I like many of you out there in the blue nation just finished watching the absolute snooze fest of the 0-0 draw between us and ManU.
Let me be clear, a draw for us at Old Trafford this early in the season with a pretty young team against the defending champs is not a bad result, we remain in pole position in the BPL and if I were to rate our team sections on today's performance I would give our defense an A (not quite an A +) considering the way we handled a really dangerous trio of RVP, Rooney and Welbeck (I must say though I was particularly thankful that that dangerous poacher called Chicarito was not available to pinch a goal of us..whether offsides or not).
The concern is when we look at our midfield which I would rate a C (Despite having more numbers numerically than the ManU midfield players they had us pinned back for extended periods of the match and the midfield hardly gave a decent outlet for our under siege defense.
As bad as that is though the biggest cause for concern is our attacking third which I would without batting an eye rate for this match an F. Did DeGea even have to make any half decent save in this match? Did Vidic and Ferdinand work up any high level competitive sweat for this?
Honestly if I ever hear anyone on this forum bring up this madness of the false 9 formation ever again..i might just lose it. We all remember how it went when poor RDM was forced to deploy that formation against Juve at Turin after Danny sturridge got injured during the prematch warm up and he had long lost his patience with a misfiring El Nino. Yeah as i recall we got handed our behinds in 3-0 shell lacking then.
Clearly Jose set up the line up today with the false 9 with the goal of containment..aiming to ensure we did not get beat and so to flood the midfield. This speaks volumes of his lack of trust for our two senior strikers El Nino and Demba Ba. He apparently felt we had a better chance of nicking a goal and then bunkering down with the false 9 formation rather than having one of those two start the game. The plan backfired spectacularly with us having absolutely no bite up front. We have in this match exhibit B of what I have argured vociferously with fellow blues fans repeatedly about this false 9 nonsense.
The only team this formation works well for is Barca and it does there because of their tiki Taka possession game and the fact that the false 9 in their formation is played by the player who is head and heels the best player on the planet right now. Even La Roja with all their midfield talent when they have tried the false 9 formation have always struggled mightily to score goals. These are the facts and i hope Jose learnt this lesson well today; scratch the false 9 as an option for Chelsea FC if we actually intend to try and secure a result in a game.
This brings me to the next very disturbing stat. We have played 3 games thus far in the BPL, one game more than any other team and we are the only top 6 side that has not had one goal thus far scored by any of our strikers/forwards. This is really alarming and this trend if it continues will eventually land us in trouble. To continue to depend on CAMs, Lampard and our defenders to score us goals is a recipe for coming disaster. The strikers primary job is to score goals..if they are not doing that we have a major problem and loading up on CAMs like a squirrel hoards nuts before winter is not going to solve that as today's match so eloquently shows.
I realize that we are still actively seeking to get in a striker before the transfer window ends but I must say I am very frustrated and confused by why in 3 games played thus far our most effective striker based on goals scored for time on the pitch in the BPL last season has not got one start and has played the least minutes of all our three strikers. I am not plussed by this argument that the guy is still a youngster. The mantra of "if the player is good enough, they are old enough to start" applies here. This guy scored 17 BPL goals last season playing mostly as a sub with West Brom last season with midfield service that surely is not as good as what we offer now. None of our other strikers was anywhere close to that productive for us. This guy scored a hat trick against essentially this very same ManU squad with SAF coaching in the last game of his illustrious career. I am honestly at a loss as to what the point is having this guy sit on the bench while we continue playing Ba and Torres or play an abominable false 9 formation like we did today. Are we seriously saying he would have done much worse than the productivity (or lack thereof) of our forward line thus far?
We have escaped the first major test of this season at Old Trafford but next comes a date with the Bavarian Juggernauts, Bayern Munich and those guys have a score to settle against us. They are certainly more experienced and a more complete squad than we are currently without a doubt but for us to make this upcoming Super cup something of a contest rather than having to bunker down and soak up unending pressure once again we need to have a half decent threat up front and I would argue that the Kraken right now offers by far our best option in that regard. He is certainly not the finished product but he is better than the others we have and I for one don`t want to see a repeat of the Monaco fiasco when we faced Atletico Madrid last year. If we are to lose to Bayern at least we should have a respectable showing and offer some threat up front. Based on the evidence thus far I don`t see Ba or El Nino providing that.
Jose for goodness sakes; Release the Kraken!!!
