Cole Reaches 100 Caps!

Tonight, Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Ashley Cole will start for England, thereby winning his 100th cap.

Cole becomes only the 7th England player to achieve this milestone, following in the footsteps of:-

• Peter Shilton - 125 caps
• David Beckham - 115 caps
• Bobby Moore - 108 caps
• Bobby Charlton - 106 caps
• Billy Wright - 105 caps
• Steven Gerrard - 100 caps

However, once again the tabloid press have brought up the insinuation that Cole is a player who divides opinion, courtesy of his off-the-pitch antics, something which Cole swept aside at his post match interview, remarking,

"I don`t want to keep on about wanting to be loved."

"I`m here to play football and I want to win trophies in an England shirt."

Cole, however, has been stuck on 99 caps for a while, having missed a couple of internationals due to injury, but that has seemed to work in his favour when it comes to providing some illustrious opponents for his 100th cap, with Cole further rremarking,

"They are one of the best teams you can play against so to win my 100th cap against them is going to be amazing."

As a young lad, like most of us, Ashley obviously had ambitions, but the left-back is honest enough to admit that he never dreamed that he`d get as far as he has, commenting,

"From being a little boy in the East End, you never think you would get a chance to represent your country."

"I am proud, privileged and overwhelmed by how many times I have played for England. I hope it doesn`t stop there."

With Leighton Baines coming up on the rails, Ashley knows he has some serious competition for that left-back spot and it will be interesting to see how he gets on,

But, in this game of ours, perhaps the highest praise you can get comes from your fellow professionals, Steven Gerrard, who has always received his fair share of stick from Vital Chelsea, has stepped forward to give his views on Cole, remarking,

"When Ashley marked Ronaldo he was superb and had him in his pocket."

"There aren`t too many defenders who can say they`ve ever done that."

"If the crowd takes a moment to think about what Ashley has given in an England shirt over the last 10, 12 years, it`s been phenomenal. He has been probably the most consistent player I have played with."

Praise indeed and with Stuart Pearce, a very accomplished left-back himself, suggesting that Ashley Cole is the best left-back England have ever had, we can only hope that Ashley Cole, tonight, gets the welcome he deserves from those inside Wembley Stadium.

the crowd should give him a standing ovation in recognition of his 12 year service (i won't hold my breath).. he is the only English player that never suffered a dip in form throughout this period. he has maintained such a level of consistency. well done Ash!!

No one deserves this achievement better than Ash...100 caps from 100 starts - just unbelievable.... Congratulations Ash - long may it continue and if you keep your game at the same level, Baines will remain on that England bench for the foreseeable future lol

It is rather sad that Steve G has to be appealing to the English fans to accord Ash the recognition and basic respect his playing career for the three lions richly deserves.

english fans r sooo deeply divided. even tho a player plays for a rival club, they hve to get behind him wen he plays for their country

Well its the passion must fans feel for their clubs that leave the support base for the 3 Lions very divided. I can't say I'm innocent to be honest,my dislike for players that dawn the Jerseys of rival Clubs tends to translate to the National team. As you grow older you get more matured and see things from a better perspective. Ashley shouldn't care about who likes him or hate him, regardless of what they feel about him, they recognize he is a top talent and very consistent as well. Congratulations Ashley.

Say what you think about Cole personally (I think he's hilarious and generally a good guy), but as a professional it's difficult to find any faults. He deserves all the credit for making 100 caps. Wonderful, top pro, and we're so lucky to have him.

AC has always produced for his country and will be pleased to have reached the century. Feel Baines will soon be the man in possession of the position though. Thanks for all the effort Ashley and congratulations on the ton. Cap it off with a goal.

Great game....good morale boosting win for England.. Wilshere was outstanding, great performance from the lad... I have always maintained that England has the talents to make a good team, all that is needed is a good coach who can select the best XI and employ the right tactics... Exciting times ahead for English football I guess... the U21 thrashed Sweden U21 yesterday, senior team defeats Brazil today.....

I have seen Paulinho both at the CWC and today's friendly and for me I can safely conclude he shoud please stay away from chelsea....its not the type of player we need...he is just another stucky DM with zero passing range (far terrible compared to Mikel who most chelsea faithful are still unhappy with) and also slow....he can happily go to man city.

Great display by the 3 lions...Wilshere is definitely a gem,top talent, that lad. A great goal by Super Frank Lampard as well. All Chelsea players put in a good shift(Luiz,Oscar,Ramires,Cahill,Lamps,Ashley) except for that mistake by Cahill.

Well Scolari has his work cut out for him. Great famous win for the three Lions who frankly deserved to win. If Scolari knows that is good for him it is time to lose Dinho and Fabiano who are well past it and no longer national team material. Neymar once again lots of flash but little substance. Wiltshere will be a really special player as he gets more mature..what a player..and then Walcott absolutely had Luiz Adriano for supper. Once again good Ol Lamps chips in his customary goal. No one should say this was just a friendly. Scolari himself said before the match that Brazil were not seeing it as a friendly but rather that their World cup preparation has now begun..their first run out will certainly not encourage the Selecao faithful because they looked rather ordinary today and but for Julio Cesar the score line might really have been embarassing.

Kindly enlighten me folks. I didn't get to watch the England vs Brazil game but want to find out if AC was handed a commemorative Cap in Glass same as the one Lampard was given on the occasion of his 100 cap for the country.

I am not sure what match you were watching Foreign viewer but even Phil Scolari himself acknowledged post match that the Three Lions were the better side. I have not seen one football expert or pundit commenting on that game who agrees with your opinion and several of my Brazilian pals were absolutely dissapointed by the showing of the selecao though they acknowledge that this is Phils first game in charge and so there is considerable room for improvement. If that is your idea of better football i am sincerely hopeful that chelsea dont play "better football" but actually start getting results. Last i checked the whole point of the game was to score more goals than the opposition.
