Four options to replace David Luiz

If we deem that is what is required.

Nonetheless, with Luiz now breaking into our midfield five, we could well do with the addition of a centre-back to the fray, with John Terry injured, that leaves just Ivanovic and Cahill as the fit centre-backs, whilst Cesar Azpilicueta is now our preferred right-back.

With Branislav Ivanovic able to play as a right back also, you would expect another defender to be a priority, even with 18 year old right-back Wallace soon to tie up a deal at Stamford Bridge and is expected to stay in Brazil until the end of the season.

Here are my favourite four centre-backs available at the moment, and a bit of a background about them:

Dedé - Vasco Da Gama - It is only a matter of time before the 6ft 4 Brazilian centre-back makes a move to one of Europe's elite, after breaking into the national team last year, he has snuck onto the radar, with AC Milan being linked, and even neighbours QPR were rumoured to be weighing up an audacious bid for the 24 year-old. The fruits of European football and the Premier League could well tempt the young star, and could be a great choice due to the fact we already have a host of Brazilians at the club, David Luiz, Oscar, Ramires, and of course Lucas Piazon, are sure to be around the Bridge for years to come. He could also be eased into the team, with Terry sure to be around for the next couple of years, I can imagine Dede would still be comfortable with a rotational role, and as we have seen this year, should we continue our European and domestic success, there would be plenty of chances for him to shine. He would be available for around £7-£8m, and as we have seen with Azpilicueta this year, cheaper certainly doesn't mean you have to cut-back on quality.

Ryan Shawcross - Stoke - A real John Terry-esque defender, Shawcross could be a perfect long term replacement for the our England man, and at just 25, he has already chalked up nearly 150 Premier League appearances, being the main talking point of a robust Stoke City defence, one that has only conceded 14 goals this season so far, which in fact is less than 12 of the last 20 Premier League winning teams at this stage, which says a lot. Shawcross has stated he isn't looking to leave Stoke, but has stalled on a new six-year deal at the club, and with just 18 months left on his contract, a bid of near £10m this January could definitely ruffle some feathers in their camp.

Mats Hummels - Borussia Dortmund - At 24, he is already a regular for both club and country, notching 137 Bundesliga appearances, and 23 caps for Germany since his rapid rise to fame since 09/10.Likened to the great Franz Beckenbauer, I would class him as a more sensible David Luiz, able to showcase his attacking mind, whilst also being an absolute rock in defence, as well as harnessing the pace and strength to make him an all-round pain in the posterior to opposition strikers. Hummels has recently signed a new contract with the German side until 2017, although a large bid could tempt him to England, as he has already picked up both the Bundesliga title twice, and the German equivalent of the FA Cup, he may well want to pursue new challenges and titles. Dortmund have the edge of being in the Champions League still, making a January move less likely, although with us already scooping the trophy, and realistically having more of a chance to win it again, he may well decide it is best for his career. A bid of around £20-£25m though may be needed, although that is hardly a figure that would scare away our owners.

Jeffery Bruma: currently on loan from Chelsea to Harmbug SV

Of course, all of this is hypothetical, although with the vast riches available to Abramovich, it really wouldn't surprise me if we did try and replace David Luiz now it looks like he`s settled in midfield. If so, I don't think he could do far wrong with any of these four choices.

1) Shawcross (25, 6ft 3): Will be my first choice although I do think ManU must have put a clause/agreed with Stoke that you will not sell him to top 4 opposition. I think If we try to buy him ManU will get the first priority. 2) Kalas/Chalobah: IMO they are light weight to play in CB position. They will get brushed aside easily. 3) Anderson Vital da Silva (Dede, 24, 6ft 4)/Mats Hummels (24, 6ft 3): I have never seen them play so can't comment on them. I am not sure will they suit EPL.

This is totally premature. Luis has played 3 games in midfield, all against mediocre oppostion. In my mind this has just increased his versatility for the side but to be talking of a permanent move for him to the midfield ..whoa hold on there. In every game Luis has played in the middle he has looked good going forward but virtually every time he has lost the ball or broken formation we have been in trouble. Before people start talking of him being the second coming of Makelele (as a DM) which i dont think he is, or our version of Andrea Pirlo (as a CM) which i suspect may be his better position, let us see how he looks in the middle when we play decent everton. If we need another CB btw my choice is to recall Bruma. This annoying practice of chelsea FC buying players for fun while having the equivalent of two teams in players on loan and unused is unsustainable and needs to stop.

Shawcross will be my 1st choice given his Bpl experience. I see him settling in just like Cahill and he wont cost much. If we are sure of Bruma,it will make lotta sense if we get bring him back.

GabeU, i dont see why it should considered premature to move Luiz to D.midfield more and more going by the fact he has succeeded there even before he was deployed that position. If you watch his game closely you will know he is tailor made for the mid. And the issue of him going to CM shouldnt even arise cos him being moved to the DM is a case of necessity rather than luxury, put differently,we needed an urgent cover there unlike in the CM where we have abundant options. We must understand that he makes our mid more intimidating and it reflects in the result of the matches he played there for us irrespective of how low you would categorize the opponents. We thrashed teams that can ordinary pose huge threat for us and they automatically becomes a case of a mediocre opponent. Now it is no longer a call to move him to DM,it is now move him to CM. From CM some people will start saying he is best for the CF.

Good defenders but weve got our very own players in Bruma,Chalobah,Kalas,Nathan Ake! Why should we buy another? We have also got Wallace to compete for the right back position,Chalobah and Bruma are very versatile as well. We cant just buy and buy and buy,why do you people think we have an academy? Just for the fun of it?????

Bruma cant get into the Hamburg side right now there is talk of sending him to Vitesse, Right now Kalas is a far better prospect than Bruma, its a shame I really used to like Bruma but his future witg us is not looking promising.

It's not premature to adress the issue; even though Luiz only pulled off 3 games as a midfielder, he was too much a defensive liability (sure, Terry, Brana and Cahill also move up for corners, but never loose the ball dribbling or try to make difficult passes that are intercepted). And because of that, Luiz is more akin to Ramires/Romeu than Mikel/Chalobah. Let's not plan for Luiz to return to any defensive duties, but unleash him as a box-to-box player. But with Nathan Ake, (whom I rate significantly higher than Bruma), there's no need to buy a new CB as Terry'll be back in a week or so.

There is no need to replace him. He should be played as holding midfielder where he has excelled. Temporarily he can be a backup centre back. We save a lot of money by doing so. A new holding midfielder isn't in integrated into our system of play. I'd ask you firstly who is playing better in this position from our current players? Not Mikel, not Lampard, not Romeu.

It doesnt sound good though that in that defense there is no single player from Cfc system to understudy the more experienced players. It would be nice to have any of Kalas,Hutch,Bruma etc in the mix to have a look in once in a while.

For the moment Kalas propably is the first central defender to have a chance at Chelsea. I hope he continues his good work and can impress enough for his chance.

Hutch has his knee problems and without those he is mature enough to be in the squad. As for Bruma it is a more difficult situation as he might be already (and propably is) behind Kalas in the pecking order.

Back to central midfield, Chalobah is probably as good a candidate to get his chance and he could be a better option than Mikel. Nathaniel creates chances and scores along doing a good job in midfield. So it could be Luiz - Chalobah in a season or two.

We shouldn't go for Benoit Assou-Ekotto as he is only an average player, massively overrated. He'd disappear for the African tournament, which starves our squad already enough. We should rather bring in one of our juniors to compete with Bertrand.

1970.., well,i'd like one junior player in that defense,Kalas sure look ready for the 1st team, but i see it that his growth will be obstructed if he is frequently benched. As for Chalobah, dont you think its too early to rush him?

30/12/2012 11:06:00

Chalobah is an early developer but it might be better to give him still 1,5 seasons at Watford where Zola is having faith in him. He needs to be playing now regularly in order to develop. Bringing him to our bench isn't ideal. So, we should be patient but this player has promise.

I thought as much. Nathaniel is certain to wear the blues armband some day. And given the fact that Bruma was played in a few games before being sent out at about Kalas' age,it doesnt look ideal to bring a much younger Kalas to come and experience same fate. Though injury might have blighted Bruma's development to some extent,i think he is at the right age,at 21-22,to come and complete his growth at Cfc. He didnt do badly in that game vs Aston villa ,though Heskey got the better of him in an occasion to help them snatch that 3 vs 3 draw in that match, i still think there's something to dig out in Bruma. We cant just give up on him.

With Ivanovic, Cahill as 1t choice CB and Terry as backup, what we need is a backup for Azipilicueta...Wallace will be joining in Jan (Their season has already ended). But, by recalling Bruma & we can have a backup for CB & RB...Maybe Bruma is not good at RB, but still can cover us there...Kalas has been very good at RB on loan at Vitesse...So, I doubt we will disturb him...
