Looking to the 2013-14 season

Well, I am now trying not to dwell on any more bad news that the players and the board are trying to dish out against the clubs loyal fans.

During this season I have sometimes felt that the players have some personal vendetta against Roman in particular and the fans in general.

The reason I am looking at the 2013-14 season is because I think that we missed the bus last season and this season as well.

Though a mass exodus of players will be expected during the summer, how big will this exodus be?

And, given the exodus will we be able to replenish the squad with the great quality considering the FFP and now that there are bigger sharks like Man City, Malaga, Monaco and some Asian teams?

How will we develop stability on the pitch with almost 70% new players and perhaps a new manager?

And lastly, will any manager of great pedigree ever want to work at CFC, considering the fate of Ancelotti and AVB?

If I were the board, I would try to solve some of the problems the following manner:

1. Manager: I don't think RDM will keep his job in the next season. So if I were in the market for a new manager, than I would probably look to hire Martin O' Neil as the new manager. He has a strong CV and can really develop the young and new players that would be put under him. He is tactically astute and has good relations with the press. His success in the Premier League with Aston Villa and Sunderland speaks for itself.

2. We need to buy players with great ability but not super stars. Superstars are difficult to manage. Players like Dyer and Sigurdssen from Swansea, will be a good shout. We already have creativity in the reserves from players like Piazon and Feruz. We have quality strikers in the reserves. I think it is high time that some of these players play the Premier League this season for at least a few games.

3. We need to write off title aspirations for the 2012-13 season: This should have been done last year or this year and utilized for squad development. If we expect to win silverware next season, than we will again have another hiring and firing session next year. Well, I am no guru in football like Kaku Frank or GabeU, and are purely from my experiences.

Feel free to comment.

LOVE THE BLUES ALWAYS.

A good article but I think you need to add something to your list. We need to make some major changes in the boardroom as well as in the first team. Buck and Gourlay are totally clueless and they have no idea what they are doing. If we get rid of them and bring some football into our boardroom we will be far more successful.

well if we don't get Jose,Pep, Capello or Loew we could get Riijkard,he is on top of my list... players to sell Drogba,Malouda,Lampard, Essien,Bossingwa,Fereira,Kalou... players to buy Hazard,Jovetic, Moutinho, Van der Wiel players to promote Piazon, Kane, Chalobah, Seremba, Feruz... and give them next year to learn to play with each other, and then season after that we can compete...if we fail to get CL football i think it would be better not to play Europa league also because it is a joke competition

I hope that Kakuta, De Bruyne and McEachran will be able to fall into the squad net season...The only chelsea legend that should stick around should be Lampard. We need some experience in that midfeild that will help guide the players in the english game. That's if Lampard is willing to actually do that. I would also be happy to see the back of Terry. He has been a great player and leader for chelsea but his endless controversies are just too much and the fact that he has an automatic slot into the team is soon going to cripple our defence as he is slowly losing touch with the modern game. Cahill and Luiz is the answer.

have to disagree about O'Neil's tactics. He gets players playing very well for him, but he isn't a tactical genuis. Would rather we looked for someone better than him. Moyes is better tactically but I think it would be a leap of faith in that he signs players that are 7/10 can he sign a 9 or a 10? Not so sure. Look at how much better Arteta has become since moving, as much as it frustrates me that Arsenal have a decent player he has improved massively, and not just because he has quality around him, because surely Moyes should have been able to sign 11 players all the calibre of Arteta. Would love to see Jose back, but not convinced, Pep wouldn;t come to ours, and I would definately agree with the Riijkard or Loew mentality. Loew put all those brilliant youngsters into the Germany team, although its is still questionable if they are good enough to win things.

I really think that us fans should stop the fantasy league that chelsea has become. See what it has done to us! Is Pep gardiola better than Ancelotti? or AVB? What guarantee do we have that he will be able to turn a new page? Is there a guarantee that Cavani or Hazard will be great for us, considering that a much better player like Toress is struggling here? We need to follow the Man Utd model of looking to hire quality, but under rated players like Valencia and Hernandez. As much as I appreciate what Pep gardiola is doing at Barcelona, he moved in to an already established set up. We have NO SET UP what so ever? We need systems in place that need professionals like Martin O'Niel/AVB. I still believe that quality is still there at the club, our players lack desire.

Nice article..frankly only the good Lord knows what goes on in Romans head..this summers opera at Chelsea will make last summer look tame. I agree with all those who have said that for us to have hope the first thing Roman ought to do is either fire Gourlay and Buck or demote them and put in someone like Hiddink as director of football. It would also help to try and attract some old legends like Zola, Wise, Puyet, Vialli, Gullit to sit on that board or other wise get involved in the club administration so we have people there who have a clue about football and how a professional club should be run. With this background the next thing he would need to do is pick a high quality manager with established history, experience and gray hairs and give the guy free reign to run the team with reference to the board as regards signings and transfers only not on team selections, game strategies, formations etc. This needs to be done and dusted before this season ends so that the new boss has the full pre season to craft his team and get signings in. As good as RdM has been i dont see him being the choice for one big reason..has has too close a relationship with our vets. The new manager needs to be someone with the spine and ice in veins to look some of these guys in the eye and tell them clearly..it is my way or the high way as well as to decide dispassionately who needs to be let go..no questions asked. With step 2 done we could then move to step 3 which is getting some new players and getting rid of some. We need a revolution not evolution like AVB thought. That means in my opinion 5-7 players need to go this summer..i wont waste time here about who i feel..most of us can agree on who at least 4 of these should be. We will then need to bring in 5-7 new players which could include some of our out on loan players and youth players as well as 3-4 quality new signings. When we are done with need to be back to the old Jose maxim of having a 25 man squad with at least two strong options at each position that provide high level competition for each position. For once this business of new signings needs to be done efficiently and quickly..for once i would like to see us handle this like ManU namely get all the new signings and loan recalls done and dusted by July 15. For this to happen the underground work needs to be going on to do these deals right now..we should be doing what Bayern and Arsenal are doing in identifying our targets and getting them signed if at all possible before this season ends. Final step (step 4) is for the new manager and his team to have a really strong pre season preperation where competition is stiff, training is high level not at pedestrian pace and where there is a return to fundamentals like accurate passing, ball possession, quality first touch, shooting accuracy, set pieces etc. It is during this time that are designated free kick takers and penalty takers should be identified based on merit rather than name recognition. It would also be then that we established a team identity of how we play and do some work on plan B and Plan C styles of play. So there would be my summary of how we should prepare for the next season.

BTW while we have been focusing on trying to catch Spurs (and not doing a good job of it i may add) NewCastle have refused to fade. They are already 2-0 up against West Brom at their home (this was the same place we lost not too long ago and essentially sealed AVBs fate). They are playing so much better than we are though their squad has cost a fraction of what we spent on ours..It is teams like them that show so clearly that so much is wrong with the way Chelsea FC is run. If they keep this lead they will draw level with us on points. Can you imagine a scenario where NewCastle end the season higher than us in the BPL? Dont laugh..the joke could be on us the way we have been playing..maybe it would not be that bad if this happens either..if we can avoid ending up in the Europa league even if we miss on Champions league football next season it wont add any more tears to the ones i will shed for us dropping out of the top 4.

GabeU, quite agree that's something I've been saying for ages, zidane at Madrid, leonardo at psg, hierro at malaga, rumminegge and beckenbauer at Bayern, they all do the same thing, why can't we put someone like this on our board. Zola would be my ideal candidate. These guys all do the same job they scout/attract the best players for there teams, and they usually get them due to the fact of who they are.

agree with GabeU aswell. Our club is run too much as a business.Okay i understand the needs to deal with financial dealings in a sensible manner but it seems gourlay and buck take things too serious on the business front whereas if we had someone like hiddink, zola etc then the players who we are negotiating with and explaning our ambitions would take alot more notice from two highly regarded people instead of two 'bank managers'.It also adds a sense of a family club and if i was a player who had the choice of playing for a club with 'bank managers' and 'politicians' or a club with ex players and a world class manager as a technical director then i know who i would choose.

Just bite the bullet and sell these old guards who cannot perform when needed most. The experience we are talking of is really driving us down, and the faster we let go, the better for the future of chelsea.

@ Slippy. you are really slipping if you think lampard should stay and Terry leaves. Terry is a far better asset to chelsea than lampard at the moment. Lets not forget that the current situation we found ourselves now was started as a result of lampard angst against our former coach. Lampard is slow and cannot adapt to a quick pace regime. more so he is a great disruptive influence once he finds out that he is not on the teamsheet. nobody ever heard terry complain about not playing. we need young technical players like munian, kagawa, in the midfield and some decent wingers like jovetic, lavezzi, krasic etc. a total overhaul is necessary at the moment and i sincerely blame AVB for mouthing that dross that what we need is a evolution and not a revolution. I am sure he is biting his fingers now (after been evolved out of the door).
