Steve Clarke had the last laugh this afternoon as Chelsea`s recent record, in the Premier League, saw them fail to win in four attempts, as the recent blip continued.
Team News - Roberto Di Matteo, perhaps with the trip to Juventus, in midweek, in mind made five changes for the trip to the Hawthorns. Out of the line up from that which started against Liverpool were Ivanovic, Terry, Ramires, Mata and Oscar with Luiz, Cahill, Romeu, Moses and Sturridge coming in.
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Luiz, Bertrand, Romeu, Mikel, Hazard, Sturridge, Torres, Moses.
Subs: Turnbull, Ivanovic, Cole, Ramires, Mata, Oscar, Marin.
First Half - Chelsea almost took an early lead when Ridgewell cleared off the line after good work from Sturridge and Moses saw Bertrand try his luck from a central position in the penalty area.
But Chelsea were to fall behind shortly after, courtesy of a counter-attack, when Gera and Morrison combined for Shane Long, who had lost Luiz, to head home with ten minutes on the clock.
With twenty minutes gone perhaps the best summing up of how things were going was that Boaz Myhill, in the West Brom goal, had yet to be called into action. Chelsea were trying to push up but West Brom were only too willing to look for that counter-attacking opportunity.
Myhill finally got tested with a long range shot from Sturridge before Long cut inside Cahill and shot past the post. But against the run of play Chelsea got an equalizer, in the 39th minute, when a cross from Azpilicueta saw a header from Eden Hazard deflect off of Jones to beat Myhill.
Half Time - West Brom 1 Chelsea 1
Second Half - Neither side made any changes during the break and Chelsea started the second half well with Sturridge forcing a save from Myhill. But it was to be our hosts who were to take the lead when Peter Odemwingie headed home a cross from Long, in the 50th minute.
Chelsea responded well to going behind and Olsson had to do well to prevent a second equalizer going in. Di Matteo introduced Oscar and Mata, withdrawing Torres and Romeu, to try and salvage something from the game.
Myhill, following a great ball from Mata, produced good save from Sturridge as Mata began to pull the strings. A shout for a penalty, after a shove on Moses by Yacob, was turned down. Yacob then saw a long range shot almost deceive Cech as West Brom once again threatened on the counter-attack.
Sturridge looked odds-on to score, after a ball from Mata, but his low shot was saved by Myhill. A great touch from Oscar saw Sturridge hit his shot across the goal as time began to run out.
With four minutes of stoppage time announced Chelsea continued to pour forward but West Brom`s resistance was not to be broken and three more points were lost.
