What We Learned Yesterday

What We Learned Yesterday

Congratulations to the Blues the world over!

We finally did it, against all odds. We're doubly champions of Europe indeed. Twice as Champs! Bravo!

Yesterday at the Amsterdam ArenA, history was made, but not without us learning a few things that were before now mostly...,oh well...

1. Torres likes playing against Benfica

Our £50m hit-man obviously likes playing against Benfica as he ensured he increased his goal tally against the Portuguese club by adding yet another goal, one that almost took an eternity to touch the back of the net, Chelsea's first on the night, to the two strikes he scored against them while yet a Liverpool striker! Here at VC we say gracias, gracias, gracias amigo to the blonde bloke, even as we 'demand' that that now-rested black mask of his be kept in a safe corner in our museum for the upcoming Lukaku and probably, Islam Feruz...just in case.

2. Torres loves the Europa league - more than Abramovich and Obi Mikel combined!

As FT9 was busy trying to cement his status as Mr. Europa League by scoring his 6th strike in 9 games, a conspicuous absence was club owner RA who, instead of being Platini's special guest, left the former French maestro and UEFA supremo to become 'skilfully' sandwiched by the fearsome legendary duo of Portuguese Eusebio and Dutch Cruyff! Now, what in the world was RA thinking, seeing as Mikel Obi who only recently disclosed his avowed obdurate 'hatred' for the Europa League was the first non-starter to hoist the trophy as frantically as David Luiz couldn't imagine necessary! Even Luiz himself didn't look too impressed and enthused!

3. Lampard's still got it!

As though Fergie's 'One that got away' wasn't satisfied with not just matching but shattering Tambling's 40-year golden record, our captain on the night ensured that not only will the Benfica goal-tender remember him for the rest of his life, but also that his goal record will stay save for a long, long time as he showed his evergreen ability to hit footie, hit it the way the Robbie Savages, Xabi Alonso, John Arnse Riise and the Roberto Carloses of this world would be proud of! #SignHimUpGourlay

4. Ivanovic has a conscience!

The ever-loyal Serb was vilified and derided by sections of our fans and press alike in the roles he played in ensuring that Rafa 'enjoyed' so much hate, venom and spite of the Stamford Bridge crowd throughout the months of February and March, in Swansea! Well, the wily no-nonsense enterprising Iva stepped up, sorry, rose up, hung in the air (whoever said only Messi and Ronaldo could manage such audacious audacity against the natural law of gravity?), to head home the winner seconds before stoppage time! Thanks Iva for making amends. Now can I please ask for a pay-rise for our dear Serb saviour?

5. Mata doesn't like finals

Our little Spanish technician clearly doesn't like playing in a club final - just earlier rounds and never the big nights! So bad was his passes and general performance that Ramires was the most obvious player in a blue shirt on the night! That said it all. Thus, if our best player is to reach any of the Iniesta or Xavi heights for both club and country, he'd do well to serve his best for the big nights - he wasn't so brilliant at the Allianz Arena last term, was he?

6. Benfica are chokers

Having lost their previous major 5 finals prior to last night's, one would've thought the Portuguese capital side would take the initiative from the jaded Blues and get the business done. No, they wouldn't, rather they'd follow up their abysmal showing at the weekend by all but surrendering the Portuguese championship to arch-rivals FC Porto, by choking under 2nd-half pressure from Chelsea by conceding a late goal right at the death! One can only empathize with them as they try, with their Jesus, to figure out what had hit 'em! Or do they sack Jesus?

7. What we may likely learn this Sunday:
Everton who has nothing to play for will be coming all-guns-blazing when they visit us at the Bridge with their departing manager and United's manager-in-waiting, a la Bayern's Pep, hoping to spoil our fun via directives from the United 'up-stairs'! But sorry Moyes, oh Fergie, it just won't work! We got Lampard, u don't! Well, didn't. Lol

Interesting piece @dope. Well Mata suffered as he was heavily marked. Plus not having Hazard to link up with and pull defenders and create space hindered him. Rami was on the right, Oscar on left when he played so well against Spurs on the right. No interchange of positions as when Mazacar are in operation. All 3 suffered behind Torres as did our pivot. Torres and our backline were immense for us. Also @dope Mata more often than not comes up with something even if during the majority of the match he may struggle. His flick on from Cech's throw went to Torres on half way line who made a run and scored our 1st goal. Plus Iva's winner came off a well placed corner from Mata. And who can forget Drogba's equaliser in Munich. It came from a well taken corner too, again it was Mata. So 3 assists in 2 European finals is not that bad, right?

lampard has got it??? yeh man. you spoked about shooting either way. so no offence. but mate don't even think he has got something like bossing the midfield or that sort of stuff. apart from 2 shoots and hand gestures of captain, what he did yesterday? ball watching may be? he didn't even do 1% of what matic or enzo perez did. one team really enjoyed lampard starting the game and that was not chelsea. so thanks to individual brilliance of torres on the night and iva's leap that we have won. otherwise lampard would slammed like something alongside ramires. and in remember that the matches we won against united had no.role to play for lamps and JT.. it was our new core.

biggest reason why we don't at all play fluidic like some greater european teams is that passive midfield of ours who.either know how to score or either just know how to protect back 4. the reason we have been struggling since double winning 2010 year is that we have never replaced ballack or the old bison.
16/05/2013 20:31:00
@ChampionBlue, yes Lamps still got it. Goals! Goals!! Goals!!! And don't u go telling me #SuperFrank has ever "bossed" the midfield, ever, in his more than illustrious career 'cause I won't be buying that. So, there u go...he still got his groove going for him mate - GOALS!

nah i didn't mean ever @dope.. he definately has done that but not since 2010 double winning season. and now.a days his goals just hide his lack of steel in midfield.
16/05/2013 21:49:00
How the Hell does Robbie Savage get a mention there? Were you on the funny stuff in Amsterdam yesterday mate?!
16/05/2013 22:46:00
thanks HGH, it was fun reading this article... oh and last night I couldn't see Roman when they were handing the cup and medals..... I saw Yohan Cryuff though but I couldn't find Roman........... as for Ivanovic, I know you probably said the last sentence tongue in cheek but last year I read an article that said Ivanovic's salary is 28k a week... now compare it to Torres' 175k a week, or Mikel's 90k a week, and even Cahill's 80k a week... I think we're paying him less than what he values...

Absolutely Persian, Iva's salary is too meagre(he's actually our least paid star) considering not just his loyalty, goals and defensive abilities but also his industry and advancing age! The piece is mainly a satire though with some 'home truths' thrown in for good measure. Thanks bro.

Fun read HGH..i am actually shocked to learn Iva's pay is so low. That needs to be upgraded otherwise eventually using Ol arry language "his head will be turned" by some greedy rivals out there.
17/05/2013 03:37:00
Good read- still amazes me how 28K per week is meagre in footballing terms though Iva certinly deserves more than that given his credentials and compared to some of the others.
17/05/2013 03:56:00
nah.. wrong info. ivanovic signed new five and a half year contract in 2011. so he is not on wages that were offered to him when he arrived. ivanovic had become a consistent performer till 2011. and i can tell you no.agent us so dumb not to know how much a consistent perfomer should be earning. i can gurantee you that he is atleast on £75-80 k a week. here is the link about his new deal.
17/05/2013 06:12:00
and 28k might be salary when we signed him in jan 2008 on only 3 year deal. so his deal was about to expire in summer of 2011. and he signed a new one in jan 2011. so do you guys think that according to his performances and in situation of becoming a free agent within 6 months he would sign a deal of 28 k a week? naah not possible. we have adopted this policy in recent years. whereby we sign players from lesses leagues and offer them salary of 25-30 k a week. and after there bright performances for 2 years, we give them a new contract. this happened in case of luiz and ramires also. both were on 25-30 k when they first came but both signed new contracts last summer. the player for whom you should feel bad about earning is Juan Mata. the guy has been so consistent for 2 years. and he is on salary of €3.5 million a year. that is in pounds near to 50-55 k a week. and i think.he will sign new bumper contract this summer. and these deals are fair to us too. because if player doesn't perform to expected level, then we don't get mugged in finances.
17/05/2013 06:21:00
I think mata is on 65k not 55, I saw the salary cap last season, though I can't remember all, but mata is on 65k, mikel on 80k, essien on 90k, lamps on 145k, terry on 155k, torres on 175k and cahill on 75k, luiz was on 80k, I guess it has been increased with his new extension, cech on 100k if memory serves me right

Mata is marked out, not a poor man in the final.
17/05/2013 14:07:00
@Dope Lampard does not boss the Midfield cos its not his thing, he is not the Pirlo or Xavi type of CM, he is his own type of CM- he scores Goals!!!
17/05/2013 20:04:00
I have not seen any other Mid with Lamps goal scoring ability, though Hamsik comes close. Mata scores goals too but he does not time his runs like Hamsik & Lamps, he tries to get to the end of every attack instead.
17/05/2013 20:09:00
Of course that's what I said in my comment above, no? that he still got his groove on, which is scoring goals and not "bossing" anything? Go up read the comment again mate.
