Facts that Supported Chelsea to Win the UCL

Facts that Supported Chelsea to Win the UCL

I know many of us seriously doubted the chances of us winning once we went down 1-0 with 7 minutes to play.

However, to me, after beating Barca in that fashion, I believed fate was on our side still. Drogba struck and we pulled through in penalties. I saw someone post these facts/stats showing why it was Chelsea's destiny to win yesterday (credit to the person who found these stats).

1. The last team (Inter Milan) to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League went on to lift the trophy and win the competition against Bayern Munich in the final.

2. The last time Atletico Madrid won the Europa League, Chelsea won a Double.

3. The last English team (Manchester United) to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League, went on to lift the trophy and win the competition.

4. An English team (Manchester United) has previously won the FA Cup and gone on to win the Champions League, beating Bayern Munich in the final who lost the DFB Pokal during that season.

5. The last time Manchester City won the league title, an English team (Manchester United) won the European Cup.

6. All Champions League finals played in Munich produced a winner of the competition for the first time in their history (Nottingham Forest, Marseille and Dortmund). They all took place in Bayern Munich's previous home, the Olympiastadion.

7. The last time Manchester United went Trophyless an English Club won the Champions League (Liverpool) and they didn't finish in the top 4.

8. The Champions League Finale was on 19-05 and Chelsea Football Club was found in 1905 I found it interesting.

Hope you guys do too.

I saw these stats in the comments section of one of the articles some days before the match. Interesting. Here's one more: the last player to win the CL on his debut match was an Aston Villa goalkeeper who came on late as a sub (can't remember his name now) when Villa won the CL in 1984 or so... They beat BAYERN MUNICH to lift the European Cup. Now Betrand's done it albeit starting. So happy for him.

I saw it in a ESPN comments section. Credit it to the guy who got the facts. Just thought I would share it.

Btw, saddened by the Torres news. He seems really upset (might even leave) for not starting. I wanted him to start as well. I think if he started we would've had a more attacking threat. Check ESPN or Sky Sports.

But there was one who could make you doubt! The one last time INTER one the Champions league Atletico won the Euro and Blackpool got promoted. But now West ham won and got Promoted

@Lakupiippu - That wasn't related to Chelsea though. The abovementioned facts are.

9. Bayern couldn't hit a barn door last night

don't use a result to confuse "facts" for "trends" mate...careful with your word choice,
20/05/2012 18:52:00
otherwise the angle is "interesting" but we need to break 1 trend, that no club has ever defended the Champs League
20/05/2012 18:52:00
lol. Mq - until it's proven wrong, they are facts. But yes, I understand what you mean.

Fun information to read after the fact, but the reality is that we didn't so much win the match as Bayern gave it away. While I'm overjoyed with the outcome, I'm not so blind as to not have seen that if this were a fair game (and it's often not) we would not have won. Robbin and Schweinsteiger both missing pens? Gomez missing a sitter from 8 yds out. Our complete and total inability to even threaten Bayern's defence until Torres came on far too late. Our wings spending the entire match covering for our shortcomings on the flanks. It's best to be honest here, Lady Luck, God, the footie gods, Divine Intervention, Kharma, payback for 2008 or 2009 semi-final or Platini's arrogance..whatever the case...fortune and never giving-up on our part dictated the win. Tactics, starting line-up, substitutions, overall strategy had nothing to do with it in the slightest bit.

Okay, my final sentance in the previous post is abit too harsh. Allow me to exchange "nothing to do with it" to "little to very little to do with it".

@rockhead..i largely agree with you..i provide for my footie pals who say there is no God the exhibits of our matches against Napoli, against Barca and against Bayern..the number of escapes we had in those 5 games when mathematically computed make it nigh impossible that it all just happened by chance..Some higher power (and i know him as God) was clearly orchestrating this turn of events.
20/05/2012 23:10:00
I agree with rockhead and GabeU. I'm almost 100% sure if we were in the same situation next year against Napoli, Barca or Bayern we would lose. This year we took the chances we got plus were somewhat lucky in terms of the opposing team not capitalizing like normal (or their unluckiness). We won it this year. Next time we win it, I hope we win it convincingly. This win will always be memorable in my hearts.
