Oscar on Target

With the Premier League on hold, to accommodate international football, it`s interesting to see how our stars get on.

Last night, courtesy of mrs merlin doing her business at a school governors meeting, I was lucky enough to stumble upon coverage of the friendly international between Italy and Brazil, in Geneva.

The game, one of a double-header Brazil are playing in Europe, with the second game being against Russia (at Stamford Bridge), ended 2-2 after brazil, in true Chelsea style, threw away a 2-0 lead.

But, the highlight for me was seeing Oscar get on the score-sheet, this lad is classy and he`s only going to get better as he matures!

With regular game time he will....but "some1" will have to leave first ;)
@Mq
He's one for the future. Oh and he scored another against buffon. Remember his wonder goal against juve? A true world class player.
manzo2k6
Is he jinxed or what??just see how he made the goal look easy but if it were to be the EPL,he would either shot straight at the Goalie or hit the post/side netting...good goal though, hope he can start replicatin such sublime finishin for us in the Epl
Ken4CFC
A huge talent with a better manager who knows how to play him he will prosper.
Elbowz
Top lad, his goal yesterday was a top class finish... I was really surprised to hear Wilkins say that Brazil need a superstar No.10 and that Oscar doesn't fill that role well...
Latunvic
This lad will really come into his own when Frank finally leaves. Oscar has the potential to be our top player in what he can do. The right manager will be the key to unlocking this.
BlueABS
We're in good hands, ad to think "some1" thought that his was an inefficient buy. and that Hulk would have been better...;-)
Gian-Franco/Luca
OSCAR=Buffon's Nightmare
MAY192012
Not really GIAN because Hulk's a winger, Oscar isn't. We still lacking in "Hulk's" department but Oscar's effectively a £25Mil sub ;)
@Mq
@Ken no he is not jinxed...The lad's a guaranteed starter for Brazil and was given the #10 jersey for a reason(Kaka stripped of that no for a #18). He is not a guaranteed starter for Chelsea under Rafa and the pressure to perform whenever he is on the pitch obviously gets to him.
nelyvanile
Nely, but the pressure was non existent when he was scorin great goals and makin fool of goalies in europe(CL and EL),was it??
Ken4CFC
Buffon will surely be wondering what he did to this kid...he certainly knows how to score against Gigi. Each time i watch Oscar,i dont fail to be enamoured by his touches and skillset...he really is 25mil well spent, cos he obviously will get better. Little wonder he made that Selecao #10 shirt his at such a young age.
Ohans
@Ken. He was a guarantee starter in RDM team, and made his mark from the get go...He has struggled for performance since Rafa, after being benched for Moses, but he is starting to recover the confidence back off late with recent starts.
nelyvanile
@latunvic..i listened to Ray Wilkins commentary on the match and i actually think it was spot on..i dont think he was knocking Oscar as a person or player..what he was saying is that this Selecao team has no single transcendental player..a player capable of single handedly changing a game on the level of their individual skill and ability and he is right. Many would like to believe Neymar is such a player but he has been found out again and again as a lot of flash but little actual substance in big games against quality opposition. Oscar is a very good player but at present he is certainly not Messi, Ronaldo, or even Arguero or Ibrahimovic level. Every time Brazil have won or reached the finals of the World cup they have had at least one transcendental player on their squad; 2002 and 1998; Ronaldo, Dinho and Rivaldo the three R were world Class and ruled Europe, 1994; Romario and Bebeto, even in 82 and 86 when they won nothing but played Jogo Bonito of the highest order they had Zico, Eder, Careca and the original Falcao..the list goes on and on. As Wilkins said this present Selecao has many good players but no top class players..zero. Honestly i think if one were to be honest the top 12 goal scorers and top 12 attacking midfield talents in the world today do not include one brazilian and that is the first time this has happened in my life time watching the beautiful game. I agree with Rays observation that this Selecao team even with Scolari and Alberto Perraira working together on it does not have the talent level to win the world cup in Rio..i would go so far to say that if they get drawn into a group of death group with two other teams in the top 15 in the world they may not even escape the group stages..i think they are in that bad a shape..the team is playing better now than with Mano Meneses and at least Phil is honest enough to have them scheduled for games against top notch opposition rather than the minnows that Meneses liked to play to pad his stats and fool the unwise but i think reality will hit home hard during the confedrations cup tournament because i give them zero chance of winning that either.
GabeU
Nely, even when he was in superb form under rdm he stil failed to register a goal in the epl which is a direct contrast to his goalscorin exploits in europe..see my point is not whether he was inform under rdm or out of form under rafa,my point is his inability to replicate his goal scorin touch in the epl even when he gets a great bulk of our clearcut chances
Ken4CFC
@Ken. In that respect the difference between the EPL and European football is the pace of the game in the EPL. You have to be alert mentally and on your feet at all times in the Premier League, and I'm pretty sure he'll adjust to the pace of the game in the EPL as he matures.
nelyvanile
We can never know the true worth of oscar until we play him as our no.10, he will never become a great footballer for chelsea except we play him in his natural role, I think under a manager that knows what he is doing, there is the possibility that one of him or mata "might" leave. He won't be comfortable playing in the wings, his true place in a team is as their no.10. I hope he reaches his full potential as a footballer either at chelsea or away from us. His type of football is a joy to watch for football lovers
Desmondadonis
Nely,i hope he adjust pretty fast but could that also be responsible for his profligacy in front of goal in the epl??i mean look at the way he took his goal yesterday just like a classic #9,he made the goal look easy but i bet if it were the epl he would fluff it,he has been presented with clearcut chances and sitters but i dont know how he manages to fluff them all,am slatin him just that i wish he could just step up his finishin 4 us in the league...
Ken4CFC
Did you guys see how easily Bonucci out muscled David Luiz on several occasions. Hulk had a better game, was able to hold the ball.
B2K420
@GabeU, Wilkins was specific.. he made reference to the No.10 role/player and we all know Oscar is the one wearing that jersey and playing that role for now... he went on to suggest that Oscar is a good player but that Brazil needs a superstar No.10 which Oscar is not. He was indirectly saying that Oscar isn't a top class No.10. Oscar may not be as flamboyant as the likes of Ronaldinho, Zico etc, but he's doing a good job and I find it kind of ridiculous for a coach to base the whole of Brazil's performance on just the No. 10 role. If Brazil fails to win the world cup it's not because they don't have a flamboyant kind of No.10.. it's down to the whole team.. they have more problem in defense and CF position than in the No.10 position so I find Wilkins analysis of the team and specifically the No.10 position to be a bit off point....
Latunvic
And even as bad as some claim Brazil are, they still managed to score two goals and could have won if not for their rather poor defending.... They still have Thiago silva coming back to the defense which is certainly going to give them a more solid defense, Ramires was not available yesterday, Oscar was pulled out as early as 60mins, Willian is not even in the squad yet, Hernanes was impressive yesterday... To me, they are really picking up and are still a formidable force... Their main problem is CF position and Neymar....
Latunvic
Oscar is already a very good player, but keeping in mind, this is his first season in BPL and he has been playing for the Brasil first team for one year now. Mata 23m, Oscar, 25m and Hazard 32m-all top bargains.
icebluelg
Brazil will go far in the WC if Scolari can get It right. Julio Ceazar Alvez-Silva-Luiz-Marcelo should be his back 5, Harnanes-Ramires in the Pivot and Moura-Oscar-Neymar Pato upfront. He can push Neymar upfront in some games to play as a False #9 and include Kaka in the band of 3. Moura-Kaka-Oscar can be allowed to roam freely, behind Neymar. Or play a roaming 3 of Neymar-Oscar-Kaka behind Damiao. Scolari have options he only needs to get it right and gain the trust of his players. Kaka, Ronaldinho & Ceazar's experience will be Vital.
SameX
@samex u forget to add willian in that team and gustavo with fernandinho in that squad, brazil has a lot of talented players that can make them go far and beat any team on their day, all they need is to harness those talents having both willian and oscar at the same time on the pitch will be devastating
Desmondadonis
Forgot* the thing brazil is lacking right now is a dangerous finisher, da miao is not there yet
Desmondadonis
Yeah, Gustavo, Fernandinho are also quality. Willian too but he should have stayed with Shaktar or come to England to boost his chances of joining the WC Squad. Willain-Kaka-Oscar Neymar front 4 will be devastating.
SameX
Haha... England having a training session.... This San Marino are a disgrace to football... 0-5 in less than 45mins, at home.... we may see 0-10 today...
Latunvic
Spain finding it difficult to crack Finland's defense....
Latunvic
San marino should be banned from playin football,my local team would do a better job
Ken4CFC
Put my 12yr old brother in that team and he would be san marino footballer of the year all his life
Ken4CFC
Haha... it seems England had sympathy on S.Marino towards the end of 2nd half... if not, it could have gotten to about 0-10.... Finland did a good job, forcing Spain to a draw is never easy.....
Latunvic
Spain are gradually slippin into a playoff position, lose against france in paris and i can gladly say its uhuru
Ken4CFC
Am happy for belgium, they seem to be gradually realisin their potential..2 of our players(kdb and eden) got both goals in their 2 nil win at macedonia
Ken4CFC
What can i say about czech rep??absolutely disappointin, didnt see the game but to lose 3 nil at home is not the best way to qualify for the wc
Ken4CFC
That Belgium team is wicked. The Manager should play Dembele-Witsel in the Pivot with Hazard & Martens on the Wings, KDB as #10 and Lukaku upfront or Felleini as false #9. Their defence is solid already with the likes of Courtois, Vermalen, Vertonghen, Kompany.... They should go far in the WC.
SameX
I think Spain paid for keeping Mata on the bench... not saying he's better than those who played but Mata is currently on form; better form than Fabregas and Carzola.... I also don't understand why Del Bosque doesn't play Soldado, he's a better CF imo than Negredo or the false 9 (Fabregas)....
Latunvic
The belgium team is filled with quality from left, right and center..even there bench is oozin class, the beauty of it all is their youthfulness, they ve been underachievers 4 a while now but i believe this bunch of talents would erase that tag
Ken4CFC
As for spain, they got what they deserve, enough of this stupid experiments and bias team selection..soldado,ruben castro and michu all deserve a place in that team but instead del bosque opts for the usual suspects irrespective of their form..i still hope spain qualify for the showpiece though .
