Turn Up For the Book?

With Ashley Cole set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with the club unwilling to show any flexibility on their over-30 policy, could a very unlikely replacement come through the in-door?

Well if one news source is correct then that may well be the case with it being suggested that Chelsea have joined the list of suitors willing to pay a fee approaching £15 million to lure Leighton Baines away from Goodison Park.

The twenty-eight year-old full back is also, if rumours are correct, being pursued by Manchester United and Paris St Germain.

If Chelsea can't offer a 30yr old Ashley Cole a two year contract extention,is it paying 15million Euros for a 28ar old Baines that is wisdom???? I am definitely sure that this policy would come back to hunt us some day except the board begins to become flexible. If Drogba, one of our best players ever wasn't offered what he was demanding, then I fear that same may happen to Cole,Terry & Lampard. One thing is certain i.e. this policy would never make celebrate our current legends the way they ought to be celebrated.Wishing Chelsea all the best with this policy.NO CHELSEA NO FOOTBALL.

why waste 15 million on 28 year baines...it would make more sense then give cole 2 year contract....rather go for a young left back...chelsea should give ryan more opputunity not one or two matches let him give half a season to show his worth...after that decide what to do...

if are allowing cole leave (which would be quite idiotic), the rumour about baines makes sense, he is good player...but paying 15m for a 28year old who is definitely not as good as the player we are releasing makes zero sense and is close to madness...but with our club you never can tell...For that price, i hope the rumour is not true...

If am correct,That £15mil would cover cole's salary for 3 or more years..but we are about to spend it on buyin baines only, excludin his personal terms which aint gonna be cheap

@KenCFC: You are spot on. We shouldn't buy a 28 year old LB for 15m we can give that money to Cole and keep him for 2 to 3 years or we can look for a YOUNG world class Left Back.

1 year rolling contract. End of. If our lads love the club and the fans they will have no problem signing one. RIGHT? He's fecking fantastic, keep him at the same wages. Why is this so difficult? If he can't accept that then I have no problems with him moving on, I don't want a player here that is more concerned about himself than the club. Look at JT, Messi, what would they do? It's about the club. What, give him 2 years b/c he asks or bribes us for it? What kind of implications will that have down the road? Players knowing they can get the club to bend the rules to satisfy them.. Gosh!

Wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be true, and no one should be either...Its basically the way the Club runs its business for years now,(taking the quick fix approach). A well run Club would give Cole a 2 year contract and let Bertrand see more first team action slowly phasing Bertrand into the first team while his game develops. When ashley eventually leaves Patrick takes the spot as the 2nd LB behind Bertrand. Same thing Man United did with Gary Nevile and Rafael, its common logic of how a well oiled club should run.

btw cole recently turned 32 not 30. but 15 million for baines would be utter lunacy. but don't worry it won't happen. this is just gutter press on a nothing happening i need to fill column inches day.

Give Cole what he wants period. This is one topic we shouldn't be discussing now. How may world class left backs rank behind Cole? Oh yes! He's the best in the world and others follow. I'd watch his goal line clearances all day long just the same way as i watch Mata's free kicks, Didier's strikes and Hazard's dribbles. Please don't let this be the last year i'll be watching Ashley Cole.

Why nobody is talking about patrick van aanholt??? he is better than bertrand and can be equally good as ashley cole. i think he and bertrand can replace cole efficiently.

I will continue to fail to grasp just what people see in Leighton Baines. His ability to whip a mean cross in does not disguise the fact that he is an extremely average defender and footballer at that. The fact that he's English mean he's overhyped even more. Bertrand is a lot better than him already. I just hope Baines stays at Everton rather than going to United in a year or two as we all know Hodsgon would never be able to resist the urge of playing an English Man United player, regardless of their quality. If that happens, it's bye bye to Bertrands England career, despite him being the better player, even now.

Cmmon guys, ryan is not as good as leighton baines in my opinion, leighton baines is a good player and we all know it, but I agree with the VC faithful that we should not spend 15million for him when we have PVA and betrand in our books, , but I'll take baines over any other experienced LB

@the blue indian,i thought i was the only one who is seein that, thank Goodness u do too..i have followin PVA eversince i saw him play the carlin cup clash against newcastle few seasons ago, then he was among a few youngsters that shone..and after seein some vittesse games this season i would say without fear of bein equivocal that PVA is better than bertrand

Nothing our board does suprises me anymore. If this is true Leighton better be wise..he is 28 and he better sign a contract of at least 4 and if possible 5 yrs because once he gets that first contract that will be it as far as his career with Chelsea FC..he better learn from what happened with Ash. Left to me, why we are going to spend ~ 15mill on another left back when we have both PVA and Bertrand who have not been given sustained chances to make the position theirs in Chelsea blue is another example of the madness that goes for policy in the running of our dear club. I cant be bothered..the fellows who run the club can do what they like. Time will tell how wise these sorts of decisions turn out to be.

how can we let go the best left back in the premiership that is madness come on chelsea wake up and get this sorted look at giggs and scholes it works give him his 2 year contract he is a model professional his experience can help our up and coming players same goes for lamps we need them

It's a bit academic; yes, I agree we should hang on to both Ashley and Lamps for a couple of more seasons; Lamps would probably even accept one year extensions and a pay cut. But Ashley is having none of it, and is moving to PSG whether we like it or not. And as we can't rely on Bertrand and Van Aanholt to provide that extra quality which is the difference between champions and also runs, I for one think Leighton Baines would make an excellent addition. Make sure to sign him for a full 5 year term, though. Professional footballers play for a longer time at a higher level these days, and our 30 year rule should be amended to 32 year with that n mind.
