Chelsea reopen Anelka contract talks?

According to inside reports this afternoon, Chelsea have reopened talks with striker Nicolas Anelka over a new two-year contract extension.

The Frenchman's current deal expires in the summer of 2011, and it is believed talks over extending his West London stay had stalled at the turn of the year. However, the much-travelled star and the club have now apparently got back to the negotiating table, and are attempting once again to tie him to a deal that could possibly see the forward finish his career at Stamford Bridge.

Some commentators have noted Anelka's recent dip in form coinciding with the breakdown in his Chelsea talks, although that perhaps ignores the issue of manager Carlo Ancelotti having deployed him in a slightly wider position since Didier Drogba returned from the African Cup of Nations. However, against Stoke on Sunday, the hitman, who turns 31 next week, was back to his best as he led the line more centrally.

Anelka, who won the Premier League's Golden Boot last season, has already notched up 13 goals this campaign and, here at VitalChelsea, we see the resuming of contract negotiations as terrific news.

NOOOOOOOO WE MUST SIGN A NEW STRIKER NOT RENEWING THAN WHY DONT THEY RENEW JOE COLE HIS CONTRACT I KNOW THAT THIS SITUATION COME WHAT A STUPID CLUB ANELKA 31 YEARS OF AGE IS TO OLD TO RENEW ***** THIS MAN
pascal_blueguy
Class and quality are what's important, pascal_blueguy, irrespective of age.
daspecial1
but he is not class we can better aguero or a zarate
pascal_blueguy
chelsea must sell : belleti ferreira carvalho deco ballack kalou anelka in: di maria aguero ribery/ elia luiz ozil kroos henri saivet lukaku hamsik diego perroti
pascal_blueguy
You obviously have no idea what you're talking about pascal_blueguy. How would you keep them all happy when the majority of them would be fighting for a similar starting positions?
JoeyBlueShoes
Do you really watch any of your games or are you plain ignorant? "He is not class"?? I don't know how these tabloids are supposed to get their info but if they're right, then its about time we rewarded Nico for his excellent performances in the last couple of years.
JT is God
It was actually Sky Sports News that ran with the story as their 'breaking news' this afternoon, JT is God. Not sure whether that gives the story any more credibility though?
daspecial1
Anelka still has two good years, at least, left at the top!
merlin
Pascal_blue: Do you realize that you wanted to buy 6 or 7 midfielders on your list? Along with Essein, Lamp. Joey, Malouda, Yuri, Mikel and Matic on your remainings, that would be a lot of midfielders, wouldn't it? Have you watched Nico playing any games during ACN?
tranton
Dont care how old a player is as long as they still got pace & nico has it.Its so unfair that joey's contract is not under review.Dont you think we'll get better performances from joey once his future is secured? its not helping anyone stalling it.
Chelsea24/7
What does Joey have to fecking do to get some game time let alone a new contract?!
Chelsea24/7
I would not mind selling him if he does not stop his excruciatingly painful leg twitching act and turning away from goal everytime he has the ball. We need someone who can take on defenders.
crazyforchelsea
Even with Anelka and Drogba both in the team we still have room to sign one young striker in the summer. That is if some of the youngsters we already have on board don't break in the first team. As for the Joe Cole vs. Anelka dilemma I'd rather keep Anelka in the team. He's been the better player of the both by far.
zolastic
Merlin hit the nail on the head, another 2 years whilst blooding Sturridge and any potential new signings (Aguero?) would be good to have a world class finisher behind Drogba just in case.
LamparDrogbAnelKalou
I was very sceptical of Anelka when he arrived, mainly due to his old reputation. He's been a great asset to Chelsea, has stepped up when Drogba is out and his movement and play off the ball is still world class. Just because he gets a new contract doesn't mean he stays for 2 years. Good player.
DutchBlue
We should tie up Anelka for 2 more years but we should not be paying him crazy money.. we need to cut back on the saluries. We should also buy Aguero even if Anelka stays!
Rune3k
We need to get Zidan, the Egyption international...He's strong, quick, and has an eye for goal...Plus he never quits...That's what we need. I don't think he'll be difficult to get, or expensive. But this is Chelsea, we like to buy players who are past their peak for some reason. We need players who haven't one anything, not players who've one it. I don't understand this experience crap, how do you expect them to get experience. Almost all the chelsea players are Ex CL winners.. They have the mentality is like "been there done that", "now lets rob this club blind and ask for more money after each contract expires." Terrible!
BluesManCFC
But this is Chelsea, we like to buy players who are past their peak for some reason. We need players who haven't one anything, not players who've one it. yes you say wise words but chelsea they buy young players but they dont play that is the joke
pascal_blueguy
i also read this morning that chelsea want to extend ballack's contract - on half his current earnings. wtf! we really need to get rid of some of the "old" players - especially in midfield as ballck, deco - and at the back carvalho and belettiare in muy opinion past it
eddy_theeel
I guess Agüero will consider a move to Chelsea..as soon as he turns 30. I am also looking forward to see Kakuta in the starting line-up in 10-15 years.
chelsey
Ah well, I guess we will have to settle for these experienced (as this seems to be our new synonym for "old") players. The club is most important after all, not the players. As long as we are on top of the table, I am content.
chelsey
Hate to tell you, Aguero fanatics: Anelka would start at Atletico over him. In fact, Aguero isn't usually starting at Atletico anyway! I find it unbelievable that anyone would be so disloyal, so eager to kick Anelka to the curb, when he's been terrific for Chelsea since he came over.
RadioactiveD
Cmon everyone Anelka has been a very astute signing from grant ......we have drogba as a deadly finisher but we need someone like anelka for his off ball ability and speed..agree'd sometimes he goes backgoal too much but you certainly cannot leave him out . And as for Aguero he wanted 200k or even not may wan't 160k if that's the thing i will never buy him , think Angel Di maria is better buy

There was a time when Chelsea appeared to be a winning machine. Under Jose Mourinho and his 4-3-3 system, the sight of Chelsea on your club’s fixture list was an ominous sight. Whilst today under Carlo Ancelotti the club arguably plays slightly more attractive football, there is a feeling amongst clubs that you can now get at Chelsea. Defensively they lack the steeliness that Mourinho enforced, and Petr Cech is certainly not the same player since his collision with Stephen Hunt. However, another difference between Chelsea past and Chelsea present is the teams width, or lack their of. Jose Mourinho and Phil Scolari signed Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa respectively for Chelsea, in a bid to provide width, whilst the midfield narrowed into a diamond. Utilising full-backs in an attacking sense is a fashionable tactic, enforced by a number of clubs. Barcelona for example use Dani Alves to great effect on their right hand side. However, Barcelona also utilise Messi, Pedro and Thierry Henry in wide attacking positions, whilst at Manchester United, Park Ji-Sung, Cristiano Ronaldo, Giggs, Antonio Valencia, Nani and even Wayne Rooney have all provided width for their team over the years. Is it a coincidence that Chelsea’s three year stint without a title has coincided with the club selling off their wingers? Arguably, Chelsea’s problems began at the beginning of Jose Mourinho’s last full season in charge. That season, the Portuguese reportedly had Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack forced upon him. With the Ukrainian and German joining the ranks at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho could no longer deploy the 4-3-3 system that had been so effective in his first two seasons. Didier Drogba had to play, but so too did Shevchenko. Further, Ballack’s arrival in midfield meant that a 4-3-3 would be impossible, as Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and Claude Makelele were all labelled ‘untouchable’, and yet a place had to be found for Ballack, the clubs highest earner. The likes of Ballack and Shevchenko signalled the end for Damien Duff, Arjen Robben, Shaun Wright-Phillips and now apparently Joe Cole. Chelsea lack the pace offered by Robben, Wright-Phillips and Duff in years previous, and so can no longer counter-attack on teams, or stretch opposition fullbacks . In fact, the width provided to Manchester City by Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips against Chelsea a few weeks ago was almost reminiscent of how Mourinho used attacking wide men to attack from the flanks, but offer support to full backs. The space Bellamy and Barry had on Chelsea’s right hand side for the second and third goals for example, showed how narrow and isolated Chelsea’s full-backs can at times be. Whilst Chelsea appeared to run out of ideas in the game as Manchester City absorbed the pressure, and then countered. Chelsea may well win the league, FA Cup, or even the Champions League this season. However, at present it would be surprising to see the West Londoners achieve such feats. The club has several players approaching the twilight of their careers, and come the summer, Chelsea should take the opportunity to begin restructuring their squad. At the moment it is heavy in central midfielders, offering all power, but little pace. Abramovich and Ancelotti should bring back the Chelsea wide boy, and with a bit of luck, might just take the Premier League title back to Stamford Bridge at the same time.

i say mesut ozil, marek hamsik ,aguero ,rodwelll

Isn't it amusing to see people suggest that we need to sell and bring in 5-6 new starters? Even Madrid's spending spree last year only brought in Alonso, Ronaldo and Kaka to the starting XI.
rslack
Share the same sentiments haji.I'm not exoecting starters but we do need a balance of width.Yeah we're the best team in the league but we do need pace.
Chelsea24/7
rslack: this club has folded the last 3 seasons. We've squandered a lead in the Prem twice this season, then went behind by a goal to Inter and we could be out in the Final 16 of the CL. Even if we win the Prem or the CL, some of our players are older...others are outta contract. Its time for some major chgs IMA, given that many of our players are either getting past it, outta contract or just not good enough.
blues first
yah although we cant get all of them we can get atleast two we have so many central midfield players essien, deco, lampard, ballack, matic, mikel we do need some width on the right ,
haji ahmed
Selling Anelka would be a bad move IMO, let him take some sort of a backseat to develop Sturridge.
