What an early Christmas present that was!
Team News - Rafa Benitez chose to make three changes from the starting eleven that won at Elland Road in midweek. Bertrand was replaced by Cole, Cahill coming back after suspension with Luiz moving into defensive midfield in place of Ramires and Hazard coming back in place of Oscar. In midfield, Frank Lampard was making his 500th Premier League appearance.
First Half - Chelsea got the action underway and were to romp to a 3-0 half time lead. The first goal came as early as the 3rd minute when an excellent ball in, from Azpilicueta was met by the head of Torres, some sixteen yards out, with his powerful header beating Guzan all ends-up and going in the top corner.
The second came just before the half hour mark when, after Hazard had been fouled just outside the area, David Luiz stepped forward to deliver the perfect free-kick to beat Guzan comfortably, for his 1st Premier League goal of the season.
The third less than five minutes later came after Azpilicueta had won a corner. Mata delivered the ball, Cahill saw his shot kept out by Guzan but Ivanovic was on hand to head home his 4th Premier League goal of the season.
The first half definitely belonged to Chelsea with the Villa goal, often, under siege, a siege which saw shots from Azpilicueta, Luiz and Mata all blocked. All Villa had to show for their endeavour was a shot from Bannan that flew over the bar.
Second Half - If Chelsea were dominant in the first half they were rampant in the second half, adding a further FIVE goals.
Strangely enough, we had to wait until just before the hour mark when Lampard made it 4-0 with a splendid low finish from twenty-two yards out for his 100th Premier League goal in London.
Villa battled on but the collapse game starting in the 75th minute when Ramires rammed home a shot, after a great ball from Piazon split the defence. At 5-0 it was only a matter of how many.
With 79 minutes gone, it was 6-0 after Oscar was tugged by Herd and the Brazilian picked himself up to smash home the spot-kick for his first goal in the Premier League.
The carnage continued in the 84th minute when Hazard cut in from the wing, exchanged passes with Oscar and finished in spectacular fashion, to make it 7-0.
There was a brief interlude in proceedings when Piazon was fouled in the area only to pick himself up and see Guzan save his spot kick, but it was 8-0 into stoppage time when Ramires fired home after the Villa defence was opened up.
Just the pick-me-up we need ahead of Christmas and a testing programme.
