David that is, not Aston!
The tabloid press appear to be in agreement that Rafa Benitez is targeting the Barcelona forward David Villa in the January transfer window,
Our interim gaffer appears, if you read between the lines, quite confident of landing the Spanish international and for a quite reasonable fee.
The fee being universally quoted is £12 million, but would it be a good deal?
On the positive side, we`d be bringing to the club a player that openly admitted, in a previous article, he likes playing alongside Fernando Torres. There`s also the fact that he is a proven goal-scorer, whilst many would consider a fee of £12 million as a snip for an experienced world-class striker.
But what about the negatives?
Villa is now thirty-one years old, his best days are probably behind him, he`s also been out of action (with a broken leg) for eight months. Since returning from injury he`s not been able to get back into the Barcelona first team on a regular basis.
So, if we are targeting David Villa, what`s the verdict?
Would he be a decent acquisition or are we merely buying a Barcelona cast-off?
