Chelsea - Van Aanholt on his Pompey debut

Coming on for Yuri Zhirkov at Fratton Park on Wednesday evening, young Patrick Van Aanholt got his first taste of first team action in a Chelsea shirt, featuring for twenty minutes as we ran out 5-0 winners.

Van Aanholt, 19, has had a very good season, with positive loan spells at Coventry City and Newcastle United under his belt, as well as a Premier League debut. The Dutch Under-21 international recently spoke out about his first appearance for Carlo Ancelotti's Blues, and his hopes for the rest of the campaign and beyond.

'I am buzzing, I had a great night last night (speaking yesterday morning) and I was really happy to make my debut,' he said. 'I am trying to get more involved in the first team and hope to be able to play a couple more times before the end of the season as well.'

'I had a fantastic month on loan at Newcastle, played seven games, and in front of more than 50,000 people, so it was a great experience for me. In the reserves you are only in front of a few hundred, but then I went to Coventry and played in front of 30,000, then Newcastle 52,000, it's a massive difference, unbelievable. I really enjoyed my time there and now I hope I can push on some more,' he told the official club site.

Van Aanholt remains in the squad for tomorrow afternoon's visit of Aston Villa, with injuries ruling out Ricardo Carvalho, Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa from the Blues' backline. Jeffrey Bruma, another of the club's promising youngsters, could also feature on the bench.

In other non-first team level news, it is pleasing to report that defender Sam Hutchinson came through the reserves' 2-1 defeat to Fulham unscathed. He played the first forty-five minutes without problem. He will now hope to rejoin Ancelotti's first team squad for the remainder of the season, particularly in light of our recent injury crisis.

if we win nothing at the end of the season, i guess we'll know how it feels to be a gooner huh. it's crazy, everytime an arsenal fan gloats, i always defend chelsea but i always forget that 5-0 overall league double drumming they gave us this year...oh...no...wait...
JoeyBlueShoes
Don't listen to that illiterate ****.
ACLamp
shady gunna - As merlin himself would no doubt say - jog on!
daspecial1
Besides, all this Goon ranting is getting away from the point - I thought Van Aanholt had a pretty decent 20mins at Pompey - one lovely ball across the box that Drogs almost buried for his hat-trick.
daspecial1
Did very well. Was pretty excited when I saw him being subbed on. As for shady gunna - what a gay ****.

Are they all voyeurs at Middle Rastern Airline Stadium? For a moment there I thought I had accidentally clicked on a Vital Arse link. Coming back to the topic, van Aanholt seems to be better going forward than defending, which seems to be a common trend in the new-age full-backs. He put in a couple of cracking crosses, and should have had an assist when Drogs missed from close range. With our injuries to so many defenders, Carlo gave an indication that both van Aabholt and Bruma could get more of a look-in. Our youngsters finally seem to be getting their due now. Lets hope that at least a couple of them make the next step to become first team regulars.

attacking instinct is good but as defender not so especially his tackles ...maybe could be used as a midfielder his attacking styles rhymes well with the midfield remember a.cole was first a winger due to an injury crisis arsene wenger choose him as l.b and the guy is rose to be one fo the best evr

Shady Gunna is either retarded or a small kid by looks of his comments. Why do you guys wanna fight with either of these? A walking elephant never stops just because a dog barked. As for Van An Holt good to see youngsters getting time under Ancelotti. Hope this will continue rather than 5-6 costly signings. Max we need will have to be 1 or 2 players who can add ronaldo kinda touch thats all. Hope we can find such player amongst Chelsea youth itself.
sandman1983
I hope he becomes Ash's permanent understudy. We need yuri in a more attacking role.
Chelsea24/7
I think Shady just joined the vital community,he had a lot to get off his chest.Hostility is probably a prerequisite when going through opposition sites. He'll learn in time that we are big boys & we talk logically without creating pathetic insults of fan names.

What have we done to incur the wrath of this toddler?
Seabourch
Wrath of this toddler? LOL! :-D
JT_daniel
And then, like London buses, you wait years for your first team debut, and then two games come along at once!
