'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sparta Prague 0 Chelsea 1

In a game that won`t remain in the memory banks for too long, a solitary goal, late-on, from Oscar, on as a substitute, gave Chelsea a valuable first leg lead.

Team News - Rafa Benitez showed just how serious Chelsea were taking this competition by selecting a strong starting line-up. The only changes from what might be considered the strongest starting eleven available were the inclusion of Ryan Bertrand and Marko Marin. Frank Lampard captained the side with John Terry on the bench.

First Half - With the action having got underway in inclement weather, Lampard drew the first save from the Sparta Prague keeper, Tom Vaclk, with a shot from the edge of the box.

A fine ball from Marin then saw Eden Hazard drill a cross right across the face of the goal but nobody was on hand to turn it in. Hazard had started the game well with a full array of tricks and flicks on display.

Our hosts, just past the quarter of an hour mark, created their first opportunity when a cross from Ladislav Krejč' found David Lafata but no shot was forthcoming to test Petr Cech.

After a bright start, meaningful action then became something of a scarcity. But, with something close to ten minutes to go before the break, Sparta should have gone ahead when a loose ball, fell invitingly for David Lafata but the striker shot wide from just six yards out.

Marin, showing glimpses of why he was dubbed the German Messi, combined with Juan Mata and Lampard to create a chance for Fernando Torres but it all to no avail as the striker got his feet in a muddle ad was unable to get his shot off.

Relying on the counter-attack, after soaking up Sparta Prague possession, Lampard chancing his luck from thirty yards out saw his effort comfortably saved by the keeper.

Second Half - The second forty-five minutes started with Lampard finding the shins of a defender with a free kick as both sides looked for that vita opening goal. Cech was then forced into a save denying Matěj Hyb who had unleashed a shot from distance before Torres fumbled another good chance with a too heavy first touch.

Mata, becoming more influential hit the ball over the top of the Sparta defence but as Torres went to hit it the defence smothered him and Marin saw a shot blocked from his lay-off. With Marin enjoying his best display in a Chelsea shirt, Rafa Benitez decided to replace him with Yossi Benayoun.

Was the substitution designed to put some energy into what was, so far, something of a listless display?

Chelsea tried to inject some life into the game but Lampard`s header was snapped up, easily, by the keeper before a shot from Torres went for a throw-in, it was fast becoming that sort of night.

With fifteen minutes to go, it was hard to see where a goal might come from. But an inspired, or should that be a common sense introduction, saw Oscar give us that crucial away goal, although many might have felt that Mata was unlucky to make way for the Brazilian.

Oscar`s goal was beauty personified with the youngster skipping past a tired looking defender before beating the keeper with a cool finish. Oscar had been on the pitch for roughly 20 seconds .With the goal lead Chelsea, quite easily, saw the game out.

Chelsea - Cech, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Bertrand, Ramires, Lampard, Marin (Benayoun-68), Hazard, Mata (Oscar-81), Torres

Unused Subs - Turnbull, Ferreira, Ake, Terry, Cole,

Chelsea Scorers - Oscar (82)

Chelsea Yellow Cards - Cahill,

Chelsea Red Cards - Nil

I was please with Marin and Bertrand too, but Oscar stole the show for me. It's a good away win. I think we should take this competition seriously but shouldn't stop us from keeping our third position though.
BOTUM
Third position in the premier league, i mean.
BOTUM
It took a while but at least Benitez made the right move in bringing Oscar on.
Squig
Mata & Rami are tired. They should not play any match till next Sunday against City.
SameX
Oscar goal was sublime, it is a goal that put torres to shame. Lord have mercy and make us achieve top3 in the league
Desmondadonis
Azpi, Iva, Torres and Cole should not take any part in Sunday's FaCup game. They should rest.
SameX
samex,that is wiishful thinking mate, rafa will play them for 90 mins in our next game on sunday. Just pray they don't get injured, considering that mata is just recovering, he shouldn't have played for that long today as he is our life line we ought to protect him more and try to get his form back
Desmondadonis
We need to ship Torres through whatever means...its confirmed, he is finished...sell him to any half willing club let them pay whatever fee over 5 seasons similar to balotelli...we were poor on the night and we have been poor for some time now...but in the last two matches we got the results...Rafa remains clueless to me and m not sure I have seen any chelsea team play this disjointed since the Roman era...good result in the end, but I have my fears and while I honestly do not care bout wat happens in the europa, I fear for our top three finish...our play has been shocking bad for close to 6-8 games now...Good Lord, I pray we make chanpions league.
layorh12
Rafa should play- Cech- Paulo-Terry-Cahill-Ryan- Luiz-Mikel Moses-Oscar-Hazard Ba on Sunday.
SameX
How useless is Torres now. To think what this guy earns, it's daylight robbery. Seriously.
BlueABS
In the 2nd leg, he should play: Cech- Paulo-Iva-Cahill-Ryan- Mikel-Lamps Moses-Oscar-Yossi T9
SameX
And play Cech- Azpi-Terry-Cahill-Cole Luiz-Rami Moses-Mata-Hazard Ba against City.
SameX
does any body know how many mre years are left on torres contract?
Number#25
and FT9 actually earns 175k a week...how is he able to spend the money without feeling guilty?...meen we need to ship him...and I sincerely hope tubby has already started packing his bag too....we dont need drama..
layorh12
@Layorh2 Carlo's team in his second season, during 'bad moment' 2.0 played much more worse than this. You should be happy, things could be worse. Btw, United play more scrappy than this atimes but are still on top of the league, Why? Cos they have strikers that can produce magic moments like Oscar did today, who do we have???? TORRES!!!!!
SameX
CFC's downfall started the day we splashed 50m squids on a finished T9. We wasted that cash. DD was no longer scoring, our board felt the right thing to do was to buy another CF, they forgot Anelka, Kalou and Sturridge were still around. We were supposed to use the cash to get true wingers that will stretch the play and provide quality crosses for our strikers. DiMaria, Gaitan, Sanchez, Johnson were all available for peanuts. Ahhh!!!!! Roman needs Hiddink by his side.
SameX
Off Topic, 1) Did any of you read Piazon's interview, it feels like he never wants to come back to English game, 2) Lazar Markovic has not signed any pre-contract.
B2K420
^^^@sameX..you have a point I guess...this whole thingy is getting me depressed seriously..from the team's overall performance to torres....I mean this team is playing like they dont have a coach..and its only todday's match its been that way for close to 6-7 games in my eyes....**sigh sigh...what exactly has rafa done?..what is he doing?...what has he changed?...and why do folks here say he is world class....reality is far from some people here....i am sad!
layorh12
@B2k40...I dont believe Markovic..something is definitely up between him and chelsea and the all parties involved are obviously keeping it secret...and how can you say Piazon does not want to come back to chelsea?..i have read the interview and all he said was that he was not getting minutes here and its dificult for a youngster to break into chelse first team..he needed minutes and malaga is the best option for him now and he likes the city and food...he dint say he dint wanta come back...no false alarms please!
layorh12
and while marin is a decent player...I dont think he'll be a key player for us..he is too light weight...'ll take kdb over him next season.....maybe marin can be loaned of kept for depth and capital one cup matches...m sure he is on small wages.
layorh12
@layorh12: http://espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1340011/piazon:-life-at-chelsea-was-%27difficult%27?campaign=rss&source=soccernet&cc=5739# >>> Piazon "Here almost everyone speaks the same language, it is easier," he said. "Also the fans are warmer, like in Brazil. "Leaving was the best option. The atmosphere was difficult. There was a lot of pressure and it was difficult for a young player to be able to play. I want to play and have opportunities to grow."
B2K420
^^^nothing in that statement suggests to me he does not want to come back....
layorh12
yes he is clearly not happy he was not playing and he likes malaga city...but he dint say he does not wanta come back to chelsea...its your own insinuation...
layorh12
Gotta say, I thought we were terrible today. Very fortunate to get out of Prague with a win. I'm happy to get it, of course, and I was pleased to see Marin get a start. He did well--one of the few who played with any sense of purpose at all. And I think layor is way off the mark saying he's too light-weight; I saw Marin knocking players over, so take that as you may. Oscar's cameo--you can't ask more from him. But those players aside, we were extremely average. I thought Torres was shocking. Mata looked tired. Hazard played too many sloppy passes. Same for Lampard. Same for Azpi. We were all over the place. Must do better.
RadioactiveD
@Radio...do you honestly see marin becoming a major player for us??....i dont see that...decent player like i said.....but I dont think he'll have a career here..quite frankly...except he is content with once in a while cameos....he wont be a starter for us...like i said, I watch KDB most weeks and i will take him over marin any day....is marin even as good as SWP?...I am not sure...we'll see what happens in the summer.
layorh12
Did I say that, layor? I said I disagreed on the subject of him being too small to make an impact. I think with the competition he's got, it will be difficult for him and ultimately very unlikely. That said, he can absolutely make an impact as a sub and as a sometimes starter. Such players are important and they provide the depth we're lacking. And to compare him to SWP is indicative only of your preoccupation with his size. He can actually cross the ball unlike SWP; he's also better on the ball. Now, I like KDB too, but I don't really see him as a winger. I'd love to see how he could operate as a CM. Good long-range shot, good range of passing, very clever. We could use KDB now, but not in Marin's position. I see no point in it.
RadioactiveD
Lamps wants to break the record so much that he forgets he is a midfielder, he keeps shooting @every oppurtunity.
SameX
Marin had a brilliant attitude today..dont get me wrong..one of the very few who wanted to play and like i said he is a decent player from a pure footballing perspective..but i dont see him getting a lot of minutes here....he will always be behind other players in that position......
layorh12
@Radio...for KDB to play as a CM, he'll need to work EXTREMELY hard on the defensive side of the game...he is a typical offensive and flair player who is lazy in terms of hard work to recover the ball...hence my preference for him away from core midfield role, but on the wings (not as a traditional winger) as he can drift in (similar to kagawa)...to act as a schemer when needed....as for marin...yes we can keep him for depth...but will he happy to play that role?...he has germany national team ambitions....I dont think he'll agree to cameos and starting a small number of games..I dont think he'll be here for the long haul....
layorh12
and @Radio, if you check my first post, I did mention we could keep Marin so depth...he is not a bad option to have...he is a decent player.
layorh12
**keep him for depth..sory for the typo
layorh12
Merlin is really taking things personal..looool...he has removed torres from the man of thr match site poll....loool....i am sure he knows if torres is on the player list, he always wins even when he plays like a baby!!!....lol
layorh12
Marin and Hazard combined pretty well for the 1st 15-20mins of the game,looked fresh and had great movement off the ball. He is not as light weight as people make him out to be,he bundled a player twice his size off the ball. Its not really about the size,its the technicality and brilliance this small players possess that give them that extra nod. Yes maybe Marin might not get as much minutes at Chelsea,but based on his performance today,I believe he deserves more minutes on the pitch. Ill take him over Bertrand on the left wing a million times.

@Nely...hell!!!...'ll take him over Bertrand too anyday...but for me, I am already looking beyond this season...although you never can tell...but I do think Marin is probably just a level below a starter at chelsea...we'll wait and see...sometimes with more confidence, certain players can defile the odds, I hope he falls in that category..like i said we'll have to wait and see...having said that...I still expect marin to start the second leg....more minutes will benefit him immensely
layorh12
SameX, Carlo's team in his second season went up to Old Trafford with a chance to go top of the league with 2 games to go. What are the chances of this teaming getting anywhere close to that achievement?
CobhamBlue
Carlo can't even win the French league with all the money he's wasted at PSG. Roman was correct to sack him.
foreign_viewer
@Layorh I certainly do think more minutes will benefit him.
nelyvanile
foreign_viewer, He is winning the French League and has one foot in the QF of the Champions League. He never finished below 2nd in the Premier League and Chelsea have never looked like finishing that high since. Of course Malouda was in his prime then. None of the new signings are yet to reach the level of Drogba, Malouda & Anelka in 2010.
CobhamBlue
@Layorh I certainly do think more minutes will benefit him.

My god this europa league is bizarre Napoli lose 3 0 at home atletico Madrid lose 2 0 at home.its not the big teams to worry about its these unknown teams.on to tonight's game in terms of how awful the performance was great result for me Marin was our best player.the match was so bad that when he subbed him I felt like turning it off.torres enough said didn't know he was a central midfielder that's where he was most of the time tonight

Here's a good one:
Oscar Pistorius has murdered his girlfriend.

last night the best player on the pitch marin got subd by the best player off the pitch yossi....that showed how tactical genius our manager is...replacing a livewire with a deadwood...the same tactical genius used to play ryan on wings for whole 90 minute in previous matches who was doing nothing for the whole 90 min...and he still never used to subd him...and last nigh when marin was playing better he replaced him with mr deadwood yossi and kept the assshole torres on the pitch....tactical genius...woww..raafa is defntly a tactical genius...
shlok27
Rafa is a tactical genius...."RIPLEY'S Believe It Or Not"....the guy defently deserves his place here...

When I berate rafa benitez, folks here would think I hate, when everybody was complaining about torres and him being a waste of space, see what rafa came up with in the post match analysis, do u think this man will play Ba ahead of torres in an important game like the city game? www1.skysports.com/football/news/11668/8500899/Rafael-Benitez-says-Chelsea-must-be-more-clinical-following-victory-in-Prague
Desmondadonis
Focus on the comment section in this link, then you'll all see that our standard footballing wise is in the gutters. Even from fans who are not VC members. And someone would use his office's internet connection to feed us crap called comments about how boring mourinho's team play and how his team parks the bus. I'll take mou's style of play over whatever brand of football rafa is making us play!! Oh my chelsea, what have decended into? www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/281001/report

Goal was relief but i was not thrilled by the performance. awful to say the least . we simply cannot pass and keep possession !!
Blue Krusaders
Never watched the game,so i cant comment much.but i saw the highlights and that oscar goal was beautiful,good movements,vision and goal well finished.

we should be doing far more than we are doing right now with the talent we've got despite a lack of depth and having to play torres, but we are far from the potential of this team....Benitez is soooo clueless...its as if the team dont train...just plain pathetic!
layorh12
^^^ for all the bad publicity it might generate, I think we might be better off sacking tubby now...put in steve holland and the u-21 coach...till the end of the season...we need a reaction from the team...it appears its not only the fans that hate tubby I honestly do not think the players like him either....with tubby in charge, our chances of finishing top 4 looks a lot slimmer than when he is gone....the guy is a frog!
layorh12
^^^apologies for using an offensive language but this is soo frustrating and nothing is being done....we are gointa continue watching the team play like this and simplY HOPE we somhow acheive top 4....I simply do not like that strategy.
layorh12
Oh my God! Oscar opened another european title quest by scoring first? We are out!
munich Glory
^^^@munich...looool...stop being superstitious....and I do hope you have jinxed it..lol. Not like i seriously care about what happens in the europa though, we need to be very clear where the priority lies - that is a top 3 finish.

Inspired change by Rafa, deserves the plaudits for ensuring he made his changes and gave instructions that led to a goal :)
@Mq
Rafa won us the match with his inspired change.....Hope's he maintains this recent run of good results, haters can go hate and celebrate that hate like they having sex but we'll keep backing the team to success :)
@Mq
^^^^m backing the team and very deeply soo, but I hope if the team continues to play the way it has over the last 6-7 games, our chances of finishing in the top4 which is our core objective is extremely slim...so out of my depth of love for this young team of ours, if recent performances of the team continue over the next 4-5 games (max) and we continue to draw against teams that we normally wont, then I hope Tubby gets the sack...he simply does not deserve this team...noff said.
layorh12
Mq must have been the kid in the school playground that always caused the fight, but slinks away or cries to teacher when fists start flying. That comment is purely to wind people up. Give it a rest FFS lad.
BlueABS
A few games ago I complained about who is actually coaching our squad, it's definitely not Tubby and WTF does Xenden do?. Even longer, when Robbies defence hit the jitters, I wanted a pure defence coach appointed under him, similar to our goalkeeping coach. This squad is being trained (lightly it would seem) but there is no coaching going on as far as I can see.
BlueABS
*****''but i seriously think (not hope..lool) if the team continue to play the way it has over the last 6-7games''....that was a typo on my last post, so sorry, my bad!
layorh12
Mq....hahaa...you have got nice sense of humor..." Rafa won us the match with his inspired change".....LOL...this was th best humor i have heard after long time...

I'm amazed at the love being given to Marin. He was absolutely useless. Admittedly most of the players were poor but Marin has to grab the limited chances he gets. He totally failed once again. Another player not good enough for Chelsea. Can't see him being here next season.
CobhamBlue
Admittedly Marin wouldn't expect to be tackled by his own player! Torres & Marin what a team.
CobhamBlue
Rafa with his tactics and subs, makes me think that may be i was wrong to support his appointment. Sub Marin for Benayoun when Oscar is waiting...If he is lookiing to get a job this summer anywhere, better he does well with us in the time remaining

Rafa Benitez is really starting to get on my wick in his post match interviews! "We need to be more clinical" "if we create more chances Torres will score" of fu** off you FSW! You say the same things in every single press conference! It is really getting boring. Then he says it was Torres' job to play deep to being there defenders out this making room for other players to get in. Well that didnt work did it you muppet! Torres came deep the defence stayed where they are and we looked rubbish! Torres played so deep he wouldn't bust a gut to get back into goal scoring areas so rafa's tactics totally backfired. Marin and hazard are too alike. Marin is basically a poor mans hazard thus making him pointless in playing with hazard. Moses offers a lot of differnwt things so I'm looking forward to getting him back into the starting line up. If we continue to play 4-2-3-1 I don't see a future at the club either for ramires. He cannot play in the double pivot and his passing is totally useless at times and he just doesn't suit the 2 in midfield. If we want to get the best out of him we need to have a 3 man midfield. Rafa did bring Oscar on who them scored the goal so rafa has actually done ONE thing right since being here! Wow well done. Lets see him fu** up the rest of the games so we can once again be talking about how useless his substitutions actually are. This was a fluke and probably a phone call phone roman threatening him lol. So another usless performance with no passion and another example of rafa not being a motivator and just being a total prat and knob! Plus if this numpty can't get CFC to finish in the too 4 with hazard,mata,luiz,Oscar,Ba,Torres,cole,azpi,Cech,iva,lampard and terry then he really is worse than I knew he was. Come on you far Spanish waiter. PULL UOUR FINGER OUT THEN FU** OFF. YOUR NOT WANTED HERE.
Dave-David
If u guys think mikel, moses will come into the team and make this pathetic display of football go, then I guess barca have passed u the weed they were smoking "collectively" to u lot. The problem is deeper than what moses or mikel can solve and even deeper than rafa. The team lack cohesiveness, no self believe, no zeal, no passion,no sense of belonging!! nothing!! zilch!! Compare the UCL winning team under rdm to this and u'll see what I mean
Desmondadonis
The great irony in all this is, we have scored 101 goals this season, only Barcelona have scored more. And we have done all this with the most expensive flop in the storied history of association football. Imagine if Ba had been here all season never mind Falcao. Carlo soon discovered that Torres was done, AVB soon discovered that Torres was done, RDM new Torres was done, defied orders and was sacked. It will be interesting to see who plays at Man City.

When almost all chelsea fans are having the same opinion in different forums, and on tweeter, then u know something is really wrong with this team
Desmondadonis
surely Ba will play against city as he will be cup tied for the second leg.
MrDax
chelsea = 11 individuals! i will be over the moon if we can qualify for the CL for next season. as for this competition well i can not see us winning this or the FA cup.
MrDax
Anybody would have brought Oscar on for Mata. It was very obvious that Mata was tired, he did not really do anything spectacular all day, Oscar should have come since maybe around 60mins, instead he brought on Yossi and left Mata. Seems like he wants Mata to be injured.
SameX
desmondadonis what your twitter name? il follow you.
MrDax
@ cobhamblue chelsea scoring 100+ goals already shows that we have huge potential and with a few more additions and the right manager who the players will play for we can be back at the very top. But for that to happen means the board HAVE to get things right in the summer which does not fill me with much confidence!
MrDax
MrDax, I agree and we need to get back to challenging for the title. The Daily Mail have an article today showing that lowly Loserpool are due to be shown 5 times more on TV than Chelsea this season. They will be shown at least 21 times in the PL, we are only forecast to be shown 16. Without Drogba and title challenges, our star is falling despite our games being generally high scoring and Loserpool being on the road to nowhere.
CobhamBlue
Hear ye Hear Ye....we lose the game, it's Rafa's fault. We win the game, it's not Rafa's "fault"?? I mean WTF is it with double standard-bearing "experts" failing to acknowledge the obvious?? for instance, RDM brought Moses on vs Shaktar in the 81st minute and Moses scored the equalizer in the 89th minute through a headed corner and every "expert" was calling RDM a "brilliant tactician" for making an "inspired" substitution but now it's Rafa and he ain't being praised alike??
@Mq
Oh the effort of trying to educate fools, it's like giving money to the Joker
@Mq
As for Marin, bar the 1 or 2 times he created a 2nd last pass, he was scurrying around like a Rodent in a cage. All that running with minimal purpose, the guy is $hit and nothing better. Definitely understand now why he's been benched all along....pity we don't have depth
@Mq
I watched only 70 mins and it was unbearable even till that time...From what I see, we still try to play long balls...we dont manuever out of defense...we simply try to clear the balls which ultimately go to the opposition again...they start attack fresh...Instead, if we try to play oout of defense (even slowly), it will be better...Ramires was tackling very well, breaking plays, but oh my god his first pass after that is very poor...he either passes to the opposition or to vacant spaces...Torres was looking very weak, no power in shots, no physicality while trying to dribble...
Blu_run
Mq...i agree that rdm was poor with his tactics...i never liked it bringing in subs on 80 minute...but dont tell that rafa is better than him...infact last night rafa use of yossi ahaed of oscar is completly illogical...what does yossi provide tell me..you are telling that marin was sheet if marin is sheet then what is yossi...dead$hitwood....he is even worse..why was torres playing why didnt he was not subd what does he provide... dont tell me we dont had striker in the bench.. with him on the pitch is also like we are playing without a striker....tactical wise both were not good...but your arguments about rafa being a better tactician is compltly wrng...
shlok27
When some pple say it was a good match, hope d team plays the way...., Rafa won us the match, rafa is a tactical genius etc I keep asking myself, if it was d same match i watched. Rafa had only oscar on the bench good enough to play after bringing in Benayoun so wat was tactical abt d change. com on if torres was d coach, he would have done same. Now leavin cahill on the field after the yellow and stil commiting foul was a gamble that would have caused us if show a red. This team was average, showing nothing worthy of a CL title holder, little hope of maintaining d 3rd spot, incapable of winning the FA, with Torres as our only striker in EUROPA it will take a miracle to pass beyong AJAX if we scale this round. The defence was far below our normal team, i wonder how we will fair against ajax, madrid, spurs, inter, leverkusen, napoli etc My conclusion we are still far from having a team that we will all trust day - in, day-out this season (cant wait for season to end). i doubt if Mourinho can do the turn around many think he will, though personally i dont wish to see him back.
jim shimfe
@Desmond...: I totally agree with your above post "The team lack cohesiveness, no self believe, no zeal, no passion,no sense of belonging!! nothing!! zilch!!". ---------They don't play with desire, hunger, unity, have no faith in each other and themselves (remember how Mata passed the ball to Torres where he could have scored himself, Berty passes the ball to other players quickly as he does not want to be the one who losses it), play is slow, disjointed.>>>>>>Ba makes lots of runs but I have seen players like Mata/Hazard will pass it short instead of seeing Ba's run and putting a ball behind. He has to really wait for a pass from them. This is what happened to Torres, when he joined us he used to make lots of runs but players like Malouda never passed to him first time. Now Torres has lost confidence and become shiete and is at Chelsea just for the money. I just hope this does not happen with Ba. Our midfielders think it is their JOB to score goals, striker does not exist, pass to another midfielder or shoot instead of passing to the striker when there are no options then pass to the striker.>>>>We need to get a player who can pass the ball like Alonso, so we can play direct football, pass the ball from Pivot to Ba first time, then it will not matter if the other team has 11 players behind the ball. Direct football is the only way to beat the teams who park the bus OR your 11 players need to be good/play/CLOSE down exactly like Barca.>>>>When a team parks bus we become shiete there's is no two ways about it.>>>We need to find a solution on how to beat teams who park the bus quickly or forget about top 4 EPL finish.
B2K420
If you ignore idiots...they go away and never come back...but I am glad we won, I still value any trophy particularly one we have not won before...it was not easy for us in Prague so I will not berate Rafa too much except to say Yossi...come on...and we fired RDM for this Fat gluttonous lipid laden fool...that's all
Gian-Franco/Luca
My "argument" SHLOK isn't about Rafa's abilities or inabilities but rather why different strokes for different folks. Rafa's subs are poor no doubt, and some of his decisions leave a lot to be desired but the double-standards on this site are laughable. As for Marin I stand by my word, he didn't do anything that I'd write home about, hell that I'd tweet about. Torres had to keep playing because we had no sub, Ba is cup-tied remember??
@Mq
on the contrary somewhat B2K420 I saw us play good football and create good chances in the first 20minutes, those crosses from Hazard and Azpi needed a "quality" forward, a goal poacher. We had 18 shots at goal yesterday, definitely not from our own halfway line. There were moments when I questioned the teams desire but if you look at our stats in the last 5 or so games, our shots are never less than 15/match and we create countless chances that Torres wastes, surely to say the team lacks cohesion, no self-belief, no zeal, no passion is unfair for a team that's the 2nd highest scoring team in Europe (after Barca, even better than Madrid)
@Mq
I concur with Rafa saying we need to be more clinical because we are creating the chances, just not scoring as often. I agree with you about Ba though, our mids are too slow to time his runs and also about our mids wanting to score, but you can't fault them when they see "Super Frankie" taking shot after shot from the 30yard line. We glorify Lamps for goal scoring (forgetting it's the strikers job) but berate the team when we can't score more goals because our mids are acting after "Super Frankie"....
@Mq
@Mq: We don't need to play good football for 20 mins it needs to be till the end, against West Ham we had good first half and shiete 2nd, against Arsenal same. We are unable to play good footy for 90+ minutes every game. Chelsea should be able to do that as we are Chelsea not QPR.---------Shots on goal: How many of them were clear goal scoring chances?-------passion etc: I understand you don't agree with me but in my opinion I am not being harsh, it is the way they play not closing down people as a unit, chasing back, going forward, playing with energy, going forward with purpose, General team play is slow, like they don't want to be here------2nd highest scoring team: We scored 4 goals against Wigan but everybody knows it was not an easy game and Wigan had loads of chances if they had decent players the result could have been different. We can't CONTROL/DOMINATE games for 90+ mins that is why end up drawing or losing. Our defence is not solid please don't give me the stat, I have watched most of Chelsea games and I know how many mistakes they make that could have led to a goal.----------Ba: I think they deliberately don't pass to him first time as they like playing tikki-takka style. We need to start playing direct football to get the BEST OUT of BA.
B2K420
We are creating a lot for a central striker in form! BUT we dont have it in europa league! With Torres as our main and only striker we WILL NEVER WIN EUROPA LEAGUE! Great work form our board though! WE have to get Falcao! He will get straight in the first formation! He is exactly what we need.......FALCAO FOR CHELSEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
austriablue
^^^may be the deal we are trying to set up for Falcao to chelsea is actually cash+Torres and not cash+coutois....I hope the media is wrong on this one...Cash+Torres=Falcao will be perfect...Athletico is cash strapped so maybe they could wanta do the deal...plus they could feel they can still achieve somthing with torres with diego giving some competition...good Lord I do hope my proposition is true...we get Falcao and we still have Courtios...hmm....layorh, dream on...loool!!
layorh12
I hope so too LAYOR I'd even go as far to say we can meet Falcao's release clause+ Torres just to entice them to deal. We can't keep this guy beyond June 2013, we'll be killing ourselves
@Mq
we were lacklustre passionless and very slow , I think that rafa sends out a team not to get beat if we win then thats a bonus to him but we rareley take the game to the opposition, im happy we won but as a game we dont look like the second favourites for this trophy
herefordchelsea
@Mq...yeah I agree with you, even if we meet the buy out clause for Falcao...Having a sulking torres on insane wages in the dressing room will not help the team...so torres as a sweetner is perfect, I think it will be a win-win for the three parties involved...us, Torres and Athletico....with Falcao, Ba and Lukaku...I think we'll be good to go...while BA and Lukaku are offer physical strength (with lakaku also adding some mad pace)..Falcao gives us the total package and we wont overuse him bcos we'll quality back ups in Lukaku and Ba...if the board do not wanta bring lukaku back just yet..we can buy a cheap RW who can also double as a back up striker...but my preference is for us to bring back Kraken!!!!....like i said...i am simply dreaming..lol

I've been analysing our shots at goal/shots on target ration for a while now and it's about 65% B2K420 which is still pretty low but certainly shows the signs of chance creation are there. We can't blame the midfield if they adjusted to ineffective Torres by deciding to score themselves, likewise when they get influenced by Lamps goal scoring exploits but obviously they need to adjust to Ba's style, which to be honest is more suitable for Newcastle than Chelsea at the moment, he also needs to adjust to playing fast but short passes because we aren't "direct to Drogba" Chelsea anymore. Yes we still can't see games out but that's also been a confidence issue as much as a fatigue and probably more-so a Rafa issue. If I were him I'd work on ensuring that we 1) stop making more than 3 passes in the opposition 18, look up and pass to the person ahead to score 2) Tell our striker (Torres) to stay in and around the 18 area, the more shots he takes at goal the better his chances>>>just trying my best here, it's obvious he has to keep playing so it's best to make him effective 3) Tell Hazard and Mata/Moses to always play from the halfway line forward so we break incisively and pull defenders apart with 3 counter attacking options (LW, RW and ST) then 4) if Lamps is to play, it's pointless playing him in the pivot because he's never there, rather play him more advanced (10) behind the striker because he has no pace out wide, then interchange him with Oscar. Leave the pivot to Mikel/Luiz/Ramires and they also interchange 5)Start the same back 4 regularly, we playing better with Iva & Cahill adjusting to each other now. Terry's been awful everytime he comes in lately, it's no coincidence that under his "leadership" we didn't win any of the 3 games he played (drew Bradford, lost Newcastle, drew Reading)
@Mq
@mq...''2) Tell our striker (Torres) to stay in and around the 18 area, the more shots he takes at goal the better his chances>>>just trying my best here, it's obvious he has to keep playing so it's best to make him effective''...I am sure every single manager that has coached torres at chelsea have told him this, the truth is that torres at chelsea is irredemable...... and the Terry bit...I am afraid its looking like the begining of the end for JT...He has not been good lately quite frankly...the way players start to decline with age is sooo funy...it just starts unexpectedly, I wont be surprised is his contract is not renewed...lol

Quit dreaming will ya? Its cool to entertain dreams, but too much of it is unhealthy and make u worse off than usual.

Porres/Torrmented & Tubbster/Tub of lard OUT Jovetic / Mourinho In.... Falcao to Madrid/Citeh for 1 bazillion. Dont want a 27 yr old striker at chelsea at ridiculous costs no matter how good he currently is...we all know how temporary form can be in football...we must have learnt surely!!
JohnnyOz
Every fan entertain dreams in their own little world, but hoping this will happen under rafa is just too much of a reaction to the incessant heat in ur side of the world.
Desmondadonis
@B2K420 Do you know why we can't control the game for 90mins??? Its because Lamps is in the Pivot and Rami is too poor with the ball, can't even make a simple short pass successfully.
SameX
Ba's style: Drogba was a success at Chelsea because we played to his strengths. Torres: We never changed our style to suit his strengths (first time bullet balls/passes behind the defenders as we don't have Alonso/Gerrard).-----------Our midfield needs to play to Ba's strength i.e. direct football not the other way round.------Watch how we STILL boot it long to Torres who loses 99% of the headers and the opposition gets the ball.-------When team presses us high we kick long and loose the ball.--------If Falcao comes to Chelsea (which I personally have a issue with the price tag & we might offer Courtois to them as a freebie) he will be a massive FLOP like Torres unless the TEAM plays to his strengths or @Mq you will ask Falcao to change his style to suit Chelsea if that is the case than next year get ready for Flop Falcao articles.-------------------I agrees with your 5 points I will just add 3.1) Make front 4 defend better and help the rest of the team as sometimes they just don't track back. 3.2) Send Mata/Hazard/Marin/Torres/Moses/Oscar/Ramires to a school where they can learn how to tackle (old school style) even though Refs want tackle out of the game. lol
B2K420
Pivot players should dictate the rhythm and tempo of the game. They are suppose to keep the ball well, spray it around with accuracy and provide swift transition from defence to attack. Thats what Pirlo and Alonso do for their respective teams. Lamps is more of an advanced CM in the 4-3-3 setup, this is the same with Ramires, they are not pivot players. Mata has to come deep to spray the ball, Lamps cant do it successfully unless he is given much time and space on the ball (like against Wigan).
SameX
Lamps is getting old but he is still a fantastic player. If we revert to a 4-3-3 and play Mikel-Lamps-Oscar in midfield with Moses-Ba-Hazard in attack then we will see the best of Lamps. He will just keep things ticking in midfield with his short passes and score loads of goals as he will not be burdened with defensive responsibilities. Thats Lamps for you, but this pivot thing is making him a liability.
SameX
@SameX: I watched SP game and noticed Lampard was not closing down people 25 yard from our goal where as Ramires was doing that.-------I think it is team issue, Berty panics when he is in tight space, TERRY orders the goalie to kick it long as he might slip and Terry knows we are no Barca who can play comfortable from the back. Remember what Iva did when he tried to play from the back 2 goals to Swansea. Torres can't hold the ball for shiete. Against SP we were just kicking it long with no reason and lost the ball all the times.----------or Maybe you are right if we get Quality passers in the pivot then we might retain the ball better.-----I have watched some RM games and Alonso got assist/created CLEAR goal scoring opportunities with first time balls from the pivot. I just wish we get a young player who can do that and defend well as well. I have heard Benat is the next best thing to Alonso.
B2K420
@B2K - if we're not playing to Porres's strenghts then i presume neither is the Spanish National team who wont touch him with a barge pole atm...Party done for FT9 i'm afraid - time to go back home
JohnnyOz
If we are to continue with this pivot thing then we must play Mikel & Romeu more, bring back Josh and get a cheap, quality and experienced deeplying playmaker like Benat. Mikel-Benat can easilly do the job of real pivot players for us. Romeu-Josh will be their understudy. Rami can come in when we need his tackling, hard marking and his crazy attacking runs.
SameX
For now, I think we should move Lamps to CAM or SS as Mata's backup. Let him play with freedom behind Torres since T9 cant score goals anymore, T9 will provide space and assists for Lamps. This means whenever Torres is playing Lamps should be behind him. Oscar should come back to the pivot as he can keep the ball well, spray passes accuratly, tackles pretty well and he has the skills and pace to move the ball rapidly from defence to attack. Luiz, Oscar, Mikel and Rami should be our Pivot players till the end of the season.
SameX
Mikel-Oscar & Luiz-Rami OR Luiz-Oscar & Mikel-Rami.
SameX
agree with SAMEX about the pivot and also want you to note that for us to take that many shots at goal, considering we don't shoot much from afar (exclude Lamps) proves we are creating chances that just need a quality striker to finish them off
@Mq
It's so easy to criticize without any valuable alternative DESMOND lOl
@Mq
Yeah @B2K420 Benat is a great player, I have seen him play, he is fantastic, Del Bosque also rates him highly. I think he will do well in the EPL. Btw, he has a 20m Euros release clause and he is not willing to sign a new deal, I think we should activate it and land him. We were interested in him last month, but the whole talk went off suddenly, I think the board want to wait till summer so they can get him for less than 20m Euros. And maybe they also wanted Lamps to get more game time and score more goals so he can go in the summer as our all time highest goal scorer.
SameX
@JohnnyOz: I am not a Torres lover I am more of a hater, he did win the golden boot at the last Euros though. Torres needs to leave Chelsea now only if he wants to play for them ever again. He will have to take a pay cut. lets see if is greedy like Malouda.
B2K420
@SameX: Romeu was my first choice even though Mikel is better at defending than him. He was Rafa's first choice as well, this was suppose to be his break through season but unfortunately he got injured.------Josh is not good enough for Middlesbrough i.e. championship level how can he play for Chelsea's first team?------We did not sign him because we are waiting for the new manager, once we get new manager in the summer we will enter the bidding war for Benat.
B2K420
MQ....i agree with you that there are lot of double standards that are there going on here when it comes to certain players....as for marin i dont agree with you...if people like torres can get chance after chance even they flop then that guy needs to get more chance to show his worth...how many chance did he has got here...let him get settled properly and then you can see the difference....and regarding last night subs...he could have subd oscar for marin and cole for torres play lamps as ur front man because he plays there only...and cole as a your winger who would be great rather then playing yossi...its simple i think i could be a better tactican...
shlok27
Ladies & Gentlemen i shall be blunt, these are what chelsea need to do to gain glory again.1) Get Mourinho! Hate him or love him, he loves success and we need oscar and the new crop to fulfill their potential. 2) sell torres no matter the hit, he has sacked 3 coaches indirectly. Sticking with him is hurting him and us, no club will persist this much. 3) revamp the pivot, we have only 1 true pivot player and that is romeu. Now ramires has no future in the pivot, the bursting runs are suited to the right side of a 433 otherwise he needs to be an impact player off the bench. Now to the contentious mikel; can we play mikel as CAM? The answer is obviously no and unfortunately that is the only area you will witness him as a world beater. So what do u do with him? Well he cant play anywhere else and its not fair to bench him too, so sell him! 4 his sake and our sake. Luiz; has no bizness in the pivot, he has zero dicipline but a lot character. Mou could drub a lot of sense and fear into him to transform him to a n excellent defender. Romeu needs another chance, injuries hasn't been kind to the lad. Lastly buy a benant or any deeplying midfielder and this compartment is good for 3 years at least. 4) sell hilario and get a good backup; curtois wont be coming back unfortunately. 5) Attack- ship torres out he looks like a woman that has lost the will to live. I would have preffered cavani because falco fire has been dead recently. Any capable striker will do, there is nothing worse than torres and Ba as Ba-ckup. Then we are good
ishmoto
@mq, if it was another fan with a reasonable pedigree of arguements and debates I'll indulge him, but engaging in a debate with u, is like the proverbial saying of "trying to fetch water into a basket" not in a million years will u see reason. Now scurry back to wherever u sprinted from. Next!
