'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Which Two From Four?

Recent accusations that have since been strenuously denied by the club, relating to John Terry not being guaranteed a regular place in the starting eleven, has provoked a comment from Gary Cahill.

Cahill, almost a regular in the back-four now, is determined, despite the effects of squad rotation, to hang on to his starting place.

Cahill, a hero of that epic night in Munich, has remarked,

"At a big club there will always be competition for places, it`s only healthy. If you have an opportunity to wear the shirt, you do your best to try and keep it."

But, in your opinion, who do you believe forms our best central defensive partnership from the cast of four of Terry, Luiz, Cahill and Ivanovic?

cahill and luiz.....yaa they would make mistake but who doesnt...but for future prespective they are the one who should be playing regulary..

Terry-Cahill partnership, without a doubt...
Latunvic
Good conundrum to have - me thinks I'd always play Luiz in Midfield in the important games alongside Super8. My CB pairing would be obviously JT and Gary Cahill (even as Cahill is prone to the odd error), Ivanovic and Azpi can battle it out for the RB position. We can rotate when required to rest or for smaller teams, but this would be my first choice pairing
JohnnyOz
Based on stats its been Terry Luiz....but from my opinion and observation I would rather see JT pair with Cahill.

I actually think that David Luiz is a risk against stronger teams in midfield. It's been against the weaker ones that he's done well, not the other way around. Based on form and fitness, I'd play Azpi, Iva, Cahill, and Bertrand today, with DL playing in midfield alongside Mikel. On Sunday, I'd like to see Azpi, DL, JT, and Cole, with Mikel and Lamps in midfield playing behind Moses, Mata, Hazard, and Ba. That's a squad with a decent balance of strength and finesse.

Ironically we had this same discussion in the forums some weeks back,I think Radio brought it up...
nelyvanile
Yeah, I might have, nely. But it's fair to say that the issue of your ideal back four is a separate one from considering your opposition and issues like fitness and form. Unlike many, I rate David Luiz as a CB very highly, and I'd continue to start him there on most occasions. Pairing him with JT for now is the right way to go, as he provides the stability we need when DL bursts forward. Then again, our future CB pairing will likely be DL and Cahill, so it becomes an issue of possibly letting them continue to establish an understanding. But this isn't the time for such experiments. Rafa is under too much pressure.
RadioactiveD
Terry and Cahill surely. They both give some degree of confy whenever they re at the back for us. I enjoy Luiz anywhere, defense or midfield, but will choose where to play him between both positions based on the nature of the opponent. Against a physical side that tends to sit back,Luiz works well in the midfield. Hope to see him play with Ramires and Oscar someday in the midfield in a 4'3'3 set up.
Ohans
@Radio. I totally agree that this isn't the time for experiments and the wise thing to do would be to pair the players based on fitness and form. I do rate Luiz highly and I feel he is a diamond who is still rough around the edges and needs a smoothing out here and there. Cahill and JT have a certain understanding i like, both English players and both on the same wave length most of the times. There's no doubt Luiz can become a better defender than JT and a future leader for the club... But he needs some polishing to make him a sparkling diamond.

Nice post radio.i actually think the terry luiz partnership would make sense more.the terry cahill partnership will lack pace and i know both of them doesnt have the pace of Luiz.Luiz can cover for terry in terms of pace and i knw terry is a better defender and leader compared to cahill.
obimikelisdbest
boy oh boy! Certainly a good problem to have, keeps everyone on their toes..am so confused that i dnt even have a preference, hopefully the coach would make the best choice
Ken4CFC
Against city,i also think we should play disciplined players in our MF pivot.i fear city players will exploit the spaces left by Lampard bcos i know it's certain he's going to start.maybe a disciplined DM should start alongside our super8.
obimikelisdbest
luiz and ivanovic are strongest pairing.both have pace to burn.but terry and cahil together no.They have no pace, creativity and poor passing.look at our game vs Brentley they hold the ball backwards 4 long instead of quick moves.cahill need to improve tackling and position to reach luiz level.
mzee69
Cahill and Terry.... I think they complement each other better, as Luiz is still a bit error prone. That will come though.... I have a feeling we could well sell Luiz though and fast track Chalobah who I think is ready!
Splint1976
obi: I agree. We already know that Lamps will start on Sunday, so he'll need Mikel to do the grunt work. It will be a pretty immobile, slow midfield, which is problematic, but defensively Lamps needs someone who is disciplined. We continue to have issues with Ramires' best role. He isn't a winger but he often scores from that position. He's not a DM, and when you put him alongside Lamps, we're vulnerable at the back. Assuming Lamps does go, perhaps we'll see how a Mikel and Ramires double-pivot will work. I have my doubts even if they're both good individual players.
RadioactiveD
Part of what bugs me about the "error prone" argument w respect to Luiz is that we tend to focus too much on it. I blame the media, which hasn't outgrown its early impressions of DL as a CB. Cahill and JT have certainly had their own healthy share of bad errors, but we don't really talk about them. CBs will make mistakes, but how many of them can impact our play so effectively from the back? Plus, the reason he's caught out when he is shouldn't be solely blamed on him. If the manager encourages him to get forward from a deep role, someone must drop back and cover. That presumably will be Mikel's job if/when DL returns to a CB role.

Surely there are geniuses on this site and one of them is radioactiveD.cant agree with you more bro.
obimikelisdbest
Surely there are geniuses on this site and one of them is radioactiveD.you are very very correct bro.

Ivanovic doesn't "have pace to burn". He's slow. The Cahill and Luiz pairing is the best.

Cahill & Luiz.
B2K420
This season, as long as JT is fit, JT and Cahill is the way to go... We need JT's leadership and I just feel more comfortable with Cahill partnering JT than Luiz... I think we need Luiz more in Midfield for now than in CB, we have enough capable guys for the CB position. Next season we can unleash more of the Luiz-Cahill partnership....
Latunvic
I agree about Iva's pace. It's a problem at CB when we're playing a higher line--he has trouble getting back if we're caught out of possession. Same goes for JT, but w JT his positioning is usually so disciplined that he can recover. But not always. I think w any CB pairing you need a balance between brute power and a certain amount of guile. We had that for years w Riccy Carvalho and JT. The closest we'll get to that in the immediate future is w David Luiz and one of JT/Cahill. That's my opinion, anyway. Of course, you can always bring in Iva as needed, but I like him best at RB because he gets forward well in spite of his lack of pace, and against less pacy wingers he can really be successful. He's still a great defender and an aerial threat. Azpi, however, just keeps getting better and better. I'm frankly shocked by how much he's improved since the start of the season.
RadioactiveD
Luiz's best attribute in midfield is his ability to play the long pass, which he can do from a CB role. His short passing is decent, but his shot in open play is awful. His positioning in midfield is also fairly aimless, so I don't really see where the hype comes from. Lamps gets us goals and Mikel can provide defensive stability and keep possession on the ball.
RadioactiveD
Cahill-Terry - I think Cahill is fast becoming our best CB currently. Hes been great since he came in and is probably the least error prone out of all of them. Great long range shot and very dangerous from corners too. Terry has to get the nod based on experiance and that he provides the on pitch leadership. Errors have crept into his game but he still must be considered one of the best around.
BlueKiwi
After today, I don't see how anyone can say Cahill and Terry. The pairing is too slow, too ponderous.
RadioactiveD
Terry and cahill is the strongest if we are playing a physical team, but if we are playing a technical team then I'll go for terry (if fit) and luiz, they are the best CBs we've got.
