West Brom 2 Chelsea 1

West Brom 2 Chelsea 1

Steve Clarke had the last laugh this afternoon as Chelsea`s recent record, in the Premier League, saw them fail to win in four attempts, as the recent blip continued.

Team News - Roberto Di Matteo, perhaps with the trip to Juventus, in midweek, in mind made five changes for the trip to the Hawthorns. Out of the line up from that which started against Liverpool were Ivanovic, Terry, Ramires, Mata and Oscar with Luiz, Cahill, Romeu, Moses and Sturridge coming in.

Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Bertrand, Romeu, Mikel, Hazard, Sturridge, Torres, Moses.

Subs: Turnbull, Ivanovic, Cole, Ramires, Mata, Oscar, Marin.

First Half - Chelsea almost took an early lead when Ridgewell cleared off the line after good work from Sturridge and Moses saw Bertrand try his luck from a central position in the penalty area.

But Chelsea were to fall behind shortly after, courtesy of a counter-attack, when Gera and Morrison combined for Shane Long, who had lost Luiz, to head home with ten minutes on the clock.

With twenty minutes gone perhaps the best summing up of how things were going was that Boaz Myhill, in the West Brom goal, had yet to be called into action. Chelsea were trying to push up but West Brom were only too willing to look for that counter-attacking opportunity.

Myhill finally got tested with a long range shot from Sturridge before Long cut inside Cahill and shot past the post. But against the run of play Chelsea got an equalizer, in the 39th minute, when a cross from Azpilicueta saw a header from Eden Hazard deflect off of Jones to beat Myhill.

Half Time - West Brom 1 Chelsea 1

Second Half - Neither side made any changes during the break and Chelsea started the second half well with Sturridge forcing a save from Myhill. But it was to be our hosts who were to take the lead when Peter Odemwingie headed home a cross from Long, in the 50th minute.

Chelsea responded well to going behind and Olsson had to do well to prevent a second equalizer going in. Di Matteo introduced Oscar and Mata, withdrawing Torres and Romeu, to try and salvage something from the game.

Myhill, following a great ball from Mata, produced good save from Sturridge as Mata began to pull the strings. A shout for a penalty, after a shove on Moses by Yacob, was turned down. Yacob then saw a long range shot almost deceive Cech as West Brom once again threatened on the counter-attack.

Sturridge looked odds-on to score, after a ball from Mata, but his low shot was saved by Myhill. A great touch from Oscar saw Sturridge hit his shot across the goal as time began to run out.

With four minutes of stoppage time announced Chelsea continued to pour forward but West Brom`s resistance was not to be broken and three more points were lost.

With Torres we have a selfless player who can never get in good positions. With Sturridge we have a selfish striker who always gets in good positions. The truth is neither of them are good enough. I'd take Kalou back in a heartbeat. Verdict: We absolutely need a new striker.

RDM simply under-rated them and he paid for it big time.He should be reminded that Mr.Roman is not that patient

Absolutely need a finisher!!! This is exactly why Studge doesn't start... he is not much better then Torres. He makes those runs that Torres doesn't any more, but he doesn't finish them off with all the chances that he gets.

Didnt watch the match but man we are litterally *****ing away our title chances. Dissapointing. Keeping hope of the title would make for an entertaining season. Guess its going to be managerial merry go round as rdm will be sacked. Im going to blame lack of strikers. Too bad torres is killing our clubs chances. Beginning to think hes a cancer that will continue to pull us down. We need to cut him out

Further proof once again why we need a new striker our finishing once again like in the last game lets us down. What did Ron Gourlay say after Drogba left we have Fernando Torres who will score lots of goals not today. Also I don't get why we didn't play Marin in this match.

So RDM still believe he can win the Ucl and get automatic qualification like last season or what? This was how it all began last season and we still think is gonna happen as it was last season? Why can't we go through wesbrom before we think about juve? Am afraid!

Our problem is the defense. I am beginning to doubt Luiz's ability to play in Chelsea

Ive been callin gfor Studge to start all season long...and today shows why. Does anyone else want to try and justify why Torres should start ahead of him anymore, be my guest!

I have a feeling that Santa is going to be good to us this year, and will bring us a very expensive gift. Here's a hint: He's Columbian...

RDM was not at fault here guys. I don't understand what else you want from him. The players are tired from the International break and then we have a great match mid-week against Juve. We are creating chances and midfield is doing well. what we lacked is defensive discipline. Luiz is not that guy for us at the defense. I am so frustrated these days watching him play. Marin should also be given some chances but then, RDM sees him week in, week out in training. He probably has his reasons

Petr Cech almost managed to do what Torres failed to do the entire time he was on the pitch - score a goal!

On a postive note: Azpilicueta was magnificent today. Looks very solid defensively and can cross with both feet. Also, Chalobah is progressing nicely at Watford, and can hopefully develop into the player Mikel couldn't. otherwise it was the same old, really. opposite team scores when oppurtunities are given, while we miss one sitter after another. I was impressed with Sturridges's movement though. Definitely thinks he merits a starting spot against Juve.

I wont blame RDM much for this one, he tried to rest players and made his subs early, i was happy he took Torres off too. He shouldnt have start both Romeu and Mikel in the pivot both players are like six and half a dozen, if he must start Torres i would have love to see him playing behind Sturridge instead of other way round.

We are so afraid to take a gamble and we will conyinue to pay the price. Our two strikers have failed, take a gamble on Islam Feruz and keep these mediocre and mouth-making strikers on the bench.

I know Danny's qualities and i say this time and time agian...he is a great striker and can be world class if given the opportunity. Today he was rusty because he hasn't played enough games but if he had 3-4 90mins under his belt I am convinced he would have scored a hatrick today.

I don't think sacking RDM will solve anything here. And I sincerely hope the board will be sensible enough to see that. If any of this does go back to RDM it is why he wouldn't get another striker in the summer. Counting the cost of that very dear mistake is nowhere near to being over yet. But for now, Sturridge is definitely the one to start.
