Torres Worries the French!

I have to say that the first two quarter-finals appear to be the appetizers ahead of the main course.

Although the first semi-final was entertaining, with Portugal squeezing past the Czech Republic, the second one (tonight) doesn`t fascinate me.

Germany should squeeze through against the plucky Greeks but the quarter-finals really ignite, for me, when Spain play Francey (on Saturday) and England take on Italy (on Sunday).

We`ll focus on the latter quarter-final from tomorrow onwards and discuss the Chelsea implications, but first, as the excitement builds relating to France trying to knockout the reigning World and European champions, our very own Florent Malouda has given a few quotes to the press about our very own Fernando Torres.

Reading between the lines, it looks as if the French are a little wary of our £50 million striker with Malouda commenting to the media,

"Fernando finished the season strongly with great determination."

"He has a lot of desire to show he is still one of the best strikers."

"The Euros are a perfect showcase for him to prove this and return to Chelsea an even stronger player."

"It will be very difficult for us because in Fernando we meet a player who has won the previous European Championship and World Cup."

"He can score two or three goals and makes great runs."

"Fernando will be a true menace - we must make sure he does not shine."

Although there`s still some way to go before the game kicks off, can anyone see a result other than a, comprehensive Spanish win?

Nino is'nt a Gomez or a messi or a villa who will score 30-40 goals(but i hope he does) a season he'l get around about 20-25 but those will be agaisnt the likes of Urinated cciteh arse-nal etc n ones you'l repeatedly watch he is a big match player(like DD) n makes likes of vidic ***** in their pants every time they face off.!!!n he is a creative striker with flair n style.! unlike typical gomez's villa's who just want to score he is an assist machine for his psoition

n now dont say that i am from the "toress bandwagon" but i think if we dont sign a new striker n give lad the backing as well as the responsibilty to get us goals i think he mite n after RDM took over nando has picked up n now with the line of attackers behind him i wouldnt be surprised to see him score for fun lets keep our dissappointment desparation sadness anger about nando n lets just back n believe in day when people will talk about nando they should say that chelsea great once also played for liverpool n not the other way round as they say now

I love those words, he is only trying to make Torres more confident in himself and this will force Del Bosque to start Torres instead of the 'false 9' Cesc.

But i want France to destroy Spain, as i think Spain are weak, they only have one player with real drive and dribbling ability in Iniesta, the rest are just passers of the ball that want to play Tiki-Taka into the opposition net. They play as if there is no CF, they forget about Torres when he is on the pitch, Iniesta,Xavi and Silva prefer the pass among themselves till they find space to shoot. Torres keeps creating space and making wonderful runs but they leave him isolated. Their goal against Croatia was an offside and handball, Croatia had 2 great oppurtunities to destroy them but Casillas saved them. Italy should have scored more than one goal but Ballotelli and Cassano missed. Their defence is weak tbh. I want Ribery,Benzema,Nasri and Cabaye to run rings around them and destroy them. Hope he starts with Cesc again as false 9, so when France destroy them, pressure will not be on Torres but it will be on Del Bosque and his false 9 system.

Torres can make the difference, but implying that he'll score 2-3 might not be possible with that leg kicking french defence

Calling Torres an assist machine is a stretch.

@stamfordbridge5 if getting close to 20 assists in one season for a CF is not machine enough, i wonder what it is.

Malouda can be used as a gift for whoever buys Sturridge. Get Hulk and Jovetic then we don't have to watch an idiot shooting from every angle

SameX... Torres had 12 assists. That is not close to 20. It's also the most assists he's ever had in a season. In order to be an "assist machine", you should be consistent over multiple seasons.

I have a problem with that. ESPN has him at 12. Depends on what you classify as an assist. A shot that is rebounded off the post is not an assist to me.

Here is the italicized bit under the assist label: "Assists are judged not for the last touch but by the subjective view of the statistician for a crucial part played in the goal."

He had 12 ASSISTS (the final pass to the goal scorer), he ASSISTED in 18 goals. IMO, not the same, but 18 looks more glamorous than 12 I suppose.

If the shot was not played well and with intensity there will be no rebounce for the goal, so it is a crucial part played that resulted to the goal.

@Samex 'you think Spain are weak'? Then what do you say about the French if Spain is weak. The French look too ordinary one of their worst collection of players for a while. Guess Spain will just take them to the cleaners.

By giving Torres an assist for a rebounded goal is absurd. That implies he deliberately "banked" the ball off of the goal post into the path of a teammate. If he meant to do that, he'd be one hell of a mini-golf player.

Suppose it's all how your interpret it. I grew up with basketball. In basketball you don't give someone an assist if their missed shot turns into an offensive rebound and a basket by a teammate. Unfortunately there is no uniformity when it comes to labeling an assist in football.

I don't want to us to buy another striker. Wish the Hulk deal would go through though it seems highly unlikely, because getting hulk will be like getting 2 players at the price of 1. He can play as an inverted winger & as well striker who is also strong enough to play the target man role should the need arise. But I definitely wouldn't want to be held ransom by Porto over his price.

all the pro-hulk guys just give me one occasion of him against premier league club where he has sparkled and raped defences i am not against it i luv him but i dont think he is worth 30m we shouldnt spend apenny more than 25m we should rahter give piazon kakuta a chance to shine..!!!!!

now compare mata with silva mata won UCL fa cup silva oly PL mata got more than 20 assists more than silva mata is younger quiker trickier than silva IMO n we were weaker than citeh last term so i think MATA should start and that silva doesnt pass the ball more often to nando it irritates me but even wen iniesta xavi silva dont pass nando still got 2 goals

its gonna be really close game because France have good and experience team. Torres has to work even harder than he did against Croatia. France will not let him to make those runs because they have really strong defense. I hope his gonna score !!

@yash_blue Mata is not better than Silva, Mata is more tricky than Silva but Silva is more creative, skillful and mobile, both are not fast players, but i think Silva is Faster. Mata knows how to keep the ball than Silva but Silva combines better with his team mates especially Iniesta and Xavi. Btw, Silva is about 27, he is much more experienced. Mata is still relatively young he will be the Future Iniesta and Silva for Spain.

But Mata is very close to Silva level and when he gets to 26 he will be far better than the present Silva.

@Sojof Spain are not as strong as they used to be especially in attack, they just keep doing tiki taka in midfield but are not that fluent in the final third like Germany. The coach is not good enough and is lacking in terms of his combinations. Ramos and Pique have a poor understanding, Italy and Croatia exposed them a bit, Arbeloa looses the ball every now and then. If Ribery-Nasri-Benzema trio put in better performances they will destroy Spain. Cabaye-M'villa and Diarra should be in midfield and stiffen the Spanish midfield

@SameX Cabaye, M'villa, Diara against a midfield of Busquet, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Silva and you feel they will match up? U must be joking those french guys are too ordinary and average they won't be able to cope.
