Chelsea 8 Aston Villa 0

What an early Christmas present that was!

Team News - Rafa Benitez chose to make three changes from the starting eleven that won at Elland Road in midweek. Bertrand was replaced by Cole, Cahill coming back after suspension with Luiz moving into defensive midfield in place of Ramires and Hazard coming back in place of Oscar. In midfield, Frank Lampard was making his 500th Premier League appearance.

First Half - Chelsea got the action underway and were to romp to a 3-0 half time lead. The first goal came as early as the 3rd minute when an excellent ball in, from Azpilicueta was met by the head of Torres, some sixteen yards out, with his powerful header beating Guzan all ends-up and going in the top corner.

The second came just before the half hour mark when, after Hazard had been fouled just outside the area, David Luiz stepped forward to deliver the perfect free-kick to beat Guzan comfortably, for his 1st Premier League goal of the season.

The third less than five minutes later came after Azpilicueta had won a corner. Mata delivered the ball, Cahill saw his shot kept out by Guzan but Ivanovic was on hand to head home his 4th Premier League goal of the season.

The first half definitely belonged to Chelsea with the Villa goal, often, under siege, a siege which saw shots from Azpilicueta, Luiz and Mata all blocked. All Villa had to show for their endeavour was a shot from Bannan that flew over the bar.

Second Half - If Chelsea were dominant in the first half they were rampant in the second half, adding a further FIVE goals.

Strangely enough, we had to wait until just before the hour mark when Lampard made it 4-0 with a splendid low finish from twenty-two yards out for his 100th Premier League goal in London.

Villa battled on but the collapse game starting in the 75th minute when Ramires rammed home a shot, after a great ball from Piazon split the defence. At 5-0 it was only a matter of how many.

With 79 minutes gone, it was 6-0 after Oscar was tugged by Herd and the Brazilian picked himself up to smash home the spot-kick for his first goal in the Premier League.

The carnage continued in the 84th minute when Hazard cut in from the wing, exchanged passes with Oscar and finished in spectacular fashion, to make it 7-0.

There was a brief interlude in proceedings when Piazon was fouled in the area only to pick himself up and see Guzan save his spot kick, but it was 8-0 into stoppage time when Ramires fired home after the Villa defence was opened up.

Just the pick-me-up we need ahead of Christmas and a testing programme.

Chelsea - Cech, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole, Lampard (Ramires-61), Luiz, Moses, Mata (Piazon-74), Hazard, Torres (Oscar-67)

Unused Subs - Turnbull, Ferreira, Marin, Ake

Chelsea Scorers - Torres (3), Luiz (29), Ivanovic (34), Lampard (59), Ramires (75+91), Oscar pen (79), Hazard (84)

Chelsea Yellow Cards - Nil

Chelsea Red Cards - Nil

Congrats Rafa keep up the good work. Get the players you need in January and see if you can defy the odds and get a few trophies. I would love to see you beat + stop United...and I'm convinced that Chelsea is the only team who can.

Luiz makes our midfield more mobile, not much backward and side passes, more of forward and penetrating passes, that's what we need....

piazon would score more goals if he is given more oppurtunity then torrrs...the one two between piazon oscar haz moses were piazon more often and we dont have to look outside for players...we have players in our academy who are far better then the players we run after...hazard was brilliant play oscar in place of lamps from the starts the guy has to start he would be waste to sit on bench and david luiz is better in midfield....azpi is fantastic...moses is good he needs to improve his first touch...

Agree @Lat, definitely more free flowing. Mikel has that odd long ball pass which finds it target but most times it's either head down, sideways or back pass. You could tell the difference w/ Luiz.

Oscar in place of Lamps? That would be a waste of talent.. Did you not see what he can do in the final third? He's not a pivot player.

Our back-line was solid. Luiz belongs in the mf as he is a complete boss. I've said that ever since he arrived at the club and Rafa being the first to put him in that position just shows how good a manager he actually is. Lamps had a great game today, sprayed that ball all over the place, took his goal great as well which was well deserved, legend. Hazard was incredible today, absolutely incredible what a player. Torres led the line well today and his goal was amazing, it was because of he that we went on a romp. The subs were incredible as well, Rambo played great, Oscar was phenomenal as always and i am very, very impressed with what i saw from Piazon.

I enjoyed every bit of the match and wished it didnt end. Where will i start to comment? I mean all the players were brilliant. Piazon reminds me of Kaka, looking forward to seeing more of him in the days ahead. And,believe it or leave it, Luiz is more of a midfield than a defender. I feel for Mikel, cos he's got a big fight ahead of him. Azpi,Hazard,Oscar and Moses were all in another planet today.

Luiz in at midfield was a huge upgrade from mikel, no doubt about that! his energy, timing on the challenge, commitment and solid play in CM was exactly what i've wanted to see from our team since essien in his prime at that position, combine that with his set piece ability and eye for that killer pass and you wonder if he won't be better and more importantly why our other managers couldn't see that and some of us who understand a little about football could???

The early goal by Torres was the catalyst for the rout, left Villa rattled and they never recovered from that goal,as the young Villa lads never really knew how to get back on track. Villa like to sit deep and play on the counter, relying on Benteke's speed and strength. All the pre-match planning was thrown outa the window once we scored early and it was down hill from there for em. Top performance by our lads, they got stuck in from the very first minute to the last. And like I slag him when we fail to play to par,he does deserve some credit for the win...good one Rafa. Reading some comments from fans who are getting overly excited and talking about a remarkable season to come...Really? Like I said above,it we were great, but we also took advantage of an inexperienced Villa team. Up the Chels!!

Lampard said that this match reminded him of old Chelsea, we played with determination, DESIRE and hunger. We made the runs behind and were at them from the first whistle. We played less good looking passes (meaning we did not pass like Barca but more like Dortmund i.e. with less than 5 passes we were able to get shots on target) and we attacked with purpose.

Luiz + Mikel will be something to behold and they will destroy opposing teams. I'm won't get carried away into thinking that we don't need players in January because we do...but we may not need more than three. DS is already gone, Cole maybe...I'm praying for the dude in the #8 shirt + Malouda. So a striker, midfielder, defender. Piazon and Chalobah can play with the bigger kids now. For all the bad press Rafa gets he must also take credit for the team's improved form. As I said in another post he should pay less attention to being liked by the fans and concentrate on completing the overhaul of the team. Win as many games as you can Rafa:)

One positive I noticed is how our back 4 weren't exposed once today. In recent weeks (or our "bad moment" to steal a phrase) our defence used to get exposed way to often and more often than not lead to conceding goals. It was easy for players to get into that dangerous position between the midfield and defence. Rafa has done well in recognising the problem and closed the space between CM midfield and DF. This made it difficult for their players to feed benteke today. It reminds me a little of Mourinho's tactics in how he made us defensively solid by having vertually no gap between defence and midfield and Makalele and Essien were the best in the position. It also reminds me a bit of Rafa's best season at anfield, when they finished second in 2009 but were playing flawless football in the second half of the season. Alonso was the man who denied the space between midfield and the defenders.

I've read a lot of analysis about this game and a few before this and two sentences used struck me as very true and important. The first - if you control the midfield you dominate the game, evident from our failures against specific teams and United being second best most games despite winning, and second - luiz is perfect in the midfield when Chelsea will have the ball. That's because he does well with it and if he does recycle possession we tendto keep it.

That was a flattering performance. I was actually scared cos Villa have been playing very well lately and Benteke has been a revelation. Rafa got the better of them tactically. Like a said on my bb group, Villa seemed to have no plan B. Benteke was perfectly kept offside all game long. The high point of the game for me was when Piazon came on. You could see the excitement on his face;he just loved playing with Hazard,Oscar,Moses and Ramires. Did you notice Hazard urging him to take the penalty? There was disbelieve in his eyes. Thanks Rafa for making us smile and laugh; thanks for the excitement and the early xmas present. If Luiz is gonna feature more in the midfield, then we may have to buy a centre back esp has Terry's knew is having complications. I'd love a cb who is versatile. David luiz is a very versatile player; over the course of his career he has played in DM, fullback and cb, I think we shd get anoda versatile guy. It takes d pressure off the team esp when there are injuries. Reminds me of Ferreira in his prime, he could play fullback and centre back. A versatile player also helps in squad rotation. As winter window approaches I pray we buy carefully so as not to wreck the team spirit through panic buying. Happy xmas in advance folks!
