The First to Do So!

It`s something I`ve harped on about before but something I`ll continue to harp on about until the deed is done.

Having tugged his fore-lock and offered the required apology to David Bernstein, Ashley Cole looks set to pick up cap number 99 against San Marino on Friday evening, meaning that barring injury, Cole will reach the historic milestone of 100 caps against Poland, although we should point out that we`ve been down this route before.

But although Cole will (hopefully) be joining an exclusive club he does so on extraordinary grounds. Ashley will become that rarity that has not only reached 100 caps but will also have started all those 100 games.

Last night, as the row rumbled on and the hacks tried to generate more dirt, the subject of captaining the side on this historic occasion was broached. It was inferred by some that Ashley, following recent events, will not be awarded the captaincy, thereby becoming the first England player to reach 100 caps without captaining the side.

Personally, with Ashley never seeming to want to take the armband and the ensuing responsibility that comes with it, I'd imagine that suits him down to the ground!

I'm sure Ashley won't mind. But respect must surely work both ways. Ash has committed over a decade to England and has been exceptional throughout. He's always remained available, and has always been the first name on the team sheet. If the FA don't want to offer him the captaincy then that would be a poor display of disloyalty and a lack of respect for someone who has been England's most consistent and possibly best player over the last 10 or so years.

It would not surprise me if the FA take this stance just to spite Ashley and Chelsea FC. If they do it is in their prerogative and sadly Ash would have given them the license to justify it given his ill advised twitter out burst.. He and us will just have to move on if that is the case.

@Mq What with this your cashley this cashley that, Ain't the boy performing well for us or you forget he is not the first player to leave arsenal and not the last player. Tell me, if you are a footballer, you will stay at a club where you have little chance of winning trophy if you have chance of moving to a club will you have real chance of winning trophy and get more money. You lot criticize footballers when you will hardly better than them.

To get players that have been capped for a 100 games for their countries is a rarity and I admire the few that have achieved it. When ashley gets to his 100th cap the FA should consider leighton baines for a few games, the man is in form and a worthy player for england, I hope betrand can be as good as ashley, but I doubt it
