'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Spanked Arse

Later on Sunday, many football fans tuned into the Barcelona - Real Madrid game. Billed as the best fixture in the world, the match dubbed 'el clasico` was rubbish, an exercise in two sides trying not to lose and with a gameplan to cancel each other out through players getting into each others` faces and stifling the midfield. Given the players on the pitch (six of the ten finalists for this year`s Ballon d`Or were involved in the match), there was little quality on display.

By contrast, the game at the Emirates was a riveting spectacle. Unless you were an Arsenal fan, in which case, it must have been quite painful. It was a lesson in football and how to destroy reputations in 90 minutes. How to make the most of your advantages and nullify the opposition`s qualities.

But despite being comprehensively outplayed on the pitch and second best in all areas, one man saw something different. Yes, the manager who became famous for not seeing when his players committed red card offences, saw a match whereby "absolutely everything went for Chelsea". Arsène Wenger added that "The score is a very unfair reflection of the game but it is the score. The first shot on goal they scored and with their second cross they scored."

Wenger then went on to declare that his team were on top in all areas except the scoreline. "I am used to definite conclusions from people who see the score and have great knowledge. But I believe, let people talk and let's play tomorrow and go back to training and practice."

"And that's always what you get in an excessive world. I personally believe from what I've seen, that was not the case. I never had the impression that we could not win this game we were quite on top for a lot of the game." Pausing to take his meds, Arsène declared that "If you come on Tuesday, I will give you an analysis of the game, physically, technically, and you will be surprised. But I cannot stop you from having your own conclusions. Because when Drogba pushes one away or Ivanovic makes three fouls and pushes people away against Villa, he looks much stronger. But you would be surprised if you see the final analysis of the game, they have an advantage in the impact, but that didn't make them win the game today. In the play today, you will see them 60 percent behind the ball, and that has nothing to do with physical impact."

Eh? This comes from the man who, before the game, boasted that "We cannot be considered a young team any more. We have to show we have grown up. There comes a period for every team when they have to show their strengths. For us, this moment has arrived. Chelsea will be one of our biggest tests and we have to prove we are ready, focused and confident. We have to win all our home games against the title fighters. If we do that, we can put ourselves in a very strong position."

But Arsenal didn`t, they failed their biggest test, so maybe they still are a young team. A project. A work in progress. They are, in Arsène`s assessment, not in a strong position.

Any assessment of Arsenal`s possession ratios, of the percentage of short passes that met their target, are completely meaningless. These are figures that help explain why you win or lose. However, yesterday Chelsea had only 44% possession and 80,2% pass rate compared to Arsenal`s 83,3%. There is no point having the ball more than the opposition when you can`t use it. Arsène`s tactics, selection, preparation are all wrong virtually by definition if he loses 3-0 at home, nobody will take consolation from a load of numbers as the key statistic, the scoreline, is the one that matters.

Tellingly, most of the commentocracy disagree with Wenger. 'Have faith in Le Professeur` is what Arsenal fans usually declare. Virtually all the Arsenal blogs are saying something different this morning: the gap between Arsenal and Chelsea is a gulf that Arsenal are not likely to bridge this season. This is because Arsenal`s true worth was cruelly exposed yesterday, but also because Chelsea are fast running away at the top of the table. In all areas Chelsea are currently the best team in the table: they have scored as many goals as 'free-scoring` Arsenal, but have combined devastation at the front with stinginess at the back, failing to concede in hours and hours. Chelsea`s goal difference is currently 11 better than second-placed Manchester United.

Above all, this Chelsea have a mental strength. The decision to disallow a goal yesterday was harsh, but it is hard to argue that that was the key moment in the match. Chelsea are back to the feelings of invincibility that they enjoyed under the halcyon José Mourinho days.

That`s a mental strength that comes from physical domination. Arsenal`s squad was considerably smaller than Chelsea`s, and it showed. Arsenal`s defence filled their shorts when Nicolas Anelka or Didier Drogba came in, and lost any number of one on ones. William Gallas was at fault for Drogba`s first goal, and Tomas Vermaelen (who otherwise has started very well in England) felt the need to intervene with Drogba in the vicinity for the second.

And Carlo Ancelotti is making the most of his squad. By definition, he got everything right yesterday. Many were surprised at Jon Obi Mikel`s inclusion ahead of, say, Michael Ballack, but Ancelotti already said that he has five midfielders and three places, so some rotation is in order. That rotation is to keep players fresh and to try out nuances in formation and personnel.

For the Arsenal fans, this made for unpleasant and painful viewing. Those in the ground deserve what they saw for their moronic booing of Ashley Cole. This is the fourth season since Cole left Arsenal, he hasn`t said very much (apart from positive things) about Arsenal, Arsenal fans should get over it. Yet they booed every time the left-back touched the ball. It was pathetic to hear. In particular it was counter-productive as it did not succeed in destabilising Cole, who provided two key crosses leading to goals, successfully shutting up the boo boys.

But the Emirates faithful had a worse afternoon. The referee, Andre Marriner, stopped play when an object (believed to be a camera) was thrown at Frank Lampard as he prepared to take a corner. Mariner`s reaction to the incident was exemplary: he took the object to the 4th official, and mentioned the incident in his match report. The FA will now contact the Gunners as they gather further information and judge whether sanctions are in order.

In any case, the Arsenal faithful received enough punishment. That includes the humiliation of being seen leaving the ground in droves with 20 minutes to go. By the final whistle, the Emirates was half empty. Some faithful and loyal support.

My old man used to say that, when you score three goals away, it`s in any case a great result. To come to the Emirates and win 0-3 is an extraordinary achievement, against a team that had clocked up straight wins at home until now. In the process, Chelsea might have broken Arsenal`s title chances by exposing them cruelly.

But the final word has to go to Didier Drogba, or more precisely Arsène Wenger`s description of the striker. "He's a good player," said Wenger, who added that the Pacific Ocean is a little humid. "It's funny because he doesn't do a lot but he is efficient in what he does. You would be surprised by the number of balls that he touched today. Drogba is in a period where he kicks the ball and it goes in".

Yes, apart from scoring 14 goals for Chelsea (and being the top scorer not only of the Blues but of every Premier League side), creating a record number of assists, steamrollering over defenders, carrying out more than his fair share of defensive duties, what exactly does Didier Drogba do?

What exactly does Didier Drogba do? Kick Arse....Wengers mainly!.......Good read cend!

Awesome article Cend.Wenger is just a whiner. No suprises really.
blueKnightz09
Maybe he did not have too many touches (17th or so out of all players I believe), but statistically he was first for amount of shots on target, first for assists in attacks and obviously a big fat first for goals. Good enough for me...
TonyBlue
It's already past 24 hours to the battle. So stop this needless gloating. It was only a game against a group of college-goers who haven't yet finished learning the trade in totality. It goes without saying that DD's a real top class footballer. An enigma, an unsolved mystery in himself. But his stark failure to trouble the vile Mancscums EVER till date, still do come back to bother me personally. Play him against them, and all you get are fantastic vanishing acts, insipid acts of stupidity in potentially vital situations, and shameless grins after hoofing the thing to the upper stands. I know he'll answer me resoundingly some day, but it needs to happen fast. Until then, let's just shut up, play some football, win some hearts and genuine plaudits of the masses.
Tambling
Who cares how many times he touched the ball? The two times he touched it into the back of the net are surely all that matters, right? I suppose we shouldn't have expected anything less of Wenger's post-match whining and moaning. He talks about the disallowed goal, but no mention of Sagna's clear foul on Anelka in the first half, which was a stonewall penalty. As ever with Mr Wenger, he sees only what he wants to see.
daspecial1
Arsene's a sore loser. Period. This is nothing new, and while I appreciate Cendrowski's willingness to refute some of Arsene's points, I personally won't give his comments any second thought. Why bother? He's in total denial about his players and their ability to cope against the very best in Europe. They're not good enough, and by association, he isn't either. You can only rely on old glory for so long--his time is up. He's past it.
RadioactiveD
Tambling- "But his stark failure to trouble the vile Mancscums EVER till date"- Aren't you forgetting the 2007 FA Cup Final, which we won thanks to an OT goal from Drogba?
rslack
Sanctions must be taken if there's a pic like arsene's is on the camera.yep like I said dung under his nose,he got a good whiff of it.
Chelsea24/7
College goers? The average age of the side that played us yesterday was 25 years and 3 months. This small-minded mentality isn't a result of inexperience, it's a trait. Arsenal players just lack the cojones to perform on the big occasions.
Saf 91
rslack - and the assist to Ballack during our 2-1 win.... and Wes Brown was more than a little troubled when he tried wrestling with Drogba a few weeks ago..... he was a couple of inches away from scoring the winner against them in the CL final too.....
Saf 91
PATHETIC SAD LOSERS.
djdutts
arsene looks like mr bean in the picture at the top of this article - great!
eddy_theeel
Wenger's been playing the 'my players are very young and need time to gel and learn' card for the last five years!
daspecial1
calm down guys I'm sure he's just yawning

Good to read a Cend article up to his normal good standard instead of the ghostwritten ones.

Not much class shown by your lot again. Such thing as bad winners. Rather than have a big smile on your faces and take great satisfaction in demolishing us, you have to take the extra step and gloat, insult and act like spoilt brats.
paul_ownz
Drogba always troubles United, at least every time I have seen the sides play, with one exception - the rain soaked affair at Old Trafford last year (nobody troubled United that day). True, only one goal, but it was a big one - won us the FA Cup. The Drogba haters soon forget, especially when he starts to get some good press. Shot off the post in the CL Final came so close to winning us that one as well. Several assists against United that I can recall (1st game for Chelsea - headed on for Gudjohnsen's game winning goal, beautiful cross for I can't recall whom in the game where he and Ballack fought over the free kick - I am sure there are more). He even created the goal in our last United encounter - just ask Wes Brown and Ferguson. As for winning hearts and "genuine plaudits," typical crap. If he hasn't won your approval yet, he never will. By the way, what is a genuine plaudit? One from whom does not wish to give it? Sounds like it to me. Go mumble in your beer with Tony "Why didn't Chelsea and Marseille love me like they love Didier" Cascarino and convince one and other Drogba sucks. You'll be in more sympathetic company.
Drogstark
Haha I gotta say catchy title. But back to the topic at hand. This is an unbiased view even though I may have wanted an Arsenal win. Arsenal were toothless, they weren't going to score if that game lasted two years. You stopped them from playing their football with devastating effect. I was actually quite impressed by that. Arsenal had the bulk of the play and you played on the counter but at home thats no surprise. The second goal by Vermaelen changed the game imo but if they had scored from all that early pressure in the second half, anything could've happened. They didn't. They went back to passing the ball sideways. What even made me chuckle were their attempts at crossing the ball into the Chelsea box. Not sure to whom it was to or who they were expecting to outjump Terry or Carvalho. Basically, I've never seen Arsenal so poor going forward and it was a bitterly disappointing sight! But I think the media is being a bit too harsh on Arsenal. Arsenal were rarely outmuscled. They held their own, controlled the midfield and just lacked ideas in the final third. Drogba took his goals with aplomb and contrary to Wenger's beliefs I think he meant that first goal. But the media make it seem like he's the greatest there ever was. If strikers are to be judged on their goalscoring prowess and not how well they track back, Torres is still ahead of Drogba and its a shame he plays for THAT team. I know none of you will believe this and I'll get slated for it but I'm willing to take that risk. But then again, it's just my opinion.
ForeverUnited
The El Classico, was in some ways similar to match at Emirates. Arsenal play can be compared to the way Barcelona play. Real Madrid was playing a physical game, but the deadlock was broken by a player like Ibrahimovic. So instead of whining Arsene should go and get somebody like Ibra. I refute the point that el classico was rubbish, RM was more attacking than Chelsea at Emirates. Our strategy was spot on, we took advantage of their lack of height and physicality.
vetri
Players are to be judged on their overall contribution to the game and the team, FU. Simple as that. Torres (a la Henry) is a one trick pony - he scores goals. Which is great. Drogba does that and then some. The two best strikers in the league are Drogba and Rooney. Torres is a distant third for me. I would pick Didi and Wayne before the Fancy Boy every day.
Drogstark
Drogstark - But who can deny Henry's legendary status(well before the handball fiasco) or Alan Shearer's or Andy Cole or Ian Wright? Raul? Strikers are to be judged on their goals imo. Overall contribution is what midfielders are judged upon. Strikers are paid to score the goals and secure those wins. On that basis, it'd be hard to argue against Torres - who already has 10 goals in the prem alone and has barely played all season.
ForeverUnited
FU- Doesn't you original premise dismantle your own argument then? If Torres has 10 goals, and Drogs has 11, and the only thing that matters are goals scored- then Drogba wins that contest.
rslack
Torres for Liverpool in all competitions - 10 goals in 14 games. Drogba - 14 in 16 games. As for legendary status, no comment on Shearer, Cole or Wright as I never saw them play. Henry is a wonderfully gifted player. Never feared him in a big game. Only time I can recall him coming up big was against Brazil in the 2006 World Cup when he tapped home that exquisite ball from Zidane. I guess Henry is a legend, but not for me. Raul is certainly a legend in Madrid. I put him on par with Sheva - played for a huge club (there is none bigger) all his career and benefited from outstanding service. That said, he will likely not average a goal every other game for Madrid. A poacher extraordinaire. There are others like him - Inzaghi, Van Nistelroy. All inferior to Drogba.
Drogstark
HAHA LOSERS!!!!!!!!!! Arsene is a fecking loser.
JT_daniel
Personally, I think Torres is a better footballer than Drogba in the same way that Messi is a better footballer than Ronaldo. But I think Drogba and Ronaldo are far more effective. In a one off game where you could guarantee every player playing at the peak of their personal ability - you'd probably have Torres and Messi. But over the course of a season, where simply being fit enough to endure a large number of games and avoid injury would be a factor - I'd take Drogba and Ronaldo without a second thought as they'd score more simply by being available. To be honest, you could say the same for chelsea and arsenal. On their day arsenal will pass anyone to death, but over the course of a season chelsea will get the job done. On a side note, are you chelsea boys just gloating so much because this was a london derby? or have you genuinely let this early season form go to your head? Even in your mourinho days (where you were genuinely taking the level of football in the premier league to another level) I don't recall any of you being this arrogant - even a couple of your players have started piping up. Remember that pride comes before a fall.
tuscan3000
Torres is a completely different player to Drogba - you can't compare them. Yes they both play up front, but Torres is more of a finisher, Drogba is the world's best target man. Torres has a better touch and finish than Drogba, but Drogba is more powerful, more of a hit man and plays a completely different role. You can't compare apples with lemons, even though you can eat them both.
djdutts
^^^ I agree, comparing the two is ridiculous. They're literally on opposite sides of the striker scale.
johnnywarren
It's just a case of a manger publicly sticking up for his team and pumping out the classic 'we played well' rhetoric. Arsene's certainly not the first manager to go down the aforementioned path!
Osgood_Spirit
Ridiculous comments about Didier though, maybe the lack of a game changing striker at the Emptyrates has ruffled his feathers! :-)
Osgood_Spirit
He dosent have many touches? He plays all over the place scores goals defends from the front. He is the best forward in the league!!! Torres is the best finisher but needs a good supply line Drogba can score with bad ball!
cliftond
Drogba is the best in the world...simples.Torres,the girly-man came to the bridge and couldn't do nothing but drogba was the direct architect of two goals...I thought this argument ended that day...it's surprising though how Manure fans seems to drool over torres...very sad. Before anybody accuse me of playing the race card,I'm a white man who thinks if Drogba was white and maybe English,he would be considered the best at what he does...He is wholly underrated just like Samuel Eto'o was underrated in Barcelona even after winning two champions league titles for them...Opening the score against Arsenal(2006) and sending vidic to KFC before he opened the score against Manure last year...There u have it...FACTS Foreverunited, answer this simple question....If drogba and torres were both English, who would you rather have to partner Wayne rooney at the world cup...An all round player who defends, supports the midfield and scores goals..while creating several assist or torres, who goes into hiding if others don't perform.....hmmmm...ok.l thought so.
CHELSEAGEE
I'd take Ronaldo over Messi any day. For that matter, I'd take Iniesta and Xavi before the Argentine as well. Comparing players is not the issue. Its who you want on your squad if you can only have one.
Drogstark
Foreverunited, how can anyone who thinks that benitez is better tacticly than ancelotti be taken seriously. you started off well in your first post then predictable you spout the verbal diarrhea. "but IF they had scored from their early pressure"!!! they didnt look likely to and most of all THEY DIDNT!! stop going on about if buts and maybes ffs. "arsenal were rarely outmuscled" oh yes they were mate, every time they came into the last 3rd and especially when they crossed in the box(as you point out) "they controlled the midfield" oh really?? nice triangle passes dont control the midfield, teams dont get walloped 3-0 at home by controlling the midfield and not getting outmuscled (in the box) and they certainly dont win on ifs buts and maybes. get real chappie ffs!!!
springy
springy - Again.....Ancelotti is no tactician, he just has a better team. And the 3-goal scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game. I stand by every statement I made in that first post. At the moment the media loves you and will write anything to big you and your players up further. Don't read too much into it and don't get ahead of yourselves. There are still points to be lost and won.
ForeverUnited
Fu the media loves us? Please mate, talk sense. You lot are the media darlings and you are already quaking in your boots with this nonsense your spouting.
JT_daniel
