Steaua Bucharest v Chelsea Preview

Tonight, we once again journey to a foreign land to participate in a competition we never dreamed, back in August, we`d be in, the Europa League.

Tonight we`re playing the first of a two legged affair against the Romanian side, Steaua Bucharest, in the 55,600 National Arena, with all the tickets being snapped up in a manner of hours by what threatens to be a noisy and vibrant partisan crowd.

Playing on a Thursday night, with an 18:00 hours (UK time) kick-off, still feels strange, as does having every subsequent Premier League fixture switched to a Sunday afternoon kick-off, but that`s the price you have to play for failure.

With an important FA Cup Quarter-Final coming up at Old Trafford this Sunday, it is expected that Rafa Benitez will rotate his side. Demba Ba is illegible having played for Newcastle United in a previous round and it is expected that the likes of Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Ramires will be rested.

Although the Europa League is small fry compare do the Champions League trophy we won back in May 2012, David Luiz is under no illusions as to what the competition means to him, commenting,

"It will be difficult - when you play as the Champions of Europe, Bucharest will come at us with massive power until the end."

"Everyone at Chelsea knows we have to stay in the top four so we can play in the Champions League again next season."

"But I also want to win the titles we`re going for."

"I don`t go into a Europa League game and think 'I don`t care about this."

"I have never won this competition so I want to feel what it`s like to win this title."

"I want to win it just as much as I did the Champions League last year."

"For me, it`s another European title."

And one of two trophies we could, quite possibly end up winning so let`s give it our best shot and get behind the team!

The aim is top 4, as long as our lads keep winning there, I won't mind rafa's agenda, if we get top 4 and perhaps as a bonus I'll be glad and we might be one of the top teams that won the UCL and UEFA cup within a year

Desmondadonis...winning the UCL and UEFA Cups within one year is a dubious distinction/record to say the least...if we acquire that record it comes with an asterisk - the nasty distinction of being the first CL Champions of going out in the first round.

@squig, what would u prefer? We should make top 3 and still win something, or make top 3 without winning anything? Hence my reasoning, atleast if we get a UCL spot and play the supercup again, its sure a worthy appetizer come next season, but as I said not that we should jeopardize our top 3 finish. It can just be a bonus
Desmondadonis
Des...I wasn't disagreeing with you, mate! I totally agree...it would be nice to win the Europa Cup. I was just saying that that record of winning both Europa and CL in one year wouldn't have been possible if we hadn't crashed out of the CL competition so early...and being the first Champion to do so in the first round. Hey, Top 3 or 4 is the priority but winning Europa and/or the Fa Cup would be nice.
Squig
@squig, sorry I misintepreted ur comment, I thought u would be seeing it as an insult if we win it at the back of being the kings of europe, so I was trying to say "half a loaf is better than nothing", but I agree with u that top 3 is priority!! If I am to chose between top 3 and the europa league, I know what I'll chose CFC XI: Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry (c), Bertrand; Mikel, Lampard; Benayoun, Oscar, Hazard; Torres"
Desmondadonis
I guess we aint seeing Ake in the team news due to the youth FA cup at derby, I would have loved him in the pivot, and seeing rammy and moses rested, I have an inklin of what or gaffer is planning, I'll rather him rest hazard and mata than those two workhouses.
