'If It's Football, It's Vital'

City (a) - Rafa`s Thoughts!

A loss, at the Etihad Stadium has seen us fall seven points behind Manchester City in second place, whilst also allowing the chasing pack to close on us.

Indeed, if Spurs win at West Ham this evening, we`ll fall to fourth place with Arsenal eyeing up that spot as we face a hard batch of fixtures.

Following the defeat, Rafa Benitez had this to say about the performance, commenting,

'When you lose, you have to be disappointed and this game was important for us because we could have been closer to Man City, but we cannot give up.'

'We have to fight for the top four because Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton are close behind.

Indeed they are. And as for the penalty and the referee`s refusal to give Joe Hart even a yellow card, Rafa bleated,

'I haven't seen the replay, but at least yellow card. You can argue he is going in this direction but it is still a clear chance. I think it was a turning point. We didn't do well in the first half but we went to half-time at 0-0.'

'We were talking about keeping the ball, doing better and showing more character. Then we had the penalty. It was a crucial moment in the game.'

Indeed it was, but we should have had the testicular fortitude to bounce back should we not!

Blah, blah, blah. He does go on.

Can anyone with some football brain give a good reason why Hazard was subbed yesterday..??...I am still thinking of a half decent reason since yesterday..and I have still not found one...rafalution is the only answer that makes some sense to me...I pray we make top 4.
layorh12
Demba Ba dived. Joe Hart never touched him. You were outclassed by a far superior team. Move on.
thecamelsfoot
^^^its not his fault..or is it??...

@merlin, u really made my day with the phrase "he bleated" I could picture rafa bleating and its hilarious. Same ol same ole drivel. Yet with no improvement, he gets to analyse the game but doesn't do anything about it for the last 6 games

Rafa Out! Torres Out! Benayoun Out! The scousers are a team with badluck. The earlier our board become sensible enough to not have any business with them the better. I don't know how i can manage to tolerate these three spys till june. There are all Looserpools on a mission to steal, kill and destroy our dear club.

Two games made me give up on Rafa. The youthful team which finished the game against Aston Villa deserved another chance to play together but what did rafa do, in the next game he changed the entire line up. That team to me looked like they enjoyed playing together and you could see Oscar and the young Piazon trying to do so well together but alas! they were never to be given the opportunity again. Then comes the semi final of the world club championship in Japan. He for the first time introduced Mikel - Luiz combo in the mid field which we all applauded but what happened in the next game is everyone's guess and the results are well known. The point am making here is that rafa is not willing to learn and understand his players well, every time players learn to understand and seemingly enjoy playing together rafa destroys that relationship in the next game whether it is in the name of rotation policy or what am not sure. This seems to take away the morale of players. Rafa is a lot more concerned about the well being of Torres and the desire to win the fan's support at all costs. That is the reason he has so often featured Lampard even when Lampard needed rest to keep him fresh. When Demba Ba came he had a lot of enthusiasm to do so well but poor him he soon had to learn that his role was only to support Torres. He has never wanted Ba to surpass Torres and eventually Ba has begun to play as just another day at the office. For me the only player who seem to have enjoyed playing under Benitez is Mata and no other player does. My observation may be wrong but I have seen Hazard lose some bit of momentum because he knows it is either him or Oscar to be sacrificed in most times even when those two have some bit of understanding playing together. You can make your own observations and make your own judgement.

Agree with some of Muleya1's comment up there. 4th or 6th or 10th place, I am just waiting for this whole experience with Rafa to be over.

We were crap. I cannot think of any other word to describe how we played. I was extremely disappointed. Whether we missed the Pen or not, we were just bad. there were no tactics, the team were not hassling, we gave away balls, Luiz could not pass for toffee, my sons team can play better. We had too many fixtures - my god, thats what the team is for - to play in international competitions. of the 8 cups,we are down to one . I dont think we will win anything this year. Is it the team or is it the manager or both??? I don't know if the players are "rebelling" but even without a manager, these are highly paid professionals who should perform better. I think the entire team should be deducted a months wages. We did not even have a shot at goal. I hope Roman saw the match and do something. Surely it cannot go on like this.

Meanwhile, Gary Cahill has hit out after Chelsea’s defence was left brutally exposed in the Etihad defeat. The England centre-half fumed: “I don’t know why or what was wrong. “Normally you probably get asked to do three or four important things in a game, against Man City I probably had 20-25. “Unfortunately we kept getting asked the question and ultimately there is always going to be a goal. That’s what happened, they had that many chances. “I thought they were on top for most of the game, they kept coming at us, coming at us. “You defend one, you defend two but sooner or later it is going to go in and that’s what happened.” Exactly what I said......The initial set up kept up inviting Man City and we couldn't do squat about it.

^^I remembered earlier in the season when we played arsenal and spurs and I tot RDM will set up the team as a counter attacking unit...but did a ''carefree'' and lunched a wicked attacking and high pressing formation in both cases and we won while playing some fantastic football...now gone are those days...we are consistently set up as a counter attacking side even against teams like sparta prague and the team in the lower bottom of the league..because rafa is our coach and tactically ranks amongst the very best..lmao!
layorh12
wow...what a refreshing post match comment from rafa....this guy is genius in repeating same sentence in different way...every post match comments is the same but is told in a different way...thats called rafa the genius..
shlok27
Its not just about tactics,a lot of it has to do with the psychological part of the game. Players morale and psychic which should be managed properly by the manager. Rafa's tactical ineptness is not just obviously over-rated,his ability to manage and motivate the players is worse off. The set up and approach to the game was tactically negative, and the motivation and the lads probably didn't believe they could win. After Lamps lost that penalty the players believe went further down hill...Its the managers job to keep the players motivated and in high spirit.
nelyvanile
RDM was the perfect coach to build us an admirable dinasty, yes he was highly inexperienced, and yes we can do better, but torres ruined his team, imagine if we had BA since the beginning of the season, not to talk of the blonde!!!!
Desmondadonis
To think of the suggestions many wonderful fans made in the man city vs chelsea preview, and to see the line up and tactical sub he made in the game, then u wonder if rafa went to get his license in the artic
Desmondadonis
Why did he change formation and wrong subs? am at a los here a clueless manager nonsense
obex
The main issue has been Rafa forcing his tactics on our squad and not adjusting his tactics to fit the squad players at his disposal. This was his main issue at Inter Milan and that was why he was sacked. It wasn't about injuries or any of the other lolly pop excuses that his defenders and excusers cook up. Even an inexperienced AVB tried to adjust tactics after the Arsenal 5-3 shocker!!!!! I am just not seeing anybody doing anything......
KAKUfrank
And Bale scores!!!!!!!!!
KAKUfrank
Those who know my views on this matter will acknowledge that while i dont love Rafa i dont hate the guy and i have never advocated he be sacked simply because i think our board and Roman frankly have for more blame to share in the mess we find ourselves in now but yesterdays game was really depressing for one simple reason..guys can go back to the community shield game when we played this same city team and played them one man down for over a half of play..we played better then, created more chances and were more in the game..with 10 men against their 11 than yesterday... With RDM leading this team we actually competed against City and gave then a game. Twice Rafa has led us out against City and both times we have looked decidely second class playing 11 v 11 and he even has the luxury of Ba that poor RDM didnt have. This is baffling..and yet some people on this site continue to spew nonsense about how and why Rafa is a better manager and tactical genius compared to RDM and so justify RDMs senseless sacking..i do hope that Roman and his three Amigos can at least have the honesty to see how badly and thoroughly they got this wrong..any way...i await the end of the season..i have since mentally signed out..Come summer hopefully we will get a substantive reboot.
GabeU
After mikel's substitution, the team completely lost it shape. Luiz as a lone DM was exposed, confused and clueless. Torres barely touched the call. We were lucky city decided to sit back and see the game out cos had they decided to continue attacking us in those last few minutes(like we did against villa in the 8-0 or city did to man utd in the 6-1), they would ve scored upto 2 more goals.
Chelz Akamz
I see Spurs beat West Ham so we are down to fourth now..the nunc dimitus begins.
GabeU
mq where are u?am missing u
Mkay
Well its 4th place for us. Gutted to say the least.
nelyvanile
And BTW whatever people her think of Spurs we need to call a spade a spade and duff our hats to AVB..also after RVP without a doubt Gareth Bale is the best player in the BPL..it will be very interesting to see if the spurs can keep him in the summer because rest assured after performances like today the big boys of Europe will come sniffing and levy loves his money...i remember during all the modric mess i was telling some of my spurs fans that i felt Bale was their best player but they were so fixated on modric..it is clear as day now.
GabeU
The reason I despise rafa is that he is not changing anything with the club, and how we play, if he is doing that then obviously its not working and won't work until we get a new manager with a better idea, rafa is now clueless and doesn't know how to get us off this mess, I would have agreed that the players are tired, but didn't barcelona play more matches than us under pep? Didn't man utd play more matches than us in 2009 after they won the UCL in 2008? Why did barca keep smashing every team on their part and why are we covering up for rafa's ineptitudes? If our players are tired they'll be losing once in probably 10 games not once in 2 games. Does anybody needs a sooth sayer to tell us that our football is now hoof the ball and not the slick passing game we are used to under rdm? No team spirit, no cohesiveness, no direction, no sense of belonging, no self believe!! Nothing!!
Desmondadonis
@nely and gabeu, I feel ur pain, but were u expecting spurs to lose? I wasn't!! They'll be third and we'll battle forth place out with arsenal and still lose out under rafa if we don't change him, his eyes are fixed on the cup games and that is what he really care about right now. Compare tottenham team with ours and the only player that can start for us in that team is bale or perhaps dembele, yet they are playing better football
Desmondadonis
@GabeU. AVB deserves a huge credit for getting the best out of Bale,by freeing him up and playing him in a free role. Its easier to choke a player out of the game when he plays in the wings than when played in the hole. Spurs deserve to be 3rd tbh.

Can't phantom what to say again, this team is dead and buried. Finishing 6th at this rate looks an herculean task, belief me if not for our early season form we should conveniently be in mid table by now. Thank you Emenalo.

rafa was always a fool...but we are bigger fools for appointing him...every second he is here we die a little...soon we really will be dead. ROMAN...GIVE RDM 10 MILLION TO COME AND SAVE US...AND YOUR BILLION BUCK INVESTMENT.
Gian-Franco/Luca
WOW..Now we are seeing a bust-up between coach & players...Even if the news is false, this will seriously raise doubts about our players ability...pressure is ON big time to finish in top 4...But, we are not clear on our objective....Now Rafa has to make something clear to the team...Europa League & FA Cup are not important, but Top 3 is...Play with passion in remaining 11 matches, we can even finish at 2nd...But, with on-going saga, I doubt this will happen. We may finish below Arsenal or even Everton at 6th Place
