Best Managerial Choice?

So I have submitted a poll titled 'Best Choice?' containing a list of the 14 most likely managers to take over our football club as the next permanent manager (as rated by William Hill).

I'd like very much if we could get a high volume of participation in the poll as it would be nice to see who the fans choice really is.

I'll give a rundown of each possibility, and if there is someone who has been missed out by both me and William Hill, do put it into the comments section so all us fans can give it due consideration. [All odds are those presented on William Hill at the time of writing and the run downs of previous experience come from good old Wikipedia]

I'm undecided as to whether this should be a limitless project, so I'll simply say be slightly realistic: think of it as we can coax any of them to the club, but some would have higher costs than others (e.g. Mourinho would cost far more to bring in than Paul Lambert).

I ve to commend u for coming up with such a detailed acticle. very much informative at a glance. however i would narrow chelsea's top man job next season to two men: RDM & pep. my own choice would be RDM no doubt. d guy more than deserves his chance(i see him as one of our own, a true blue) but d only reason he hasnt been appointed yet is pep. roman has always wanted pep, infact i would insinuate that he settled for AVB last summer cos pep wasnt available. roman has been a great owner, a great fan too. i think no chelsea fan can doubt that. if he feels pep is d man, then pep it should be. atleast he would still be around to rescue d situation if it doesnt turn out well.

I always believed the best man for this job would be a club man. Just look at Andre Villas-Boas at Porto, Pep at Barca. I really don't know why we haven't made any significant move already to drop the word 'interim' from the front of his name, neither do I know what there's so much to think about. The more we delay the more we stand to lose as top transfer targets keep on snubbing us, Hazard being the first name on the list. And I'm sure if he does snub Chelsea, as that is what's looking likely now, it'll be because he could not talk to the manager, to find out exactly what sort of role he'd be used in etc.

But even he is given the chance his authority's gotta be respected as well. Which means you just can't sack Eddie Newton in midseason without the manager's knowledge or permission. He can't be set up to take the fall, he must be given a fair chance to prove his worth. With Pep's shadow looming over his shoulders, this is what I fear most for RDM.

Nice article mate. I would say however that your list is unduly long..there are some names mentioned on this list that are simply not on the table because they have current jobs and contracts..simpyl put they are not available no matter how much some people may want them and no matter how much money even Roman would like to spray. With that in mind the list could have the following removed right away; Jose (he just signed a contract extension with Real), Joachim loew (He has a contract with the mannscaft that extends to just beyond the 2014 world cup..there is no way Roman will get past the german federation to free the man and Loew is on record as saying he is not interested. Capello (he seemed to be a possible option earlier but a few days ago publicly declared he wasnt coming. He does not strike me as the sort of man who says one thing to do another..i get the impression he did have an interest but the terms he was given were uncceptable to him). Brendan Rodgers..has renewed his contract with the swans and has publicly declared his lack of interest in the Chelsea or Liverpool jobs. in fact his response to the question of the Chelsea Job included an insult to the Chelsea board so you can be certain he isnt coming here any time soon. With all these your list can be cut down to RDM, Pep, Redknapp, blanc, Benitez, Moyes, Van Marwik, and Rijkaard. bTW my vote on your poll was for RDM without a doubt.

Moura is playing in an unfamiliar role on the left in the first half. He has switched with Hulk in the second half...But I don't agree with his 30mm valuation by Sao Paulo. My suggestion is for us to leave that market. Their agents are hawks looking got extract Chelsea or use us to get better negotiations. The only decent price looking to come out is the sale of Ganso to Porto for 20mm or to broke AC Milan who don't have money. Ganso is beginning to have knee problems already....

If the tabloids are to be believed Liverpool have offered the manager job to Roberto Martinez and the DOF position to Louis Van Gaal. These are pretty good choices for them. Most importantly i am really worried that Liverpool who found out about their need for new management much later than we did are so much farther in the process of getting their house in order than we we are. This power vaccum we have right now cannot be attractive to any potential new signings we are chasing especially higher profile targets like Hazard and Kagawa for which there is significant competition from clubs like ManU who actually have a well set up management structure already in place.

Spot on gabeu: we are so slow in these situations. if a new manager comes in and says he wants to assess the squad then I'm going to flip. There is no assessment needed its clearly obvious who needs to go. Do Porto want 40m or pounds. If euros then it's 32m pound. About the same price as hazard. Come on Chelsea just bloody leave pep alone, we're going to waste the whole summer trying to get him for him to say no, in which time hazard has gone, hulk has gone, everyone else's has gone and then we sign another Liverpool reject.

@GabeU Van Gaal has said he is interested in day to day management position and not the DOF position. Roberto Martinez will likely get the job, but his success is not guaranteed there. Look at Roy Hodgson who could produce wonders with the Fulham's and co, but failed with Pool. Recruiting Van Gaal is not enough. To get back to where they were before will take time and money and money they have wasted. Apparently the new manager will have only 40mm in transfer money for the squad. Their flops will also be hard to sell since they are on high salaries and co.....Van Gaal is going to clash with Martinez or someone sooner or later, but definitely before his job is even half way done......

Has to be Pep or RDM. I can't see the point in going for anyone else. Pep seems to be showing Roman a bit of leg, I'm not sure if this is all just choreography and he actually accepted the job weeks ago, but it seems odd that he's now hinting that he only needs a short break. I'm still not sure the Barca style will work at Chelsea unless Roman is prepared to spend untold millions but as long as we remain in the top 4 it's worth a try. Don't want Harry under any circumstances, he'd try and persuade us that he'd "down great" because we'd finished "top half."

@rslack.Coming back to your question, the RB issue needs to be solved. We have been having problems in that area for a long time now. When we play the mid-table teams,we will have more possession and we will play more with the ball.Threfore,in going forward,we will probably need a RB who has pace, who can cross and is very very dangerous. As for the big games,we will play more off the ball.We will have to defend more(in the CL particularly).Ivanovic should be used at RB there. If the manager still wants us to play our new RB in the big games, then I think Ivanovic should play elsewhere because Ivanovic is one of the most important players against a top side like Didier Drogba.I don't know how much you will agree but his body language and fighting spirit are badly required when we play tough oppositions. The way he fights in the big games is just amazing.Hence,I would prefer him at RB.

@cfc250- A rotating RB plan based on the level of opposition sounds a little too much like an XBox strategy for me. If you stick Dani Alves at the back, we're not Barca against a mid-table side. Likewise, we are not one Philipp Lahm away from being Bayern. Early in the season AVB tried a strategy of pressing- all of the back line was pushing forward whenever possible. It wasn't just the forward skill of Ashley Cole that prevented the tactic from succeeding, the poor defensive cover cause the team to concede easy shots that lead to dropped points against opposition both high and low in the table. If your opinion is that possession against inferior competition is the source of dropped points, then there are plenty of solutions to the problem that need not include rotating attacking full backs into the squad on an irregular basis.

Judging by some of the stories recently, I think we're obviously waiting on a decision from Pep, it seems to me that despite RDM doing well in such a short space of time, the board feel that he is not the man to take Chelsea forward and have probably already got an agreement in principal in place for Pep to take over, the players we're being linked with are very much Pep's type of player quick, comfortable on the ball and interchangeable in their positions.. I would imagine we'll find out in the next week or so... We as a club, especially the board keep things in house - I also think that maybe Hazard is waiting to see if Pep takes over before committing to Chelsea and has probably been told in negotiations Pep will be in charge next season?.. Just a theory!

If there are less than 4 changes to the First Team, then it makes no sense to fire RDM. We will continue to play "long-ball" to whomever is at striker and hope he does something beneficial with the ball. The defence will be stout and the midfield will just be a conduit to getting the ball as far up the pitch as possible as quickly as possible without any idea who is up there or how many...or..they will back pass and let a defender kick the ball up for them. It worked against the Continental sides..but won't with any consistancy against the PL sides. Keep the basic team that finished the season with RDM as coach and we'll be staring 5-7th place in the EPL again and depend on a series of miracles to win the CL. Who is at the helm is far less important than who is on the pitch and for the weekly wages that Roman pays, he deserves far better than schoolboy "long-ball" tactics and 6th place in the PL.

@rslack-Roman wants us to play attacking football. We are not Barca against a mid-table side but we will be Barca against mid-table teams as per the owner. And I regret to say that our players were not pressing properly. Moreover, its difficult to play such a game when you have John Terry in your side.He does not have pace. For my life I don't know how he played such a game against Arsenal. My opinion is that waste of possession against inferior oppositions is the source of dropped points. The possession was being wasted. There was zero threat from our full-backs.Hence,I wanted a new RB and perhaps Ivanovic in the CL games and PL games against top sides where we will play off the ball a lot.If you could come up with better solutions than the rotating policy?I am afraid we will have to play the ugly way in the big games if we are to dig out results, that is more off the ball.In that case,Ivanovic is a must.

@cfc250- If the back line wasn't pressing properly, what makes you think that Terry and Ashley Cole are the problem? I would argue that Luiz isn't a disciplined enough defender to be asked to both defend and push up. He can do both, but doesn't seem to have the ability to do them simultaneously in an effective manner. Terry is a good option for the last line of defense in such a system, but I wouldn't argue that pressing is the best strategy for this Chelsea team. I am also hesitant to agree that possession is the reason for dropped points against inferior teams. I think that the current squad has a number of "big game" players, and the wasted chances during matches against inferior opposition is partly a symptom of this. In my opinion, a manager who can keep the teams focus on an upcoming match, as opposed to the next big match is part of the solution. Look at Mancini is you want a good example (or Jose for that matter). If Di Matteo can be criticized for anything, this is his primary weakness in my opinion. Secondly, we need consistency from those players who will dictate possession. Enigmatic performances make for a good narrative in big games, but they don't win the league. Is it a problem of personnel or mentality? I don't know. If Essien was the player of old we might be in a different position. I lauded the Ramires signing because I thought he possessed similar traits to the Bison in his prime. Mata need help in my opinion, and another player in this mould would be of great help in my opinion. I do think that the double pivot was employed with good results, and we need not sit back as much against lesser competition like we did in the latter stages of the Champions League. Di Matteo's former teams were criticized for playing a very attacking style without the talent to pull it off, so we know that he is capable of playing an attacking game. The ability to adjust tactics and squeeze out a result is just a credit to his tactical intelligence in my opinion.
