Building the Team for the Future

Building the Team for the Future

Now that Chelsea has managed to get back to its winning ways, and more importantly with a fine sturdy balance in its defensive and offensive plays, it's time to evaluate the team and discuss the missing pieces which could transform Chelsea into a consistent winning team playing with the flair the owner demands of it.

Center Forwards (CF) - Chelsea need to add a CF that can take some of the pressure of Torres and more importantly provide the team with different strategic options in the attack. Though some may say recalling Lukaku could provide Chelsea with this option, I still think that Lukaku deserves to continue his progress at West Brom, besides a team like Chelsea need to have a minimum of 3 CF to be able to effectively compete on all fronts. An ideal CF, would be someone who has excellent movement in tight spaces, strength to hold up the ball, allowing the attacking midfielders to get into the game, strength in the air and can take long range shots when needed. Falcao would be the 1st choice, but for a lesser transfer amount Chelsea can still get Demba Ba or Bafétimbi Gomis who would be ideal additions to the team.

Attacking Midfield - Chelsea have great options in the attacking midfield with Mata, Hazard, Oscar and Moses having excelled in their attacking roles. The challenge going forward would be integrating the available youth or on loan resources mainly Piazon and Kevin De Bruyne into the team. I still think Marin when fully fit, with his speed and dribble provides another useful option for the team when playing against defences that prefer to defend deep.

Defensive Midfield (Pivot) - Luiz has settled well in his new pivot role, allowing Chelsea with both defensive cover but importantly quick offensive transition in terms of carrying the ball forward or making a great forward pass. It's however a little too early to say if Luiz is the long term option in this role but I do think at the moment Chelsea look effectively sufficient in this area with the available options of Mikel, Ramires, Luiz, Lampard and Romeu. However if Lampard's future is not sorted out, Fellaini would be an ideal replacement. He would provide Chelsea a more dynamic robust option in the midfield like Luiz, with his tireless running, ball control and strong aerial abilities. I would also like to see Josh McEachran given an opportunity to see what he can offer the team in the pivot role as he is a more creative option.

Defence - With Luiz more effective in the midfield or rather it can be said, not reliable in the defence, Chelsea would need to find a long term replacement to help Ivanovic and Cahill in the defence. An ideal replacement would be the type of defender with strength, pace and tactical awareness the likes of Vincent Kompany or Thiago Silva. Such types are difficult to find, so the second best option would be finding someone in the mould of Cahill who are young, skilful, passionate and eager to learn and progress. I like Ryan Shawcross but also think that in Tomas Kalas or Jeffrey Bruma we have sufficient talent for the future. I would like to see Ashley Cole stay for another year, but if not then Baines signed up as a replacement for Cole.

Coach - So far I like what Rafa has done but I would still like to see how Chelsea does against top teams like Manchester United or City before saying that he is the best future option for Chelsea. If Rafa has a good record in his games as interim manager, I would like him being given a long term contract and importantly the support to build and manage this Chelsea team.

We are building a team for the future and if the legends want to be a part of that future, they should take a massive paycut and 1yr rolling contract or jog on

Many good points. Rafa is certainly the man to take us forward, an unfortunate fact i'd say. This is my opinion though.

Nice article mate. Well thought out logical thoughts. I disagree with Gomis as a viable striking option for us but overall it would be great if we had this kind of long term planning guiding our team moving forward. Above all though we need some stability in the managerial position.

@shlok27...I am totally with you on that one...those are two peices of rough diamonds we 've got in our hands (KDB and Josh)...they are ready..end of

Going into the new year,i'd like my beloved club,Chelsea,as steered by the board and management to really think towards building a solid team that ,most importantly, is driven by an underlying philosophy, team spirit, tradition and style, which imo will be better actualized under a long serving and decision influencing MANAGER. Watching the yesterday game against Everton,i heard the commentary team mention that David Luiz doubles as the club's Manager and chairman. It mustnt be so in Cfc but emphasis should be given to the coaches influence, power and job security. Am talking about STABILITY. It might come at a cost,we may miss out on some trophies for 2-3 years, but you only need to look at ManUre,Assnal and Everton to understand the inherent benefits.

guess you dont know much of chelsea's squad fella! defensive midfield is sown up with probably the best player in the championship this first half of the season and totally won the man of the match award against Boro! i'm talking of the future chelsea captain and maybe the next best defensive midfielder for ngland to in Nat Chalobah! this kid will come back to cdc in the summer and im pretty sure he will be banging on the door for a first team place,he will be immense!

Pretty idiotic on the part of CFC to potentially let Frank go this window with JMac on loan. Think about it, one of the GREATEST midfielders ever to play in the top division is slowly getting phased out. You would think that CFC would have a talented youngster such as JMac - who will be in the pivot soon - in the first team to learn from Frank all the ins and outs of the game before he leaves. Who is he passing his knowledge onto? I know Mac is getting lots of matches at Boro and that is great, is what he needs, just a shame Frank may go without Mac learning from him both on the pitch but also in training in terms of work ethic.

@Gabeu, I am sure Roman also wants to have see managerial stability, but he wants to give time to the right manager. He thought AVB was the right man and gave extended time during our poor run last run. But AVB was unable to get things back to control, thanks to our Legendary players. Finally he was sacked. If Rafa shows that he has the right miind and direction to take this team forward, I am sure Roman will give him time. So far, the timing of all Roman's sacking are proved to be precise and save us from disaster. Roman believes in Pep, so will do his best to get him on board, otherwise he will give to anyother person he deemed to see right. But the manager who ever takes control should remember that Roman always watches the progress and will fire if you lose control or direction (this applies for Pep also).
01/01/2013 08:14:00
@blu_run i dont doubt Romans good intentions but if Roman applied those principles you speak of at ManU or Arsenal he would have fired SAF and Wenger long time ago. Same thing with Jupp Heynckes at Bayern or Jurgen Klopp while he was still building the present Borussia dortmund side. The bottom line is that his trigger happy finger is one of our clubs greatest problems right now. Dont be fooled by the fact that we still manage to pick up a trophy or two here and there. With Stability and Romans resources Chelse by now would have been the dominant dynasty of the BPL.
01/01/2013 13:45:00
Well what I think roman should do is make up his mind and try very hard to employ who he feels would take cfc to the next level and give that person time to do what he feels needed to be done, my thinking is that he is sending our veterans away because of pep, it might be that pep have told him the players he wants out of chelsea and roman is resolute and is phasing them out so there would be a smooth atmosphere for pep to work with, on the youngsters, we have players that are as good as the barca academy players in our squad, with proper coaching they'll be sucessful and we'll be a force to be reckoned with, my opinion next season Is that chalobah and josh mceachran should form a partnership in the pivot, I see It blossoming into something solid in future
