'If It's Football, It's Vital'

One of a Kind?

I recently read a wonderful comment from Sir Alex Ferguson lamenting his sides inability to score from the penalty spot.

Already this season he`s seen several of his players, including Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney miss.

Down at Stamford Bridge, we also have had our fair share of spot-kick misses with Eden Hazard and David Luiz springing to mind.

However, if he`s on the pitch, you have to be reasonably confident that when he steps up to take a penalty Frank Lampard will score.

Any pressure felt by a spot-kick taker doesn`t seem to faze Frank, who`ll ever forget that memorable Champions League tie, against Liverpool, when Frank had the testicular fortitude to step up, only hours after his mother had died, to bury a penalty past Pepe Reina.

But returning to Premier League statistics, you may be interested to know that Frank Lampard has scored 41 times form the spot, a figure only exceeded in the Premier League era by a certain Alan Shearer who, in his career, netted 56.

Now with Frank`s Chelsea career, apparently, coming to a close, we doubt whether he`ll match Shearer`s record, but like I said earlier, just seeing Frank stride up, with the ball in his hand, is an enormous confidence booster when it comes to penalty kicks!

The mentality it requires is something I can't quite imagine. Sure, it looks easy, but to get it right in such a consistent manner is very impressive, and it speaks to the kind of player that Lampard is. He's a real pro, and our younger players need to learn from him while they can. Talent will only get you so far. While we're on the subject of PKs, I always enjoyed watching Ballack take them. I think he missed only once at CFC, but I'll never forget that outrageous one he took against Bremen. I believe it was his first for the club. Over the years, Frank has had some great ones too, but he's certainly more interested in converting. Style comes second, as it should.

I knew we wouldn't get past 2 days without an article praising Lamps ;)
@Mq
Having Frank as our designated PK taker is a luxury we chelsea fans have taken for granted over the years. Those who think it is so easy only need to go back to the Champions league last year and see who is included in the hall of infamy among those who missed critical PKs that lost their teams crucial ties in the tournament; it includes Messi, Robben , Ronaldo, Schweinsteiger to name a few. Also as Lamps heads out we need to groom a new designated PK taker and honestly David Luiz has lloked the most consistent and assured on the lot after lamps..he will have huge shoes to fill though.

Lampard is staying for another season.Think about it this way.He wants to go to Brazil for the World Cup(although I doubt if England will qualify).Surely,he can't move to the States next season. Our board is not as thick as we think. They'll give Lampard the contract he deserves.

lamps article again.are people being paid by lampard to make sure he gets the contract enough of this one player worship.its really a shame .

Emotional blackmail.

His penalty stats is very impressing, and I tell u this penalties have saved us numerous times than we care to think, lamps is a player we'll only appreciate when he leaves, our magicians are no where near him and will work there sock to pieces before they are mentioned in the same breath as him, I'll be sad if he leaves, but we all know a player won't play forever no matter how much we love them

Absolutely a confident booster. Yes, he did miss a few, some are crucial ones (well, every penalty is important), but with him, I wont shut down the TV or went to the other room hoping all is well. Haha. Remember that West Ham game? He got to retake the spot kick THREE times, and scored all of them.
Gaban
Ken4CFC... I disagree the greatest penalty take I've seen in a Chelsea shirt is Franck Lebouef... He only missed 3 times.

Guys kicking a dead horse isn't cool. Like it or not the man has earned his stripes at CFC and unfortunately for him is bowing out at the end of the season. The least we could do is celebrate him before he takes his leave, right boys? I say give him every opportunity to increase his goal tally because we all know by now its bye bye Frankie.

When I see Frank carrying the ball to the penalty spot, I already start celebrating the goal...

@ Gaban, I remember the West Ham game, I don't think any other player would've done that...

One recent pk that sticks out to me was his take against Napoli last year - balls. of. steel.
