johnnywarren
If Anelka is still behind Ballack in our site poll next time around, I shall demand a recount....or report it to the United Nations Observers!!
mutters
lol mutters .. anyway good result and thats all we needed. We'll worry about performances when it matters.
blueKnightz09
Good result tonight.A win is a win, away from home in Europe, clean sheet and all the usual cliches!!! Ancelotti is the reason I feel this will be your year in Europe!!! And as a United season ticket holder I also feel you lot have the League wrapped up aswell!!! We did deserve more at the Bridge but goals win games, so fair play!!!
java
Deco hit the referee with a freekick it seems? HAHA!
JT_daniel
Porto are pretenders- nothing more. Hulk is hugely overrated. Wish we would see more of Drogba/Anelka/Malouda tandem in the big games. Malouda plays sparingly and his timing and understanding with Drogba in particular is off. Fantastic ball from Malouda for the tap in. We are going to need more goals from Nic, Malouda, et. al. as defenses are really keying in on Drogba. Not sure he saw one decent look at goal today. Deco put in his worst performance in recent memory. Porto had plenty of chances to at least equalize but are not up for it. Can't sell your best players every year and expect to maintain same level of competence.
Drogstark
Arsenal really looks banged up for Sunday. Beware the cornered, wounded animal.
Drogstark
Drogs was back after a nasty injury, Drogstark! And maybe Deco was nostalgic facing his old club? :-)
JT_daniel
I thought Malouda wasnt interested in playing balls to zhirkov for some reason. Deco and Ballck were really poor, constantly losing the ball in key areas. Drogba needs to understand when to release the ball as he tries to beat defenders with skill and loses out. Anelka was awesome constantly running into key areas with the ball. Overall a very good display, but need to improve A LOT if we want to get anything from Emirates.
crazyforchelsea
cfc, Le Arse without Van Persie, Gallas, Clichy, Gibbs- I'm not "too" worried.
JT_daniel
From what I saw Feckin Deco was playing for Porto?? CAREFREE
moose56
deco was dross, malouda our best player and i never thought i'd say that!!
springy
Come on springy, Malouda's been impressive for quite some time!
JT_daniel
Drogba "tries to beat defenders with skill" when he isn't seeing the ball in the box. He shouldn't have to drop that deep, but has to if he wants to see the ball at all. Usually don't see him drop deep regularly until past the 30 minute mark if he hasn't seen the ball yet. If Drogba has to beat 2 or 3 defenders with the ball, it will be a long day. It isn't his skill set, although he can do it quite nicely against average talent or if the defense is not keyed on him. This is why players like Ribery interest Ancelotti and Chelsea - they run down the middle, right at defenders and force them to miss or commit. A quality scoring chance results for the penetrator or the striker. We still do not have this player - it is really all we lack. They do exist but tend to congregate in packs (Kaka and Ronaldo; Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi (although Xavi does it more with insane passing instinct than ball skill); Fabregas, Arshavin and Nasri; Ronaldinho and Seedorf; Gerrard). There are others I am sure. We need to find them. Deco will not do on a consistent basis and Joe Cole is not good enough, particularly against top flight opposition.
Drogstark
yeah jtd i was a bit harsh!! :))
springy
Deco really was terrible in every way possible, and Drogstark is absolutely right about how his performance hinders that of DD's, in particular. Strikers need a good ball played to them and Deco wasn't able. We're accustomed to seeing Nico drop so deep, but DD is better near the box. A solution for Arsenal is to play Malouda at the top of the diamond; he's a more accurate short-ball passer than Deco these days. Put Ballack and Essien on either side and Mikel in the holding role. I'm a little concerned about Ballack's fitness for Sunday, since he looked so immobile versus Porto. Then again, he practically played behind Ivanovic on the right side for the majority of the match...
RadioactiveD
Joe Cole will be begging to be played at the tip of the diamond. I think he deserves a start there at least.
mutters
Actually, Feco forgot he was not playing for Porto. (Sorry somebody, I know I plagiarised!)
JT_daniel
I'm watching the replay of yesterday's match- We simply did'nt want to score yesterday int he first half!!!
JT_daniel
OOoh I tell you what, we could've scored 3-4 if only Drogs was a little more interested! So many super crosses from Zhirkov and Malouda!
JT_daniel
I found this game a bit of a bore.. We were lucky to win, but ahead of meeting with an Arse perhaps it's understandable.
emigre
Hah, penalty not given at 67 minutes! Zhirkov bundled down by Fernando. Now if only Ancelotti was as incompetent as Shirehalexfriggusen, he would've lost the match and moaned about the ref!
JT_daniel
Has nothing to do with interest, JTD. Drogba does not feature with Malouda enough, and with Zhirkov hardly ever. Their understanding is rusty (with Malouda) and non-existent (with Zhirkov). Unless you are contending Drogba is pulling out of chances, which was not the case yesterday.
Drogstark
Nope, Drogstark, I'm watching the match as I type. No question of understanding. The Drogs was'nt simply interested. No proper runs, sluggish running- Oh he was'nt interested.
JT_daniel
I don't doubt your watching. You just aren't seeing.
Drogstark
I think we should bid 100 million for Iniesta. He is the youngest and the best fit for top of the diamond role.
crazyforchelsea
Hey, I was watching extra carefully when you said that. I'm 100% sure.
JT_daniel
Cfc, you sarcastic, right? :-)
JT_daniel
chelsea were dominant in the game against porto considering they were away and porto had a great home advantage
leeimp95
No I am not. He is young, great passer, lovely skills, can hold the ball for 90 minutes without losing, never shows ego. Can not get any better.
crazyforchelsea
Malouda was top notch..same goes for Anelka.......Drogba must have been conserving energy for le arse
CHELSEAGEE
Essien was crap when he came on
csfraw
csfraw! essien was crap?
blueogre
Essien upped the pace and provided the forward drive we were missing!
Merlin
Essien started the move that resulted in Anelka's goal. Isn't csfraw the knob who recently started that thread about selling Essien in the forums? Dude are you really such a knob?
