And so here we are, the pinnacle of club football is waiting to be climbed.
Can we become Club Champions of the World as well as being the current Champions of Europe? Well we`re about to find out as we get set to take on the Brazilian side, Corinthians, in Japan.
It`s looking very much as if we`ll be the away side, with some 20,000 Brazilians inside the stadium, but wasn`t if just like that over in Munich?
Having inherited the job from Roberto Di Matteo, Rafa Benitez stands on the brink of another World Club Cup triumph, having already claimed the trophy with Inter Milan.
If Rafa is to mastermind a Chelsea victory then he`ll be hoping that the considerable talents possessed by Juan Mata will play their part. The Spaniard has been superb this season and it was his goal, against Monterrey, that opened the floodgates for our semi-final victory.
Ahead of the clash in Yokohmo, Juan had this to say about the Monterrey game, the forthcoming fixture against Corinthians and the kind of football Benitez wants the side to play, remarking t the media,
"We`re trying to come back to where we were a couple of months ago, to play in a good way."
"The best way to win is with the ball and that is what we are looking to do now. We showed that against Monterrey."
"There was an intensity and confidence about our game. We knew that we had to start really well if we wanted to win. After we got the first goal we were able to play with more confidence and in the second half we started even better. Now we must look to improve again."
"That was the sort of football the manager has told us he wants to see, wants us to play. But we haven`t completed the job."
"Having come out here, so far, we are only halfway. We came out here to win this tournament and we want to be World Club Champions."
"Against Corinthians the main point will be whether we can keep the ball or not. We know they are a team who like to play with the ball - a typical Brazilian team. But we have players as well who want to play that way."
"We want to have the ball, to make passes, create chances and assists. It`s going to be tough. Hopefully we can win."
Hopefully we can and with the game starting at 10:30am UK time, this Sunday morning, we`ll soon find out if Rafa the Gaffer will get his hands on a first trophy with Chelsea.
Come on you boys in blue!
