In for Villa?

David that is, not Aston!

The tabloid press appear to be in agreement that Rafa Benitez is targeting the Barcelona forward David Villa in the January transfer window,

Our interim gaffer appears, if you read between the lines, quite confident of landing the Spanish international and for a quite reasonable fee.

The fee being universally quoted is £12 million, but would it be a good deal?

On the positive side, we`d be bringing to the club a player that openly admitted, in a previous article, he likes playing alongside Fernando Torres. There`s also the fact that he is a proven goal-scorer, whilst many would consider a fee of £12 million as a snip for an experienced world-class striker.

But what about the negatives?

Villa is now thirty-one years old, his best days are probably behind him, he`s also been out of action (with a broken leg) for eight months. Since returning from injury he`s not been able to get back into the Barcelona first team on a regular basis.

So, if we are targeting David Villa, what`s the verdict?

Would he be a decent acquisition or are we merely buying a Barcelona cast-off?

Even if we are lookin for a short term striker to do the job until we can get Falcao start of next season, we can do a better deal than this one ...but if we can GUARANTEE Falcao , then i wouldnt necessarily be opposed to Villa

I would also be saying to myself , if we are only looking for a short term fix, then why not give Lukaku a chance to show what he can give us??

Only a loan deal would be reasonable. 12 million for a 31 year old is too much. Remember Deco for 8 million at 30 years?

@Blue_mel..Falcao, FT9 and Villa cant work for us...the trio will be on insane wages..and our present formation only plays one striker....while i will be happy if we have 3 or more strikers...we cant be paying players a lot to sit on teh bench...we can do better by bringing in younger players who will be a lot cheaper and can give us more value over time...i think that is the chelsea strategy a few world class stars..and then get plenty talents in the youth rank with only the very best making it to the first team while others will be sold at a profit...

I agree layor..thats why , I think instead forking out 12m or even paying out xtra wages, lets use what we already have - Lukaku - give him his first team chance (on the assumption e cant get Falcao till June) to see hether he can be integrated into the team even as a backup (if Torres cant work with Falcao). With FFP arriving , why spend 12m when we dont need to ?

I agreed if it is just a loan as bringing back Lukaku may not be suitable. Let him earn his stripes in WBA for time being.... We just need to control his wages and the best would be on loan....

i think chelsea shouldl go for him for a loan deal till the end of the season....after that go for a good young striker..signing falcoa will add more problem rather than more solution...

blue can you guarantee that we will win pl if we sign him...will he be scoring agnst manu and manc for other teams also..signing falcoa is not the soultion instead build a good young big squad with talented players player like damio isco schrulle wamaya and there are lot of them we can get on less price...we dont need 50 million striker now ..he is also askng insane wages...what if he gets flop like torres and then we have to keep him playing because he has a huge price tag just like torres case...what about other chelsea players like mata rami iva etc...who will be receving less salary than saying is that dont risk all your money on one player...make a good team first..

There are some transfer speculations that is worth raising an eyebrow at, but this aint worth considering, either on loan or a 12m purchase, david villa to chelsea won't happen, I think we have a striker linedup but defo not villa

@schlok...we already have a good young squad! yes there is still players that need relacing ..Lampard , Cole and probably JT.. but we already have a good caore of youth..Lukaku , Piazon etc. Luiz being moved to DM is already like a new player. We hae KDB available if we need him. We dont need to buy any new Forwards or midfielders except for Falcao. Maybe a replacement for Lampard - job done

I dont think we should get Falcao in January...we need to diversify risk by getting 2-3 talents for the same price of one player...that is wisdom for me...fingers crossed.!!

blue mel yaa we have good core of players but we dont have big squad...and players your mentioning like lukaku piazon and also add you seriously think they will get oppurtunity at chelsea id ont think so...till you dont have a manger who will be there for 4 to 5 yr at chelsea forgot about our youth dvelopment program at chelsea there wont be place for youth till you have a stable manager at chelsea...dont include josh lukaky piazon or any of our yoth team as a squad player becasue they wont get cenough chance nor our manager will risk them...thats why i was saying buy isco 17 million buy out prajnic 12 million wamaya 10 million and there are many more who we can get on less price and who could challenge for first team chance...we need a better squad players who could challenge for first team...not just for the sake of being a squad players...

shlok, im thinking we both have the same target . a strong young team... but if we buy these players that you mention.. its even less likely that our own already bought youngsters will get their chance. Learn from the past and look at whats happened to our previous youth , they get bored and dispirited waiting on the sidelines for their chance while Lampard, Ashley , Drogba , Malouda etc ( the Mourinho team) gets played week in week out regardless of results. Look at where they are now, Hamburg , one of them even at Liverpool . Look at LUkakus attitude. he even saying hes not returning unlss he ges first team playing time. though i disagree with his attitude, I can hardly blame him - i do sympathise.. Why buy more players when we already have all that we need , except for the playing time they need. All the players you mention are commendable players to want in any team, but will they have the experience of the PL that Lukaku and Josh has ? We need to minimise what we spend here on. We already have Kevin De Bruyne and otheryoungsters waiting to have their chance...we dont need to buy more... just one world class striker .. to replace Drogba ...that is Falcao

In buyin villa,we are merely buyin a barca outcast..villa is everything we are against-he is old +30,he would comand high wages,he was injured for 8months and is strugglin for form(remember torres at the fools) e.t.c...

Its just tabloid talk - there is no way Chelsea will buy a player who is that old. They are not giving deals to players over 30 so why would you expect them to BUY 31 year old.

blue mel thats the harsh reality at chelsea....either bring in a manager and let him manag chelsea for a long period give him time to build his this way he can bring in the youth players in chelsea first team...or else you have to buy players so that our squad doesnt fall short....and we have to build a big good strong get our youth chance in first team first we have to stabalize our club by stop keeping firing managers one after another...your youth players wont get chance till we have a managers who is there for a long period...

Again i hope this is just idle fantasy of so called journalists with nothing better than to print conjecture because if this were to happen i will be so mad..this is how we made mistakes with the signings of sheva and of El Nino himself. David Villa was once the best pure striker in europe based on stats..the operative word..once..he is now on the back side of his career, just coming back from a major injury that nearly ended his career and cannot make it into the barca starting line up despite Sanchez being rather poor...finally the guy is 31...are we seriously going to justify giving this guy a bumper multiple year contract (because that is the only way he would leave Barca to come to us) when we denied that to Drogba, and apparently now to Lamps and Cole..please tell me this is not happening..please tell me Roman and his three amigos are smarter than this.

David Villa, one of my favourite players, plays for the club I hate very much.I am a big fan but he's 31.He cannot bench Pedro,Tello,Sanchez. What makes you think he will bench Hazard,Nando,Moses? He will provide us options. He can play right, left, centre.Anything under 10 million and i would take him. When he's at his best,I rate him above CR7,Leo,Falcao and just below Iniesta. He's a genius.

Villa on loan will be a great addition. He can play both on wings and centre. He can complement Torres. he will give a option to rotate when moses is away for AFC. Loan can be beneficial to all parties involved. He will not hinder our long term plans. We can still go and get our choice striker in Summer.

if we appear to be moving on the over 30 brigade how can it be we would want a 31 year old who has only just recovered with a broken leg and has not played much football dont you feel barca want to recoup some of their money back
