'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Starting at the Back!

With John Terry out injured and with Frank Lampard being, shamefully, ushered towards the exit door, Petr Cech appears to be stepping forward more to give his views.

Our stand-in captain, ahead of a difficult looking trip to Goodison Park, has spoken out about how Rafa Benitez has changed things around at Stamford Bridge, remarking in the media this morning,

"We look better organised."

"That is the difference. We were conceding so many goals. We were very open and suddenly we are defending as a team much better."

"I think that is the key because we were not defending well as a team."

"We were conceding too many goals and now suddenly we are back to our ways where we are difficult to score against and that is a big help."

"And, of course, we have the quality players who can score goals. Against Aston Villa we scored eight but against Norwich one was enough, which is good."

"You need the whole team to defend. We have really attack-minded players and sometimes we were not making the right choices in terms of defensive transition."

"I think what has improved is that we are pressing the ball much better, so it gives us time to re-organise and I think this is the most significant change."

Don`t they say great sides are built on a sound defence!

Let`s see how it stands the test that Everton will provide this Saturday.

No one is shamefully usherin lampard towards the exit door, the club's safety come first, legend come later.....well said petr,we look a lot more organised and assured under rafa.hopefully we continue to keep tight at the back when we visit everton on sunday

merlin you should stop this legends worship. Club first players later. Just as frank is going to the press and creating this shameful negative propaganda about the club he "LOVES" let him also publicly announce that he is willing to take a pay cut. If the club does not give him a new contract then i shall also join you in calling the board's decision shameful.

Good point Cech. We shall see how good our back 4/our organization/our defending as team are against Everton & Stoke.

I honestly think RDM was out of his depth and the experience that RB brings has calmed the seas. I particularly like the pressing aspect, that is nice to see since it is such a statement of intent.

@ merlin. You mean on 'Sunday'

Most of u don't understand what its like for chelsea fans who go there on every match day for years and are attached to a player, and a succesful player at that, so for their heroes to be treated like this is something most people won't want to bear
Desmondadonis
@des,how is he bein treated??that the club has refused to offer him a new contract for understandable reason so whats the big deal?? In as much as we love lampard our love for cfc should come 1st,the club's financial safety is of paramount importance over legend affiliations

Wise words from Cech...as another wise fellow said somewhere..offense will win you games, defense will win you championships. Those who like to sully the good name of Jose's time with us..this was what characterized his regime..the philosophy of building from the back..it is something he and Rafa share as far as football philosophy...the question remains how long Roman will abide with this since it is apparent he rather prefers all out attacking footie..the truth is to win (which last i checked was the point of the game in the first place) pragmatism and solid defense is paramount..lovely attacking footie comes after that in the list of priorities not before and not instead of. There is a price to pay for attention to quality team defense..it may not always be pretty..there may be 0-0 bore draws and 1-0 slim wins as well as the occasional loss attached to that kind of philosophy but if stuck with it eventually leads to sustained success..the key though is patience and unfortunately that is a virture neither Roman nor our board have any clue about.

Once we play Everton & Stoke we shall find out the TRUE character of our team, our defence will be properly tested, it will be difficult for our attacking players to find space and score goal/s, all players will have less time on the ball as Everton/Stoke will close us down as a UNIT and bully our players.
B2K420
Surely, our defense has improved, but still can improve a lot...Ivanovic & Cahill are starting to play together regularly and they can improve as they play more...Now with a TEST PASSED at everton, we should concentrate more to not to lose points at games where we should win.
