Maybe Rafa is the Right Choice?

Maybe Rafa is the Right Choice?

Ok, ok, so I know lots of people here don't want Rafa as our 'interim' manager. But, let's face the face, he is. Want him or not, it's irrelevant, because we don't decide these things. But, everyone is entitled to an opinion, so you're welcome to vent your anger at this appointment - that's why this site is here.

RDM was clearly not the man for the job long term. The board took a fair while to appoint him, and even then, he was only given a two year contract. Yes, I will never forget what he did for us - I was there in Munich - but RDM's experience and his tactical abilities were only going to get us so far.

When anyone is appointed a new manager, there is usually a lift in results as players tend to get motivated by the new appointment and they play better to impress the new man. That happened when RDM took over and, of course, we won the CL. No one can deny the gods were smiling in our favour towards the end of last season either, so RDM did bring a certain element of luck with him as well.

But, should we congratulate the board for acting now, as opposed to later in the season when results continued to deteriorate? Looked what happened last year - it all started well, and then went rapidly downhill. It seems to be happening again, at roughly the same time, and with RDM's limited experience, maybe the board have done the right thing in acting now to prevent it all getting worse.

So what about Rafa? Yes, he said we lack passion. Many Chelsea fans will never back him purely for that comment. But at the time, he was employed by Liverpool and Chelsea were the enemy. It's just a job - he was doing and saying the right thing to help Liverpool Football Club and their fans. It's just words, mind games - Old Red Nose is the master of this.

'Rafa Benítez has been the most important coach in my career. He has been the only one who knew how to help me improve. His priority is the team but he adapts the conditions to make everyone fit in the team. That's his secret. He taught me a lot and thanks to him I matured as a professional.'

These are the words of Fernando Torres, a man Benitez plucked from Atlético Madrid for a little more than £20m in July 2007. Benitez turned him into one of the world's most feared centre-forwards. I don't need to remind you that same centre forward plays for us, and if anyone can get the best out of Torres, it is our new interim manager.

That having been said, it would be slightly ambitious to believe that Benitez can get the same out of Torres now than what he did at Liverpool, but after spending £50m in luring Torres to Chelsea, and no one can deny that given his ability Torres could still deliver for us, don't you think Roman Abramovich has the right to roll the dice one more time and try? It's his club, his money, if he wants to try to bring in Rafa to get Torres back to his best, then who's to argue?

I, for one, will be very happy if Torres finds the same form for Chelsea as he did for Liverpool. And there won't be one genuine Chelsea fan who disagrees with me. Torres banging them in left right and centre for Chelsea would be a lovely sight.

As any Liverpool or Valencia supporter will happily point out, Benítez's skills stretch far beyond his ability to get the best out of Torres. Rafa Benitez is a man who over nine years won the Uefa Cup, two La Liga titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup. He also came within four points of winning the Premier League. For those of you wanting Harry or Avram - can we say the same about them? No, clearly, Rafa is a good manager with vast experience. We're in the sh*t, we need someone with experience to help us. Not many managers available who have the same resume as Benitez!!

Transfers? Oh yeah, and people are also raving on about how poor Benitez is in the transfer market. Well, you seem to also conveniently forget the successes. He bought top class players such as Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres. Get your blinkers off lads, Rafa isn't that bad. Quite the opposite in fact.

So before you all get on your high horses and slam Benitez before he's even set foot on the training ground, just take a note of the above will you. We're in the crap, we've got a man with an impressive resume, vast experience, he's willing to join only until the end of the season, he knows the Premiership inside out, he knows Torres like no one else, the board have acted at a time when things can be fixed (eg the league), and more importantly, let's give the man a chance before you all turn on him.

i concur.
21/11/2012 21:52:00
yea but sacking avb and getting rdm in march won us the CL/FA cup. hiddink in feb would have won the CL/FA cup double if it werent 4 that prik ovrebo. avram grant gt knocked out of 2 finals unluckily and was lvl on points wiv manu until the 38th game. history shows our interims do well
21/11/2012 21:52:00
with the article, not the guy saying 'no'.
21/11/2012 21:52:00
Oh and Fernando Torres can ****k off. He's actually making Shevchenko look good. Shevchenko was 30 when he signed for us, and he was still faster, and more technical than Torres.
21/11/2012 21:54:00
Rafa the right choice? please
21/11/2012 21:56:00
I fully support the authors' opinion....Robbie has done his shift...i feel rafa will do well given his tactical acumen...pls let us give him time to work with the team. Robbie was out of his depth tactically...its sad but true and players are no slouches they can tell when the coach is not up to scratch! After the 4-1 rout by athletico, the 2-2 draw with juventus, the writing was on the wall
21/11/2012 21:56:00
feck torres and feck the fat waiter well not happy
21/11/2012 21:57:00
nice article u said it all thanks
21/11/2012 21:57:00
you make great points , rafa might not be my first choice interim but i dont hate him , i honestly dont give a s*** about what he said about our passion , why should we care ha , anyways torres has little over a month to make an impact , if he scores 5-8 goals by the end of december ill jump with joy , same if we regain 1st position and smash the citizens , I hope the fans dont boo him , that affects the entire team , i hope for the best for cfc.
21/11/2012 21:57:00
I am sorry that this is happening. Roman gets Rafa to help Torres regain his form? I have been supportive of every manager in the Roman era (well maybe not Phil), but I am not supportive of Rafa Benitez.
21/11/2012 21:58:00
and to the people slamming him , hes not even in cobham yet you fools , give him time , thats all we can do , just jumped with joy to see the citizens out:)
21/11/2012 21:59:00
You don't get it do you? Benitez has always shown contempt for our club, our fans, and our legendary manager. Now he's sucking russian dick to get a chance to manage our club. He's a feckin fat whore who only cares about publicity and the money. We let a great manager go, who cares about this club, to be replaced by this fat piece of *****.
21/11/2012 22:03:00
Good article and points noted - Still not happy we have the fat waiter over RDM. Fat waiter is the oppisite in tactics to what Roman wants too. Surely RDM deserved more time given what he was able to do last season and the beginning of this season. I would have thought at least the Man City game at least.
21/11/2012 22:08:00
agree weather we like him or not benitez is a pretty decent coach i am not happy about the treatment of rdm but what can you do if benitez brings sucess we will get over it so might as well just get behind rafa
21/11/2012 22:08:00
Rafa is our manager now..that is the reality. What i think about it is irrelevant really. The bigger problem however is that his appointment is interim....that troublesome word again. What that means is that the board really did not want him either..we all know who they want. Rafa must really be desperate now to accept an interim position from anyone..We tried this with Capello after the AVB sacking and Capello told Roman of for even daring to think he would accept an interim position. An interim tag means what we have is a glorified "hired gun". The board has shown him no commitment and trust and you can be certain that will demonstrated in how affairs are handled in the January transfer window and how Rafa himself handles things. This is a marriage of convinience by both parties with both having ulterior motives. It is akin to those celebrity trophy weddings where both parties have lengthy pre nups signed- love is the last thing on the couples's minds in those unions. Anyone knows that there is big difference between the mindsets of a temp and a full time employee. The players will see and know this. Rafa accepted this because he hasnt had a job in ~ 2yrs now and is desperate to get back in the coaching world. Chelsea is a stepping stone for him to get the permanent job he seeks elsewhere. The board got him to mark time till they can get Pep in the summer. Questions to be asked; What happens come Summer when Pep decides to pick someone else? Will Rafa even last that long if the result go plummeting? What happens if we cannot secure a top 4 finish by seasons end? Who is plan C for us when Pep goes elsewhere and Rafa walks out on us at seasons end having secured a permanent deal elsewhere? There will certainly be no dull moment here at Chelsea FC for the rest of this season. The soap opera begins when we take on city this weekend.
21/11/2012 22:11:00
Bring out the best in Torres? What of the other players, We need a coach to bring out the best out of all our player. Torres can't win us anything alone
21/11/2012 22:11:00
This sacking is a disgrace. We aren't even out of the UCL yet.. We lost to United we all know how, Swansea tied at the 88th minute, we had infinite chances vs liverpool, and we played bad vs westbrom and juventus. Is that all we need to fire a manager? And to replace him with Rafa Benitez on top of it?? I would accept this if Guardiola or Mourinho took charge but not for Benitez for *****s sake...
21/11/2012 22:12:00
"He bought top class players such as Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres." That's 7 players in his how many reigns as Liverpool manager? Andrea Dossena, Robbie Keane, Riera, David N;Gog, Babel, Aquilani? Don't get me wrong, he signs world class players, but flops as well. I hope he is still interest in Stefan Jovetic as he was at Pool before he left before Torres will fail him. If you are also using the same Fernando Torres quotes as support for him, may I remind you about this from the same Torres and Gerrard: "Steven Gerrard, having produced a performance in an FA Cup final comparable to Stanley Matthews, joked that he still failed to get a 'well done' from Benitez. Fernando Torres wrote that a day after the birth of his first daughter he received belated congratulations from Benitez, only to realise the praise was for attacking the post at a corner rather than for his new fatherhood." For the Alonso he signed, see what Rafa said about him in public in this link: ALSO See from the horses mouth why he left Liverpool:
