Why So Many Failures?

Why So Many Failures?

My thoughts on why so many world class strikers, except Drogba, have failed since Roman took over?

This is something I have been struggling to find an answer for. It's very difficult for a very good talented player to turn to a very bad player in so short a period of time.

The list of strikers who were very prolific before coming to Chelsea and really never made a strong impact while at Chelsea is worrying.

Mateja Kezman was the top scorer in the Dutch league for few seasons before moving to Chelsea but never really got going or was never given the chance.

Hernan Crespo was a very talented striker, everyone was talking of how good he was until he came to Chelsea, he did set the Bridge alight with his goals like he did in Italy.

The Claudio Pizzarro story was not different from the above two strikers. He has since moved on and again is banging in goals for fun in the Bundesliga and Champions League and even keeping the great Gomes from getting games time.

Andriy Schevchenko was the most difficult for me to believe. He is the third-highest goal-scorer in Champions League history, the second most prolific player in the history of the AC Milan and won the Ballon d'Or in 2004, one of two Ballon d'Or winners to ever play in the Premier League.

The list goes on. But he too failed to come to his best during his stay in Chelsea and eventually moved on.

Now with Torres it's becoming the same sad story with all the above players.

My conclusion is the Chelsea has really never adapted their play to suit any of the forwards.

Drogba was largely successful because we adapted our style of play to suit him. Imagine Drogba at Barcelona. Everyone following the Premier League knows Torres strength, pace and good timing in running behind defenders.

Our creative players are not picking it out. I could see the frustration in his eyes whenever his is looking to run into a space, the ball is either play sideways or short instead. His form crisis started when Benitez left Liverpool. He understood his style and strength and Liverpool under his watch utilized that.

This brought me to Sir Alex post-match comment after they lost to Everton.

'We were not given Van Persie the ball enough and he was going to work on it'

and the result of that is there for everyone to see.

This what I am expecting RDM to do as well.

Another Striker Falcao or Neymar won't solve that problem, it is up to our midfielders with the help of the coach to lay more emphasis on utilizing his strength.

Pizzaro isnt keeping gomez on the bench, he is injured.Of all the strikers you have mentioned they did reach their peak and then came to chelsea where it was all landslide for them. Drogba was successfull coz he worked hard, didnt have that superstar tag on him

We Always been jinxed with strikers even befor Roman came on board, Remember Robert Fleck and Steve Sutton,
16/11/2012 13:28:00
Sheva "failed" because he came to us when he was old and Mourinho already had Drogba so he was always out of position.

Its everyones mistake but not torres' right.??? these are lame excuses mata tries to give the ball to him whenever possible, he gets the ball many times but what does he do with it.??? they might have missed a few runs but how many 1 on 1's has torres flufed this season.? torres losses ball almost everytime he gets it he couldnt even get past caragher....stop neglecting the facts
16/11/2012 13:39:00
We have created more than enough chances for the Torr-Mented1 to score butf he needs 3 chances to score 1 goal then it's not RDM's fault. As for his seeming 'frustration' at not getting the chances when he wants them, it comes with time and he has to work so hard the other players see that. It's pointless him choosing when to make the runs and when not to, recall Mata's missed chance when he could've passed Hazard, where was Torr-Mented1 then?? Halfway line jogging, talk about desire

the problem with all those strikers were they suited to playing free flowing football and we played different style which never suited their style at all...

Torres was already finished when we signed him. He hardly featured for spain and wasnt scoring for Luispool in his final year there. Roman was just too blind to see differently.

There are no other top teams in EPL (Arsenal not included) that have so much failed strikers like us, my guess is something is wrong untill that is fix Facao or Neymar will struggle. @Mq, I still think will are not playing to his strength. with that Mata missed chance he was truely far from the action, would Mata have passed to him no but Hazard would have. so that is were I think the coach need to preach to this guys. They are all talented but putting the team 1st should be more important that individual goals.

Everyone seems to forget Nicolas Anelka when comparing Roman's strikers. He was absolutely deadly for us and his record backs it up.

I remember a particular game where Torres was offered the rare opportunity to score a goal from the spot, he refused to accept the humble gesture from Mata and that was a match Chelsea was already in a winning position with 2 goals advantage(if I'm correct), what sort striker does that? Here you are, defending him with that now outdated excuse 'he's not getting enough service from the midfielders'. The lad has lost his mojo, he's no more a deadly striker, a top striker should be able to contrive a goal scoring opportunity on his own, how many times has he done that in his 57 appearances for Chelsea ?
16/11/2012 15:50:00
Torres is playing with the most creative and dynamic midfielders we ve had in recent times, yet he has the lowest goal per game ratio among the other strikers, regularly benched Sturridge included.
16/11/2012 16:20:00
@raybell y wd he want to take a penalty? a cheap goal like that wont bosst his confidence. anyways how many penalties has he taken in his career? 3.4? hes nvr takin penalties before so y take them now
16/11/2012 17:04:00
sheva failed because he was too old and drogba was on form throughout the season. how did crespo fail when he only played like 2 seasons in which he gt like 20+ goals. pizzaro was a squad player that ddnt work
16/11/2012 17:07:00
pizzaro isnt benching gomez. hes being benched my mandzukic who when gomez comes bak will also be benched. lewandowski for 12m is our best bet falcao for 50m is nnt worth it
16/11/2012 17:08:00
@Humza_96, 'why would he want to take a penalty?' .. Because goal hungry players like to score goals wether it is a penalty kick, free kick or just 'tap ins', not to mention a player that has dearth of goals weighing him down, why do you think Drogba and Lampard had tussles about who would take a peno in some games?

VC? wen will this torres argument stop? i am just tired of this, uncle merlin please dont accept torres articles again, unless in january, because in that time we can offload him, but now there is nothing we can do.
16/11/2012 18:44:00
If I count, the one on one chances Torres has missed in Chelsea should be more than the goals he scored. And for goodness sake how df can some one score when he is afraid of taking shots. Even Mikel as bad he is with shots and all the criticism he faces is more eager than Torres to take shots.
