Four Selected

Four Selected

The long awaited announcement relating to who Roy Hodgson will be taking to the Euro 2012 Finals came at shortly after 13:00 hours (UK time) today.

After much speculation, Roy confirmed that in his twenty-three man squad there will be 4 representatives from Chelsea Football Club.

The four named are:-

• John Terry
• Frank Lampard
• Ashley Cole
• Gary Cahill

Daniel Sturridge, whose early season form suggested he might make the squad was one of five players placed on standby in case any of the strikers selected are unable to make the trip to the Ukraine / Poland.

this is the biggest load of BS ive fkin heard. woy hodgson is an absolute dik. hes choosing downing the guy with 0 goals and 0 assists in the PL this season and caroll whos played well for 5 games this season over crouch-whos been consistent all season and sturridge-who is the only flair player in the england squad. no1 else apart from OX can beat a player in a 1on1 this fkin annoyin why no richards hes been a million times better than that *****hed glen johnson y nt fkin call up fkin owen hed fit in perfectly with these mediocre ****s

Humza... Why taking it so personal?
16/05/2012 17:10:00
I agree, Stewart Downing's inclusion is an absolute atrocity. Was glad to see he got the Terry/Rio decision spot on.
16/05/2012 17:14:00
A punch in Ferdinand's face.He didn't expect to be dropped.
16/05/2012 17:21:00
but Fergie didn't help by inferring he'd struggle to play a game every four days!
16/05/2012 17:28:00
why take carroll and downing instead of sturridge. clearly the age is getting to him.
16/05/2012 17:42:00
I don't think it's a bad squad myself! As to why the likes of Downing and Carroll over Sturridge - probably the same reason Bobby has picked Kalou ahead of him. Danny has more ability but has yet to work out that it's a team game and until he does, he will not hit the heights. Carroll is a completely different players offering different things and for all the criticism, if he's on form (and recently he's been heading that way) then no defence can cope with that - certainly an excellent 'plan B' if things aren't going our way (much like Liverpool in the Cup final). So lumping it up to the big guy is not pretty but it can be effective and if it gets us out of a hole, I'm happy with that. As for Downing, well it's a harder one but he is a more natural winger than Danny and he too works an awful lot harder for the team. Sturridge will have to wake up and smell the coffee soon or he'll wreck what could be a wonderful career!
16/05/2012 17:52:00
Sturridge can come on and make an impact as a sub. Downing has been awful all season. It's an odd decision in my opinion. I'm also surprised to see the exclusion of Micah Richards, a good player who deserves to be in there.
16/05/2012 18:14:00
Richards is probably the most odd decision. In Kyle Walker's absence I'd have had Richards over Jones. As it is, Glen Johnson is our only RB and good as he is going forward, we all know he is fallible defensively. I've never ben a fan of Downing, couldn't see anything that he had to offer at all but strangely, in the last 12 months or so, despite his poor form for Liverpool, I have seen the odd glimpse of something and he worries me when playing against us (bit like Heskey, he always worried me too!). Not really sure why but it means I don't actually mind his call up!
16/05/2012 18:22:00
Ol Roy has Cajones..i will give him that..that is what it took for him to pick JT (despite the fact he actually merited a spot) and drop Rio (though he certainly did not merit a spot and even SAF essentially said so). Rio will be steaming about out for what he says and/or tweets about this. The Downing decision is a head scratcher for me and i feel Micah richards is a way better RB than Glen Johnson. I do agree however that it makes far more sense to have Carroll than Sturridge. That young man needs to refer to the 7 summer lessons i suggested for him so time back to help him become a complete player that can be relied upon by his team..till then he will be mostly hype and potential rather than substance. Having seen this line up and seen that Roy actually gave Chelsea players a more than fair shake i cannot but wish him and the three lions well..i am part English and though i consider myself first a yank, my mom is English by birth and i was born in London myself and carry a British passport in addition to my American one..Best of wishes at the Euros..England will certainly need get to the quarters will be incredible..i cant even imagine what the nation will do if England won the whole thing (very very unlikely but you never know..stranger things have happened..the Greeks and the Danes have won this tournament you know!!!).
16/05/2012 18:31:00
I actually think Sturridge will be sold if he does not smell the coffee. Missing out on the Euros could d 2 things 1.) Get him to improve as a team player or B.) Get him to move another team since the bench for the next 2 years won't guarantee him a spot in England's national team.
16/05/2012 18:35:00
@GabeU, actually, Roy is a joker. His reason for not picking Ferdinand was because he had played only 1 game. If that was the case, why did he make Steven Gerrard the Captain of the England national squad. Gerrard has only played 33 minutes of football for the national team. Secondly, he said he liked Chamberlian's performance against AC Milan especially against a midfield of Ambrosini and Pirlo. Pirlo is at Juventus and Ambrosini did not even follow AC Milan to London for that match....Downing - 0 goals and 0 assists...They are other hard working wingers for England such as Adam Johnson? QUITE FRANKLY, the guy is a clown. Not supporting England in the Euros so doesn't bother me one bit.
16/05/2012 18:43:00
33 minute of football in 1 year
16/05/2012 18:44:00
Agree KAKU, wouldn't surprise me if we cashed in this summer. Shame because there's a great player in there if he could get his attitude right. Don't really get the fuss about Rio either. He hasn't been in good form for years (even when he was, he could never actually concentrate for a whole 90 mins without making one serious goal costing **** up!) and is too much of a risk to take to a tournament anyway because he is injury prone these days. If it came down to a straight choice between him and JT (which is stupid if it did) then it must have been the easiest choice Woy had to make. JT's form has been superb lately, Liverpool aside (and I suspect a hangover there!), he's the best English CB by a country mile!
16/05/2012 18:49:00
Anyone questioning JT's inclusion is deluded. Till he is proven guilty, he is still a squad member which is why taking his Captain armband off at the time they did was quite STUPID. Similar to telling a CEO who has a court case to step down from his position, but he is still an employee of the company. Quite silly. The whole thing is turning to a joke. But Gerrard being the Captain means he will play every single game. For a player who hasn't been fit lately, this is stupid. Lampard was there to give the armband to unless of course Roy doesn't plan to use him in every single game.
16/05/2012 19:04:00
This Squad selection looks like Roy wanted to satisfy the club Quota in National Team...almost similar representative from all big clubs....No reason why Holt, Crouch not selected...I agree atleast take the reason behind Caroll, but Downing, Milner...Sorry...Johnson, Lennon, Carrick way better than these. I am not very sure how Roy is going to make the formation. Looks more like the old 4-4-2 style, but i think a 4-3-3 will give england a good chance in Euros with the team of Hart, GJ-GC-JT-AC, FL-Parker-SGer,Young-OX,Roo (Welbeck/carroll) for 1st 2 games
17/05/2012 06:48:00
Good for them and expect the 5th one to make it from the standby position
