A dramatic last minute winner gave Chelsea all three points this afternoon.
Team News - For this fixture, Jose Mourinho made one change to the eleven that had started in Gelsenkirchen, against Schalke; in midweek with the fit-again Ashley Cole coming in for Cesar Azpilicueta.
First Half - Chelsea got the action underway attacking the Matthew Harding End. The first clear cut chance was created by Chelsea when a ball chipped in from Oscar, following a cleared corner, was volleyed just over the bar by Cahill.
City responded with a series of corners, three of which were won in fairly quick succession but they came to nothing. Lampard became the first player to be booked after he`d tripped Fernandinho and shortly afterwards Zabaleta went into the book after going through the back of Hazard.
Ramires pushing forward down the right flank, delivered two great balls into the danger area. The first saw Torres caught offside and the second saw the same player control the ball but hit his shot over the bar from close range.
Natasic became the third player to be cautioned, going through the back of Torres as the action started to heat up. With 33 minutes on the clock, Chelsea went ahead. Torres left Clichy for dead and when he hit the by-line his wonderful ball in saw Schurrle score his first Chelsea game, from close range.
Torres then, inside the box, somehow found space to unleash a shot that cannoned back off of the bar. City responded with Aguero trying his luck from an acute angle but Cech parried the effort away. From a corner, won late on in the half, Terry saw his header drift wide.
Second Half - No changes were made at half time by either manager. If Chelsea were looking to keep it tight then they were to suffer a rude awakening when City equalised early in the half. Cech looked to be caught in two minds when Aguero unleashed a shot and could only get a hand to the ball as the net bulged.
City were now in the ascendency and forced a corner soon after the goal. Ramires committed a foul on Nasri, outside the area, and from the resulting free kick Cech easily claimed Garcia`s header. Hazard, darting into the box, thought he`d earned a penalty but Howard Webb thought otherwise.
Lampard saw a free kick saved by Hart before Garcia received a yellow card for blocking Torres and from the resulting free kick Terry just failed to reach the ball at the back post. As the game switched from end to end Cech was forced to save, from Silva, with his feet.
Mourinho, with 65 minutes gone, replaced Lampard and Schurrle with Wilian and Mikel. Soon after Torres out-stripped Garcia for pace and was felled, sadly, Oscar`s free kick went high, wide and handsome. Aguero almost put City ahead with a curling shot that drifted just wide.
With time running out, Ramires did his utmost to put Chelsea ahead but his effort flew just over. Seven minutes from time Eto`o replaced Hazard and Willian, from a free kick, stuck a teasing ball in towards the back post that evaded everyone.
But, just as you thought time was running out, the winner did come. Terry punted a long ball forward and Hart and Nastasic got in a mess with the defender heading the ball past the onrushing Hart. Torres aware of the situation, pressed for the ball and steered it into the net to send Stamford Bridge wild with delight.
