A second win takes Chelsea to the top of the table but was it in controversial circumstances?
Team News - For the visit of Aston Villa, our second game of the new season, Jos Mourinho chose to make two changes. A fit again Juan Mata came in for Kevin De Bruyne and Demba Ba replaced Fernando Torres up front with Torres not even afforded a place on the bench.
As for the opposition, Paul Lambert made one change from the eleven that started against Arsenal, a fixture they won 3-1, with Ciaran Clark coming in for the injured Nathan Baker.
First Half - Chelsea, as you`d expect, enjoyed the greater share of possession and took the lead after just seven minutes when Hazard burst down the left and unleashed a shot that Guzan could only parry into the path of Luna who saw the ball bounce off of his chest and enter the net.
Chelsea had started well and their intricate passing was causing Villa problems with the away side having trouble getting out of their own half. Villa`s first chance of the half came courtesy of a quickly taken free kick from Luna with Weimann making a mess of his header at the far post.
Although Chelsea were having the greater share of possession, chances were at a premium with Villa not allowing Chelsea time on the ball. An incident involving Ba and Clark saw a lot of claret spilled and Clark had to be replaced by Jores Okore.
As the half came to an end it was, surprisingly, Villa who were doing the pressing as the fourth official indicated three minutes of stoppage time. But those three minutes were enough for Villa, through Benteke, to get an equaliser with the Belgian scoring the first goal against us this season. The goal coming after Agbonlahor beat Ivanovic and when the ball was cut back Benteke was on hand to smash the ball home.
All in all, a disappointing end to a half that had, for the first fifteen minutes, started so wel.
Second Half - Villa got the second half underway but Chelsea having conceded in stoppage time in the first half were showing more urgency. Villa, meanwhile, were still defending deep with numbers behind the ball. The best chance of the early stages of the half came when Hazard drove a shot wide.
But, Villa, through Agbonlahor could have taken the lead when Lowton teed the forward up and his shot flashed narrowly wide. Cech was then asked to produce a decent save as Weimann almost gave Villa the lead after a cross from Benteke evaded the Chelsea rear guard.
Trying to inject something extra into the performance, Mourinho introduced Lukaku and Schurrle in place of Ba and Mata. However it was to be an unlikely scorer who was to regain the lead for Chelsea, Ivanovic. The defender heading home a cross from Lampard. However, should Ivanovic have been on the pitch after a contre-temp with Benteke?
As the half progressed towards a conclusion, Cech had to remain alert to rush out and foil Weimman. With five minutes of stoppage time announced Chelsea had to defend well and Paul Lambert looked furious when the ball appeared to strike the arm of Terry in the area and the referee waved play on. But Chelsea hung on for their second consecutive win.
Chelsea - Cech, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Lampard, Oscar (Van Ginkel-84), Mata (Schurrle-65), Hazard, Ba (Lukaku-65)
Unused Subs - Schwarzer, Azpilicueta, Mikel, De Bruyne,
Chelsea Scorers - Luna og (7), Ivanovic (73)
