5 games...it`s been 5 games since we Chelsea fans have experienced the joy of victory.
The last time I've written an article on Vital Chelsea must have been before the sacking of AVB but after yesterday's dejected performance I felt the need to rant on once again!
I started supporting Chelsea in the 03/04 season and I've noticed a pattern that everyone else has probably noticed as well: we are absolutely woeful in the winter!
My point in this article is not to reprimand RDM like many of us (including myself) have done with the last eight managers when struggling during this period. I am here to discuss something far more bizarre.
It has always alluded me as to how Manchester United, Arsenal, etc rarely seem to endure this dip in form whereas we almost always go through it. If you have not noticed yet, this time of the year has become progressively worse season by season.
In our first title winning campaign we barely struggled, next season we somewhat did. And the pattern just goes on until now. Roman Abramovich has resorted to continuously sacking managers at around February time to much ridicule from the fans and media alike.
Our list of managers are incredible, all world renowned and we've always found ourselves with an outstanding group of players who are capable of incredible things but for some strange reason, we always have this blip every year, I guarantee that we would have won the league in 08/09 and 10/11 if this didn't happen.
Now I'd like to throw one crazy idea out there: Its fair to say that this era of glory and trophy's began in 2004 with Jose Mourinho, he was the man who began it all. Even though only a few remain from his time in charge, you can still say that Chelsea's brand and style of football is still of Mourinho's philosophy.
He was the man who set the foundation for this football club and set the standards of what the board and the fans should expect from the team. Now, in my opinion, it`s this same style of football that has made the winter period such a torrid time for Chelsea over the last few seasons and that the only real way that we can prevent this from happening season after season is to stop this philosophy.
We have tried countless managers as I've said above to try and change Chelsea but none have succeeded completely. We have won a Premier League, 3 FA Cups and a UCL title but no manager has been able to make his job secure.
I think that the only man who is capable of changing Chelsea and that same style from 2004 is the man himself Jose Mourinho. I know many of you are opposed to the idea of Mourinho returning but I think that he is the only person that can send us on the right track once again.
Now, this is not to say we must revolve in this same cycle but this is to say that Mourinho can establish a side that can adapt and re adapt to different style of play and then this will be the boost that Chelsea will need in the future. I, like all of you love the way in which we played in 2004 and how we went about or club but of course time changes and so must the Football Club.
On that note I will leave you with a quote from Thomas Jefferson:
'Laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.' - Thomas Jefferson
