My thoughts on why so many world class strikers, except Drogba, have failed since Roman took over?
This is something I have been struggling to find an answer for. It's very difficult for a very good talented player to turn to a very bad player in so short a period of time.
The list of strikers who were very prolific before coming to Chelsea and really never made a strong impact while at Chelsea is worrying.
Mateja Kezman was the top scorer in the Dutch league for few seasons before moving to Chelsea but never really got going or was never given the chance.
Hernan Crespo was a very talented striker, everyone was talking of how good he was until he came to Chelsea, he did set the Bridge alight with his goals like he did in Italy.
The Claudio Pizzarro story was not different from the above two strikers. He has since moved on and again is banging in goals for fun in the Bundesliga and Champions League and even keeping the great Gomes from getting games time.
Andriy Schevchenko was the most difficult for me to believe. He is the third-highest goal-scorer in Champions League history, the second most prolific player in the history of the AC Milan and won the Ballon d'Or in 2004, one of two Ballon d'Or winners to ever play in the Premier League.
The list goes on. But he too failed to come to his best during his stay in Chelsea and eventually moved on.
Now with Torres it's becoming the same sad story with all the above players.
My conclusion is the Chelsea has really never adapted their play to suit any of the forwards.
Drogba was largely successful because we adapted our style of play to suit him. Imagine Drogba at Barcelona. Everyone following the Premier League knows Torres strength, pace and good timing in running behind defenders.
Our creative players are not picking it out. I could see the frustration in his eyes whenever his is looking to run into a space, the ball is either play sideways or short instead. His form crisis started when Benitez left Liverpool. He understood his style and strength and Liverpool under his watch utilized that.
This brought me to Sir Alex post-match comment after they lost to Everton.
'We were not given Van Persie the ball enough and he was going to work on it'
and the result of that is there for everyone to see.
This what I am expecting RDM to do as well.
Another Striker Falcao or Neymar won't solve that problem, it is up to our midfielders with the help of the coach to lay more emphasis on utilizing his strength.
