Chelsea slipped to their first opening group fixture defeat in the Champions League as Basel came from behind to win.
Team News - Mourinho shuffled his pack for the opening Group E game with Willian making his Chelsea debut, Van Ginkel coming into the midfield, Cahill partnering Luiz at the heart of the defence, Lampard captaining the side and previous Champions League stalwarts Terry, Azpilicueta and Mata on the bench. As for Schurrle and Torres they didn`t make the eighteen selected. Ramires was, of course, suspended after his red card in the Super Cup Final.
First Half - The first half was to be a frustrating affair for Chelsea supporters. Chelsea, although slick at times, didn`t move the ball forward fast enough and chances were few and far between. Numerous corner kicks were won but apart from one that saw the Basel keeper drop the ball whilst being impeded, the delivery was either poor or wasted by taking them too short.
In fact, in direct comparison, it was FC Basel who moved the ball quicker and Per Cech was the busier of the two keepers, watching one curling effort from Salah curl past his far post and saving one low drive from an opponent.
But just as you thought the end would finish without a goal Chelsea produced one slick move that produced the moment of the half. David Luiz burst forward with the ball and fed Lampard who, with a deft touch, fed Oscar and the young Brazilian hit his shot across the keeper and into the far corner.
Second Half - If Chelsea thought the Oscar goal would open the floodgates they were in for a rude awakening. Despite upping the tempo and Oscar hitting the bar with a sweet effort, FC Basel were to provide the better attacking play.
The equalizer, as Chelsea looked inept in defence came from Salah who saw his low shot beat Cech. But worse was to come when after Streller saw a shot deflected wide, from the resulting corner Streller headed home to give the FC Basel side the lead.
Chelsea huffed and puffed but the FC Basel keeper was never really tested and already there are being questions asked about our potential to win anything this season.
