Gone Down Under

A former servant of ours, who was a prominent member of the Chelsea squad during Jose Mourinho`s first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, has found a new home.

William Gallas, a cultured French defender and a player who has played for the three top clubs in London, in Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal, but who is now 36 years of age, has moved down-under to sign for Perth Glory, in Australia.

Although Gallas shipped a lot of criticism when he left Stamford Bridge he`ll always be a hero to some of us and nobody, who witnessed it, will ever forget that wonderful late winner he scored against Spurs that gave us a victory as we marched to glory.

William Gallas was one of Chelsea`s all time greatest defenders when in his prime. He had the ability to play anywhere accross the back four and his level never dropped. I can`t think of many other defenders who were, or who are, capable of doing that to such a high level. Although we got Ashley in return when Gallas went the other way to Arsenal I, like many Chelsea fans was gutted when he left. Unfortunately for him, he never won any more silverware after leaving Stamford Bridge and I`m sure that is something he will always regret. There are many fans that will be blinded by the fact that he went and played for two of our most hated London rivals and that will cloud their judgement of what a great player William Gallas truly was. Great pace and awareness, excellent in the tackle, read the game superbly and could play left back just as well as right, yet still always got his fair share of goals every season that he played for us. Should have stayed a Blue.

Would have been nice to have both Ashley and him play for us HGH :), Europe's best defence we would definitely have.

Well, that's gone with the wind Seabourch, wasn't it? Besides, Gallas was a prerequisite -- part of the player-plus-cash deal -- for Ashley if memory serves me, and in hindsight, you'd agree Mourinho was admirably foresighted and spot on in his decision-making....
