'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'Arrivederci' Frank James Lampard

So the writing is on the wall. I know he is leaving.

I know he is not the same player he once was. I know I bitched about him lot and lot of times in the past but I don't know why I am SAD.

I asked myself

'You criticized him for his poor performances like nobody'

'You called him going after money and holding the club hostage'

'Declined a lot in the past 2 years'

But why am I sad now. I don't know guys. Frank Lampard is leaving Chelsea in the summer after a decade. It`s going to be a long good bye. A goodbye for the next 6 months. Goodbye to one of the greatest players of Chelsea. It`s going to be really, really hard and long goodbye. All I want now is to win something just for him this season to send him off on a high like Drogba. No more bitching, no more criticism, no more contract talk from me guys. All I want now is to send off Lampard with the praise and dignity and appreciation for all he has done for our beloved CHELSEA.

For fans who are thinking 'Oh not another Lampard article'. I feel it is necessary and our obligation to write an article about Lampard. I don't know why any of other writers at VC like Gabeu, KAKUfrank etc didn't write an article on FL yet. So I am writing this piece.

So its goodbye for one of the best player (maybe greatest ever?) too wear our blue shirt in the summer. I am not going to discuss anything about his current contract situation with CFC or his decline as a player for the past 2 years etc etc. I am not gong to argue whether Chelsea is right to release Lampard with out making a credible offer. I am not going to argue who is right. Lampard or Chelsea? I don't care now.

LEGEND - When a player achieves the status Legend with any club supporters?

Scoring goals regularly? Like Lampard did for the past decade in our blue shirt (193 currently whilst I am writing it).Are you willing to bet he wont break our all time Bobby Tambling's scoring record this season? I won`t bet against FL guys even with half a season remaining and he still need to score 9 to equal and 10 to beat it.

Playing through personal pain? His Liverpool match in the CL semi final and his penalty will live even higher with lot of supporters including mine than even our CL truimph. After the passing of his beloved mother Pat. Racking up assist after assist for his team (130?) Lampard is one of the highest assisting midfielders in the past decade. He is even among the greatest assisting midfielders of the Premier League.

Winning Trophies? I don't think there are lot of players who are out there who could come close to Frank in his medals tally. 3 PL, 1CL, 4 F.A Cups, 2 League Cups not to mentions the numerous individual accolades he collected in the last decade with us. Love him or hate him Frank Lampard is a CFC legend. It`s undisputable.

If you try to argue against it the whole world will know you are a FOOL and MORON with out any advertisement.

Lampard has the record for most consecutive appearances in the Premier League (164). He won the Chelsea player of the year awards 3 times. He came second in the World Player of the year once. He`s the only midfielder to score more than 150 goals in the PL. 2nd most assists in the PL (91). He was voted as PL Player of the Decade. Second in the scoring charts of Chelsea with 193 goals and 130 assists. With a professional career that spans over more than 16 years and 860 appearances and 258 goals and 131+ assists(Club and Country) you can say that Lampard is a legend of the Premier League, legend of the Champions League and LEGEND of FOOTBALL in general.

'FAT FRANK' is the nickname that our opposition supporters are happy to dish out because of their HATE for him. If you want to measure how much respect your player is gaining on the opposition then you just need to see how much the opposition fans hate that particular player.(some exceptions to this rule like ZOLA in the past now MATA) If you ask Chelsea fans they will say how much they hate Rooney or Ronaldo or a Messi etc.

Lampard is no exception to this hate because he is the tormenter of their team so many times that they have gone on the personal insult route to break him down or let him engage with them in an argument or controversy. For each season they can`t break him they upped the stakes with higher insults and personal insults etc. But I can honestly say that Lampard has shown them his middle finger for more than 12 years now (with West Ham it`s more than 16).

For all his faults as a manager Claudio Ranieri is held in high esteem by CFC support because he is a excellent scout and his unerring eye for talent. He is the man who bought Cech to Chelsea gave JT his big break in the first team and he is the man who signed Makelele from RM. But he surpassed all this with the signing of Frank Lampard. Lots and lots of fans and managers thought Ranieri lost his mind when he bought Lampard for £11million from West Ham.

But Lampard racked up goals and assists like no other midfielder they`ve seen before in the Premier League. Mourinho had just arrived when Lampard and JT reached their peak and the rest his history. With RA and Jose the core team with JT FL the BLUE MOON raised like never before and gave the deserved JOY and HAPPINESS for lots and lots of fans who hadn`t tasted trophies for a long time. The likes of UTD, BARCA, RM etc are really afraid of Chelsea because Chelsea is not a team of over paid players they are a TEAM. They win together. They go down together.

Buying players is one thing but the player having the winning mentality is another thing (certain FT comes to the mind). Lampard has that will to win and playing through pain and suffer for the cause of Chelsea. Unbreakable self belief and ability to ride the storm calmly and coming out on the top..

Chelsea is the most hated club in England and in Europe may be in the whole world. The F.A are against Chelsea everybody knows that. UEFA is so corrupted that you can`t expect anything other than bias and hatred towards Chelsea from them. So when we see the collection of medals FL collected it`s even more remarkable with all this bias from the referees and influences from the FA and UEFA.

If you heard about Platini's comment about 'how CL is not good if UTD and CFC played in the final for the 2nd year in running. How it will be good for the competition to play Barca v UTD final. Then comes one of the worst refereeing performances ever seen (Overbo). I haven't even seen that type of refereeing in a 15 year non professional football match. With out these type of things lampard's collection of medals could be even more impressive.

My love for Frank Lampard is not just the statistics above. I love Lampard because he is not flashy. He is not the definition of most talented footballer. I don't think even the most ardent Chelsea fans will argue that Lampard is a great technical midfielder. But what we can all learn from Lampard is

'Even when the god didn't gave you the obvious great talent for a particular field either its football or work or business What ever the field you take in your life HARD WORD, DEDICATION, DETERMINATION will move you to the pinnacle of your field'

GOD didn't gave Lampard the football talent like a Maradona or Messi or Ronaldo or Ronaldinho but what god gave Frank is hard work and dedication. He achieved his greatness through his work nothing else. In terms of achievement I will rank Frank Lampard even more than Ronaldinho or Maradona. Both are great and geniuses but lost their way because they didn`t want to work. Lampard is not just a football player. If you want a role model in your life then there is no need for us to look anywhere else than Lampard.

Just last week only a story popped up in the papers about how he stayed after all the players who left from training at West Ham. His team mates at Upton Park made fun of him about how he has no life outside training ground and why he is doing the work nobody asked him to do?. He stayed hours more than any of them to practice his shooting, passing, assisting, running etc when he wasn't even a 20 year old. It`s the same at Chelsea, I remember a article about Lampard practicing a very very difficult volley in training for more than 5 hours continuously after a training season ended until he got that technique right.

Jose commented about his dedication after he scored a volley shot exactly the same one he practiced in the training months before. Mourinho said that the best professional footballer he ever worked with is Frank Lampard. This comes from the man who is a workaholic and dedicated coach like nobody in football. Carlo also said the same when compared Lampard and Maldini for their work ethics. Why are all these world famous coaches are praising Lampard? It`s because of his hard work. If you put a hard working Lampard one side and a lazy but greatest football player on the other side all the managers will choose Lampard only. Once asked about Lampard the red nose SAF said 'Exceptional'. Nothing else. If SAF (he hates anything related to Chelsea) says a Chelsea player is exceptional then what can we say about Lampard.

Lampard is a supremely fit footballer for his age (35 in summer). Most footballer who will lose their way after turning 30. Yet Lampard produced consistency in terms of playing matches or goals or assists in his 30's.Lot of players and managers and fans are horrified by Chelsea's refusal by not offering him an extension not only because he is a great player even at 35 he is more fitter, dedicated, hard worker than 90% of the footballers. Even though Lampard is a all round footballer who works hard on all the aspects of his game from defending to attacking one thing he is more famous for than anybody in the football. His LATE RUNS into the box and scoring goals.

Lot of fans are thinking that it`s easy. No it`s extremely hard and making it a habit is like Lampard is even harder. Can anybody from the VC world point out another midfield player who can score goals like Lampard from his type of late runs? Almost NONE.

More importantly I can`t see anybody in the past 15 years in football to score consistently like him. Mastering the work is one thing if you have the obvious talent for it. When you had minimum talent compared to lot of others on your field yet you are able to overtake them by your work is even more enormous.

'I can't stress the importance of working hard enough, work on all aspects of your game. If you do that and you have the ability, you'll come through.'

'I never relax on the year before. Every year I want to get more out of myself so I use it as a driving force, rather than a pressure thing.'

'I think as far as kids go, you just have to work hard. Work on your skills, keep focused.'

'There's so many kids out there and it's such a cut-throat world. I've seen a lot of my mates, you know, who are better players than me at a certain age, and they're not in football now.'
- FRANK LAMPARD.

'God gave players the talent... but some of them waste this talent but some of them with this kind of mentality make themselves better and these are the kind of the players that can last forever.' - Jose Mourinho.

Finally

'Lampard is not just a footballer. He is a ROLE MODEL to anybody in their life who want to achieve greatness in their chosen field'

'Arrivederci' Frank Lampard. For all the memories, happiness, trophies everything you gave to Chelsea for the past decade. Come back soon frank.

Great article.I am disgusted with Abramovich.I hope he does not do that with Terry.I hope the fans react very strongly at the Bridge and protest if that happens. He sacked a club legend and replaced him by a guy who is hated by everyone(not me though).Anyway,I don't want to shift from the content of the article."Thank you" is not wnough for Lampard is all I can say.
cfc250
Great article mate, yu stole the words ryt from my heart....gudbye Lamps
chokoz_cfs
Nobody will react gainst Abramovic, they are frightened that he will walk away, they don't realise that the value of the brand is such that a buyer will be easy to find even in today's market. So they will carry on bitching about Rafa and doing the stupid clapping on 16 minutes without actually taking on the one who causes the negative cr*p about the club I have supported for 50 years come this May. We need Abramovic to get a proper MD with knowledge of football, dump all the yes men and let somebody sensible run it but we all know he won't. I shall be sorry to see Frank go, I'm sure it needn't happen but if what we read is true, the Tsar blames him for the AVB business last season so that's that.
Ranners
We got nothing but love for Super Frank, but i'm happy with the board's decision either way. Nobody (except RA) knows for sure if he will still be here next year. I just find it funny that people keep calling RA names around this (that attitude is so utterly myopic) Frank will be 35yo come the Summer. Sentiments aside Chelsea need to be planning for life after him and even if FL is kept for another year, a replacement needs to be groomed now, preferably while FL is still on the playing roster (Apparently only benat will suffice). The problem the board will have is Lamps potential disruptive influence if he doesnt get the number of games he wants. The board also remember very well that Frank single handedly lost AVB his job because of this attitude. I hear AVB is still highly rated in the Chelsea Board room, so all is not forgiven re Frank in that respect. As earlier referred, i will support the Chelsea boards decision either way come the end of the season
JohnnyOz
Lets all vote him for the POTY. Great goodbye present.
Finn-fan
@ Ranners - the only reason the value of the brand is where it is is because Roman bought us on the brink of adminstration and invested his life's savings into the Club. I reckon he's invested over 15% of his worth into the club...lets not be ungrateful little wretches now!
JohnnyOz
Nicely written and well documented, but I feel u are writing it too soon, if u wrote this on the day he leaves, it will be difficult for any other article to beat its quality, ple keep more of this quality article coming.
Desmondadonis
Retire #8 and give him every PK available. I want him to get the record before he leaves.
RadioactiveD
@JohnnyOz, Frank Lampard did not get AVB sacked, from the 1st game he managed Chelsea, our fullbacks were up on the half way line, our central defenders were left isolated and the novice manager persisted with a new system that experienced players struggled to adapt too. AVB sacked himself. If RA can`t see that he is thick as his `football adviser` Emenalo. A great tribute to Frank, the only thing missing is the acknowlegement that statistically Frank Lampard is the greatest goal scoring midfielder in World football of all time. No one else gets close to the amount of goals per match ratio in a major league across the globe. If he`d produced this haul for Real Madrid, Barcelona or ManU, he would have already recieved this accolade and be knighted for his contribution to the game of football. Hold your head high Frank. Every other team would have loved you, but we were fortunate to have had you. You are an absolute legend both on and off the pitch.
Blueheart9
this is not ballon d'or this is sh***t ,, how did alonso and marcello made the world 11 i mean at least they should have included shweinestiger ( i don't care how it's spelled ) and Lahm
I hate CR7
There you have it you worshippers of Lampard. Was this cry that much for Drogba to be given a 2years contract when the club stood it's ground? What makes Lampard more special than Drogba in this respect? Perhaps because he is english and Drogba is African? You lots hate Roman in this case because he isn't racist or sentimental like some of you. Rule is rule, policy is policy, 30 plus is 30 plus and 1year contract should be 1year contract. I will never take any player ahead of chelsea, not even Lionel Messi. Up chelsea!
munich Glory
^Glory hunter munich fan LOL
josevis
Ugh, accusations of racism? And who said Lamps was "more special" than Drogba? A legend is a legend, and neither are exceptions. We've badly missed Drogba just as we'll badly miss Lampard. But I can assume by your comments that my rationale will either offend or elude you. I can't stress how little that bothers me.
RadioactiveD
The quality of this article is fierce...excellent writing skills and a lesson in it for every one of us..hardwork in our chosen fields can take us really far...We all knew before now that there was a chance Lampard could leave (same with Cole and now even JT)....and now that the chance has almost become reality...I will be sad when he leaves. Even though i have criticized his role in some of the matches we played in recently...Lampard is a great man and a legend...In any other field, he would have been given the long service honors and I see no reason why his shirt cant be retired...while I will very sad when he leaves at the end of the season...that sadness can be turned to a deeper joy if the club can find a role for him in the youth set up whenever he hangs his boots and chooses to come back home...Tribute to a legend indeed...super franky!!
layorh12
Great article...shame comments such as munich glory's have to ruin a thread. Where the hell does racism come into this. People appreciate what Lampard has done for this club...if you dont then please just dont comment in this thread....post your own article

@munich glory come on chill...drogba had to go because we needed to change our playing style which would have been more difficult had he stayed as our play was centered on his strengths

Thank you so much Frank. God bless you, I wish you the best. Frank is really a Legend but honestly he is getting old and we have young players that can be the new Lamps if given the chance just as Lamps was given the oppurtunity to shine.
SameX
To the author..thank you for a nice and very well written tribute to a richly deserving servant of the club. As to why i for example did not attempt to write something along these lines..well frankly i am quite in the dumps regarding how our club is being run right now and i just have this growing sense of futility about it all. But you sir have done a great job in detailing some of the rationale for acknowledging frank as a club legend. Well done and i hope you are spared the usual childish catcalls and insults that tend to follow when anything complimentary is said about lamps by some members of this forum. To lamps..best wishes and thanks for all the memories..hopefully you are allowed the chance to possibly tie or break Tambling's hallowed record before you leave Cobham finally and ride into the sunset.
GabeU
Btw, I think Mata has taken up the mantle from Lamps, he has become the brain behind this Chelsea team, he is not injury prone, he had about 13goals and 24 assists last season, he already have 17assists with 14goals this season. He will score more goals and register more assists than Lamps if he can continue like this and play till 34 or so especially with players like Hazard, KDB, Josh, Rami, Ba, Moses, Marin, Oscar, Chalobah and posiible signing of Isco, Benat, Taison if rumours are true. We will miss him but we have players that are ready to take over. Thank you for everything Frank, but as much as you worked hard for CFC we gave you the oppurtunity to become what you are, we believed in you and paid 11m to secure you, we paid you fat wages and we feel it is time to start another generation of players that will follow your footsteps and become Legends, they will become the new Lamps, Terry, DD, Cole, Cech, Makalele e.t.c... Go to America and enjoy yourself, you fully deserve it, you are a football Legend known worldwide.
SameX
djangbahevans, for those same reasons Lampard has to leave.
foreign_viewer
Lampard is part of what made Drogba successful. Lampard just makes what he does look so easy. And his leadership and presence makes Chelsea tick better.
blue#8
@munich glory i support you except the racism issue. Lampard is a great player and a legend for us just as Drogba was. The Drog was never given two years even though he wanted it so why should Lamps be different? Rule is rule guys
Cobham78
Its no news that we missed Drogba but we are coping without him and we will also cope without Lampard. This is simply being blown out of proportion because Lampard is english, was there any article that paid tribute or Supported Drogba's stand during his own contract saga? Prove me wrong with the link! Thank God Roman has decided to cut emotions away from his decisions.
munich Glory
the way things are looking, this team will need FL to produce some great performances to win any big thing this season. And we all know what happens when FL produces a half decent performance in 2 or 3 games in row. new contract talks, complaining about playing times, not to the management but to his best friends THE MEDIA. Just get used to FL dramas at least for the rest of this season.
EliteBlue
Samex whether we will have another players like Lampard, Terry, DD, Cole doesn't depend on skills of the players we have, it depends on their commitment, dedication, and willingness to bleed blue on the field like players you mentioned did. Only when you see them fight for chelsea badge with as much hart and passion as those players when were in the form, and constantly untill the very end, only than you will know you are watching their successors.
Luna
@SameX..could you just let it rest??!!!...loool....where you are comin g from is quite clear but could we just keep it like sweet good byes to a genuinely good man??...*wink wink!
layorh12
JohnnyOz makes some valid points although I can't agree that Lamps singlehandedly cost AVB his job, although I'm certain that 'player power' came into it and JT too may one day be held to account for it. It's not just AVB here, Scolari & Grant may both feel hard done by too & if my memory serves, even The Special One muttered something on his departure. Certainly sentiment was not to the forefront when Didier's time was up. What that actually tells me is that we have senior management at Chelsea who have a clear vision of where they want the club to be & are prepared to take unpopular decisions to get there. Assuming that their masterplan is a good one, that is actually good management, if it's not, then we will be deep in the brown stuff. In a ideal world Frank would get a 1 year appearance/ incentive based deal and play so well he'd get another one at the end of it. However we don't know what's really gone on at the club, both in terms of dressing room power & who was/ were the "shop steward(s)" & re Frank, was he offered a 1 year deal on reduced terms, did he demand 2 years and a pay rise? Truth is we may never know, Roman is a private person & silence can be bought. Having said all that, Frank is a legend, a true Chelsea hero & his "shrine" on my wall, over the TV, will stay there forever.
analooish
Good Article...Well written. We will say Goodbye when its right though,at the end of the season.
nelyvanile
i don't go along with this RA blames lampard for the sacking of AVB thing. how silly that sounds. so they're saying RA was forced to sack AVB against his will by frank. well if that was the case why didn't he sack frank and keep AVB? just not believable even at a soap opera like ours! and really when you look back surely RA must thank his lucky stars that someone, somehow made it possible that he sacks AVB and brings in RDM and we become european champions.
trueblue44
I admire love and respect everything that lamps has given to the club.fantastic servant and gave me some of my best memories as a supporter the goals at Bolton in 05 for the title and the penalty against liverpool after his mums passing the bottle he showed there incredible I just hope he goes out and beats the all time scoring record because the fans love him and he loves us absolute legend who deserves an extension but unfortunately won't get
Chelsea ken
This is an article of tribute to one of the greatest players to put on the blue shirt and not some blame game..lets keep the tribute comin and leave the blames for another day
Ken4CFC
Thank you Lampard for everything you ve done for us,Thank you for every joy u have brought to me and the chelsea universe..we have been through moments of joy and sorrows together and it only made us stronger together..your legacy in CFC will forever live in our hearts,as u leave CFC i would not cry because its over,i would rather smile because you happened #legend #model #achiever #goalmachine
Ken4CFC
I believe FL is the best box to box attacking midfielder of his generation. Thank you Frank Lampard for all you have done for Chelsea...you will be sorely missed but not forgotten. I hop you find a position within the organization after you retire. With that being said, I believe your dust up with AVB over shadows your current professionalism regarding the situation and the team. Furthermore, I can understand the club not wanting to pay the BIG wags for a midfielder that doesn't really fit in the 4-2-3-1 system. Also, to provide game time to Lampard would to further delay the development of Oscar, Piazon and maybe even KDB. So, it is relatively easy to understand why the club is letting him go....All I can say is "You can't play forever and thank you for your service". You will always wear CFC on your heart.
lamarochs
Now there's an article! Frank Lampard - Model Professional, Model Human Being, Footballing Legend - a true Chelsea Legend - end of an era - you'll not see another Frank Lampard for many years to come - Glad to be a part of these past 12 years!
parker26
Sorry..a bit of digression guys...latest rumour has it that Man city are trying hard to hijack the taison deal...as a result asking price has gone up to 13m with a 24 hour ultimatum for chelsea to pay up....why should we be bothered really?....we'll wait and see....
layorh12
I do like and agree with your points @analooish... and like I said in another article, let's not be too quick to run down and rubbish every tough decision made by the management, there is a whole lot going on behind the scene which we don't know about... I think the decision not to extend Lampard's contract couldn't have been an easy one for the management. And just to add that the way some of us take the board/management like they are a bunch of stupid idiots who don't even know what they are doing is a bit too extreme.... well, they definitely may not have a perfect grasp and their decisions may not have been spot on.... but my mind tells me these guys would certainly have a goal, vision and direction for this club and I don't think these guys are as dumb as some here paint them to be... I also don't believe in the gloom and disaster some believe the club is heading towards.... I just believe all will sort out and be well!!!
Latunvic
Thank you BLUE AND WHITE ARMY for such a great article. I really hope Frank will beat Tambling's record by the end of the season, and score the winning goal(s) in another finals (let us pray). And I really wish Frank a happy wedded life (I read somewhere he is about to tie the knot with his fiance) and get a few boys, maybe someday we will get another Lampard to wear the proud blue jersey. Now it is really hard to say good bye, isn't it? Thank you Lampard for everything
Gaban
Its really sad that CFC doesn't want to keep Frank in the squad, he is a true model professional and I'm sure young players would benefit from him, even if he wouldn't be a regular anymore having him in the dressing room would help out the youngsters...
Tiraspol
if you are chelsea fc fan, you like frank. Simple as that!!!
che-l3k1
I feel sad too.. I wanna cry.. I know he had to leave sometime but i just can't explain the deep sadness i feel for this..
Carloss86
I can bet my ass that Chelsea will hand over the number 8 shirt to some nobody like Taison!!!!!!! in the summer.
KAKUfrank
Lamps is legend, one of the best that wore the blue jersey, if not the best, but at the end of the season it is time to say goodbay to super Franke Lampard. I wish young players like McEchran would have the character of Lamps, perhaps Chalobah has it. Nu. 8 should not be retired, but it should become like the nu.7 at manure, a legendery number. My new year wish was, that Neymar will be wearing a blue cfc jersey with the nu.8.
icebluelg
Great article btw, but the timing is not the best, it should be when he actually goes. For now he is still scoring for us.
icebluelg
one thing people should remember here that lampard is a legend and there is no doubt about it...he is one of the best midfielder in the world...scored and assisted lot of goals for us...and nobody hates him here everyne loves him here...but one thing laso people should remember that lamps is 34...he is n longer the player he used to be now...and when people are talking about his role as squad player...next seasn w will be having lot of younger players in our squad...haz mata marin oscar moses mikel romeu rami kdb josh piazon (taison isco benat)...if we sign them..and we dont know who else we will sign in sumer...so it woud be a big squad...so there won be place for lamps to get into the squad..because we dont want our young players not getting chance becoz of lamps...we dont want playrs like oscar isco benat if signed not getting chance enough...because this is our future and we have to build chlsea on their shoulder..the more theyplay the more hey learn the more they mprove...people are talking about how alex is using giggs and scholes one thing they shouldnt forgot is that alex is manu magers for so many years there is a stabality in that club...the managers knows how to use old and young players...the same cant be said about chelsea we dont have manager stabality...till we dont have a manager who is stable enough to manage chelsea for longer term such hing wot happen at chelsea....first we need a good manager who should be good enough to manage our squad poperly or else there is no point in buying youngstr after youngster and not giving them enough chance...
shlok27
@Kaku....Lol @somenobody,,,never underestimate any player, especially hardworking types like Taison
SameX
If we did not retire the #11 of great Drogba, why should we retire the #8??
SameX
Thanks for all the comments guys.
BlueAndWhiteArmy
What's the story with Taison? Why is half of Europe after a 24 years old Brazilian who has never been capped? If he was that good surely by the age of 24 he'd have been capped.
CobhamBlue
It is not and never will be in dispute that Lampard has written his name on blues'sands of time. Just like Drogba,Zola and the rest with exceptional services to Cfc,he will be fondly remembered. He has gone to the heigths of glory with Cfc,he was a prominent figure in the golden Cfc era, winning every winnable and i feel privileged in no small measure to be a supporter and a witness from the low ebb to this era. However, it will be silly on my part to feign sadness and downcast because he is leaving. For i see it that his legendary status and overwhelming contribution to the club in the past should share almost equal emphasis with his present relative incapability. Also,I have the believe that in hanging on and holding tight to the old and used, you lose the chance to get the new and updated. And moving on doesnt take away the legendary status, does it? Btw,this article with its beauty and superb articulation lost the chance of making me cry with its wrong timing. Should have made more sense and indeed elicits more emotions if it had come a bit later, say towards the last few matches of the season and besides, there may still be a contract extension, you never can tell.
Ohans
Thank you Frankie. Bye bye Frankie.
traykidd
Nobody can dispute about Lampard's contribution to chelsea. He gave his all to chelsea. He will defintely be a Legend and will always be welcomed to SB. @Kaku, I dont see any issue with providiing the No.8 to any player. That can be a motivation for the new player to outperform Lampard. He will try to sustain the level of performances so that we dont miss his performances when he was at peak. Dont call that action (if chelsea took tha approach) as insult...You cannot keep on retiring all numbers as the legends leave...
Blu_run
I don't agree with retiring the #8 jersey, but I think the Jersey #8 should be kept aside until someone deserving of it emerges, probably within the current team. I clamored for the same to be done to Didier's #11,before someone decides to call me a racist. Like I said earlier, ill keep my 'good bye' till the last game Lamps plays for CFC,he is still a pivotal member of the current squad.
nelyvanile
Why should we retire the #8? We didn't retire the #11, and perhaps we shouldn't have retired the #25, this numbers as nely said should be given to players that are worth it, the only time we can retire a jersey number is perhaps if that player dies on the pitch while playing for us (which God will forbid)
Desmondadonis
@Blu_run. You miss my point. I am not arguing for them to retire the jersey. However, the player should prove their worth to Chelsea before Chelsea decides to don the player the jersey. Ronaldo didn't start wearing Raul's jersey till he proved his worth to Real Madrid. The last thing we should be doing is giving Frank Lampard's jersey to a Taison that will be rotting on the bench.
KAKUfrank
Lets not blow the issue of honouring Lamps out of proportion. Retiring his #8? Why not we make im a statue in front of the Bridge. Am all for awarding him every due respect, but not in a manner that will be considered inordinate.
Ohans
@Des. Just to clarify mate,Gianfranco Zola's jersey was never officially retired. It has never been worn since he vacated the #25 jersey in 2003 as a show of respect. Players like Mata have worked hard enough to don the #25,that's if he isn't too comfy with #10.
nelyvanile
Should not retire the #8, it is a motivating factor for our youngsters to wear it
Gaban
I am disgusted I really am if anything Abramovich should boot Torres out and not Lamps. If our #8 does go it would be best to give him a leaving present as a thank you for his great 11 years service to our club.
Elbowz
The owner and board obviously better come up with something good to say Goodbye when the time is right. I'm riding the wave with decisions our Board and Owners have been making of late, and am sure so are many Chelsea fans. Let's hope it doesn't get to boiling point.
nelyvanile
Did oscar prove his worth before he was assigned the #11 shirt??
Ken4CFC
great article...FL08 - Legend.
Gian-Franco/Luca
Next season will be the first time I will follow man utd games closely. Lampard will be great there, enhancing his opportunity to be on that flight to Rio comes June 2014

People are getting everything wrong. Totally wrong. The only thing similar to Drogba and Lampard's situation is the fact that the have 6 months left. Other than that, every other thing is different. Drogba was the first of the 4 Musketters (Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba) to depart and we of course know all the reasons. He scored arguably 2 of the most important goals in Chelsea's history. The departure of Drogba was supposed to lead to this new way of playing football - which we have achieved, BUT HAVE RECORDED NOT SUCCESS IN. We've dropped out of UCL, probably won't win the PL (maybe we could have had a chance if we bought Demba Ba in the summer); lost the world cup and lost the community shield. What departure actually proved was we let quality (no matter how inconsistent he was) depart without actually having the ready made replacement in there of which we suffered THIS SEASON. What Chelsea should have learnt from that departure is YOU DON'T LET QUALITY GO WITHOUT replacing it. What irks me is we don't learn anything and what irritates me is we don't learn. Till today, Terry is our best center back. Till today Cech is the best keeper. Following the decisions in regards to Ballack, Drogba and now Lampard, will the CLUB BE STUPID TO LET OUR BEST CB leave next year without a replacement because till today - Luiz, Cahill, and Ivanovic are not better? Most likely, we will follow such decisions again. Frank Lampard has declined as a player. NO DOUBT. However, he is still the BEST CENTRAL MIDFIELDER (NOT DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER) in Chelsea for the PIVOT. Reason being we don't even have a CM that can play there properly in his absence. When Raul was leaving, they was a Higuain. When Dinho was leaving they was a Messi. The departure of Ballack to us to 2nd in the PL. The departure of Drogba took us to 4th in the PL. Can you imagine if Frank Lampard wasn't available against Everton? Frank has played for 12 seasons in Chelsea. He has a legendary status like a few players. Raul has gone. Del Piero left. Dinho, Pep and a bunch of other players left. It will be in Chelsea's best interest for him to leave in peace. Ferdinand is also in his last year of his contract. However, there isn't any circus surrounding his contract situation unlike Ashley Cole and Lampard at Chelsea. And yes it is disrespectful. How can Benitez come out in front of people and tell the whole world that Chelsea have informed Frank lampard and Ashley Cole that they'd leave in the summer???? Who does that?
KAKUfrank
Excellently articulated by @Analooish - couldnt have said it better myself :) and to a degree @eliteblue as well. Im not sure there is any "real" chelsea fan that doesnt love Lamps to bits (hes one of my fav chelsea players ever) but the issue isnt about whether or not Lampard is a legend, its about the club moving forward. In my view, RA and his cronies seem to be making the right noises and making the right purchases in rebuilding the squad. Long may it continue too....but i cant agree that Lamps is innocent in the way he goes about his business....like elite blue refers - he puts in a couple of decent performances and he starts getting the English media to fight his contract battles for him - let's be frank (excuse the pun lol) its not the first its happened either, he used the same tactics to get his salary upped to 150k. Anyway, im not jumping on the niceness to FL bandwagon in its entirety bcos Frank may very well be at Chelsea next season. Believe it or not, RA's negotiation skills have also improved over the last 10 yrs, esp as everyone and their grandma has been and are still trying to get him him to pay over the odds for every single thing. This may yet be a tactic for the club to establish what the market rate for FL and i reckon he'll get an extra years offer at the end of the season. We hope that FL (being the real Blue that we know he is?) will accept what's offered then. As if....what will happen is he'll get offered 70k pw at Chelsea for an extra year and the Galaxy will offer 125k pw on a three year contract. Lets see what choice FL (the true blue) will make...I already know
JohnnyOz
FL is and will always be close to chelsea fans hearts. he was part of our greatest achievments and Hopefully will become our all time top scorer. However Chelsea are now going in a different direction and clearly do not see FL in their plans. Now whats the point keeping a player when they do not see him in their future plans? Best thing Chelsea can now do is give FL the send off he deserves.

Well said Kaku...Its funny people think we have been moving forward transition wise. In truth we have taken one step forward and 2 steps back for the last 3-4 season of transition. This all started with RA obsession to play a different brand of football. We started buying the best top young talents out there into our youth system (most who are basically sold out by now, they never got a look in). The hiring and sacking of managers since JM,and interim managers resulting back to basics with the will power and determination to win from the likes of Drogba,Lampard,JT,Ashley,Cech and some few key signings getting us trophies. The truth is every time we have taken a step forward to build a team for the future,we take two steps backward by sacking the manager or selling a player who is older to replace him with a younger one. It really doesn't work like that you don't ease players out and replace them and say 'Hey! We are in transition'. Its a gradual process and it starts from down-up. Our youth system is great right now,we have top talents especially in the U-18 squad,if u haven't seen them play take time to visit Cobham for those close to the bridge, for Well said Kaku...Its funny people think we have been moving forward transition wise. its sad i love frank he has been great for us and we will miss him i wish him all the success in his future and when he comes back to the bridge for a half time walk around he will get a rightly deserved standing ovation, brace yourselves folks jt and ash wont be far behind him thats football we or anyone else cant stand still the club has to move forward
herefordchelsea
cech is our best goalkeeper, terry is our best defender, drogba was our best striker but lampard is not our best midfielder now,he does not fit into our new system and he is not a pivot player,he is just bein played in the pivot to accomodate him as he cant bench mata or oscar....with or without lampard if we are destined to win the everton game we will win it,he played against mancity, atletico, shaktar, corinthians and we lost all of those games...the club out of respect for cole and lampards informed them early enough that there contract would not be renewed due to certain factors, which is quite reasonable than the way many of us are paintin like they are bein bullied out of the club..
Ken4CFC
Again. You missed the point Kencfc. This whole Lampard and Cole nonsense didn't start until Benitez opened his yap in public. Secondly, why is it CFC that has their contract business all open in public.
KAKUfrank
We lost against man city because Ivanovic was red carded. Against Shakhtar we only have Fernandontscores as striker. Against Shakhtar Lampard was out injured. Against Corinthians Lampard had just come back from injury and lack of match fitness. So dont blame him mate
Gaban
What's the excuse for the Atletico game?

Kaku,no the contract issue has been there b4 rafa came, remember rdm talkin the situation in one of our early games??remember lampard talkin about it in the pre match conference before the moldova vs england game?? Its not rafa's fault, lamps has been talkin to the media all the while..cfc has it's contract business in public because the player involved and his representative have refused to shut their mouth up,they yab to th media at every given opportunity, using the media as tool to fight their contractual battle...how often do u hear about cole's contract issue?its only lampard this lampard that everyday(probaby 1 of the reasons cfc is not extendin his contract)
Ken4CFC
Gaban,am not blamin him for the losses,am usin those games to emphasize how irrevelant his presence is;and that what will be will be
Ken4CFC
Well, Kaku the point is Lampsy & his agent are not keeping quiet either... feeding the press with their versions of the story. There is a stark difference between what happend with Drogba last season, everyone knew that he was going out, but still there weren't any stories like these in the press... Even in the case of Ashley, there isn't any news out there apart from just the speculations which are bound to arise.. but point is that for the last 2 seasons, Frank has been picking up situations/games to up his game... when AVB was there he was utter rubbish, but once AVB moved out, he started to perform well... the same now... once the stories started out he has started to perform better... I strongly believe, that sacking of AVB left a bad taste for Roman.. he had to pay a fortune to bring him to CFC and had to pay another to sack him..... also considering he is not doing bad either at spurs... So whatever may be the fans feelings, I don't think Lamps will get the contract...
gankrish
the issue about lampard is just the english getting all uppity about nationality. lampard is a great player no doubt but he is not greater than the club neither is frank lampard greater than Raul at Madrid. The fact is that both lampard and chelsea has benefitted from each other immensely and if there should be a parting, it should done amicably without rancour. Thnk you lampard for your services. but we will survive without you and you will go on to achieve another milestone somewhere else.

Oh jeez...So was it Ballacks agent that yapped all over the media? Was it Drogba's agent that yapped all over the media? The Club has had a poor handling of situations pertaining to the club for a while now. @KenCFC I've noticed you find it hard to understand things broken down. What Kaku is trying to say is not who yapped about Contracts but how and when the imminent departure of Frank was announced . It came to fore front in Rafa's 2nd press briefing when he stated that Ashley and Lampard were not in the clubs plan for the future, only then did the media hawks start to chase Lampards agent and ask them questions regarding the situation. Yes the contract talk was always out there but not until recently did it escalate and that was after Rafa's press brief. Jeez.

I don't understand why you guys even compare the Drogba situation to Lamps...its two completely different scenario. The club didn't boot Drogba out he offered to leave Chelsea, as he presumed the time was right(leaving Chelsea on a high). The Club actually wanted him to stay, remember JT singing 'We want you to stay' on the tour bus of the Champions League and Fa Cup trophy? Remember Didier saying “I would have stayed if we hadn’t won the Champions League,’’ "That was the challenge for the guys who were in Moscow. We wanted to go back and win it. We did everything to do that. It cost us the league. But it was worth it. “Saturday was my last Chelsea game and it has been a fantastic eight years. To finish on a high with this Champions League final was the best of the best, la crème de la crème as we say in French." So Didier announced his own departure. Its totally different from the Lampard situation.
nelyvanile
nelyvanile, I just compared it to say that, the reports like him getting only 1 yr deal or no contract offer was not doing the rounds unlike the case with lamps...
gankrish
@nelyvanile,i have also noticed that you take advantage of every opportunity to slate rafa..ballack and drogba's contract issues where not escalated the way you britts and your media are blowin the lampards',ballack was not offered an extension he moved on,drogba wanted 2yrs b4 the CL Final but the club were only willin to offer 1yr so when we won the CL he decided to leave on the high...and now its lampard turn to leave and he has been informed by the club yet him and his representative have refused to shut there mouth up resortin to cheap pressure tactic and here u are tryin to pick out rafa as your usual scapegoat..if the head coach does not say what rafa said, who will??
Ken4CFC
I guess Abrahamovic should be the one to come tell us lamps is not in the club's plan..huh
Ken4CFC
@KenCFC, do you understand contract situations at all? "if the head coach does not say what rafa said, who will??" Are you a clown? Rafa is supposed to say what every sensible coach before him has said i.e. RDM and Ancelotti which is: "Their contract situation is between the club and the player and he knows nothing about it". Case closed. And you make laugh so much Ken4CFC. In one mouth people are saying Drogba's and his are the same situation. In another hand, you say Drogba was offered a 1 year extension. So the question then becomes why is the club refusing to offer Lampard a 1 year contract extension, but offered Drogba? Have they explained to Lampard at all? I also read you other post about Lampard not being the best CM for the double pivot, BUT AGAIN you missed my point completely. CheLSEA DOES NOT HAVE ANY CENTRAL MIDFIELDER for the CM position in the double pivot. Ramires does not come close. Distribution and passing ability which is KEY in the double pivot has Ramires scoring an F9. Lastly, I am Nigerian so this comment cannot be seen as being racist. Frank Lampard is an English player and has played for Chelsea for 12 seasons. Drogba is an Ivorian and has played for the club for 8 seasons. If you think English fans reaction to the departure of one will be the same as the other - then quite frankly the person is not reasoning properly. Before anyone misinterprets again - I did not say the clubs treatment of the contract situation. I SAID FANS AND PRESS REACTIONS. And before anyone starts blaming fans for reacting differently, they should reason as well. More folks of African descent would have felt worse IF DROGBA was leaving in the same way as Lampard. That doesn't mean they are racist. They just feel they have a stronger bond with Drogba than Lampard.
KAKUfrank
Just the other day, my co-worker looked at his son and said, "Son, you are all grown up at 12 now" and since you officially started supporting Arsenal (maybe when he was 5 years old) they haven't won a trophy. Imagine that kid is an English boy and started supporting Chelsea when Frank Lampard joined. The same kid is 17 years old today. Assuming he started building a ond with the likes of Lamps and Terry from 5, do you think his reaction to Drogba's departure will be the same as Lampard's? Lastly Lampard's agent has done nothing wrong. It was BENITEZ who was supposed to shut up that opened his YAP FIRST. After that, Neil Ashton ( I presume you know who he is. If you don't, he has a mole at Chelsea who continues to reveal every detail before Chelsea makes it public such as a.) Our UCL starting lineup against Bayern Munich. b.) Essien's injury in training camp during Ancelotti's second season c.) Our UCL starting lineup against Juventus d.) Knew RDM was going to get sacked e.) Hiring of Beneath Us before it was public.) Neil Ashton had an article and a tweet that Chelsea had decided to let Frank Lampard go. He had that tweet and article around the same time that Lamps was supposedly NEGOTIATING WITH THE CLUB to stay. So if the coach who wasn't supposed to reveal Chelsea's contract negotiations in public said they told him you were leaving and then a Chelsea mole who has been dead correct on all thing Chelsea writes an article about it, what is wrong with what Frank Lampard's agent said?
KAKUfrank
@kaku,i understand contracts perfectly well, rafa said it in good faith,he said it just to clear the air of uncertainty and confusion raised by lampard, lamps and cole had meetings with the club and have been informed they are not gonna be offered a new contract but instead of lampard to keep his mouth shut he uses every press conference he has to talk about chelsea not offerin him a contract yet,was he not also suppose to do what every sensible player would do?? -avoid the contract questions- but no,he keeps yabbin about it and it took the intervention of rafa to clear the dust lamps is raisin..come to think of it,wasnt cole also told he is leavin by end of season??how come we dont hear about cole?? Its lampard this lampard that...take it or leave it,if rdm was stil here he would have stil burst the bubble b4 the end of the season...i know u guys dont like rafa but does that mean he should always be the scapegoat when things dont go your way..drogba was offered an extension because the club stil felt the need to keep him as he was our best striker but in lampards case,he is not our best midfielder,he plays behind the striker as an attackin midfielder bt that spot is taken by Mata and Oscar hence he has to be moved to the pivot to accomodate him,he is not a pivot player, plus his wage which is a disadvantage(FFP comes to mind)..the club must discovered that the negatives of keepin lampard outweighs the positive..i get ur point about nationality and i agree with u,and i understand the fans(especially the locals) adore their homeboy but my issue is with the british media who is doin everything in their power to cause unrest and distraction in the chelsea camp with their daily lampard contract articles.
Ken4CFC
I feel a much more sense of security with ramires in the pivot than lampard, the primary duty of the pivot is to defend and he does that very well
