Cole Seeks Contract Extension

Cole Seeks Contract Extension

There was no need for Ashley Cole to be present at the Emirates Stadium last night, probably to the annoyance of the Arsenal support who love to bait their former player.

Mourinho, on the back of the thrilling win over Manchester City at the weekend, had decided the left-back needed a rest and that Ryan Bertrand was quite capable of doing a decent job.

Cole, now thirty-two years of age, remains a valuable asset to the squad and with his contract expiring in the summer, is hoping to get an extension.

Speaking to the media, Cole has remarked,

"I signed an extension at the start of the year and so have this year left. However, that will be up at the end of the season."

"I hope to stay for longer. I have had a great career here and, of course, I`d love to stay if they still want me."

"There is going to be a time when they will have to replace me."

"I have Ryan Bertrand in my place and one day I`m going to watch him play, so the time will come when I will finish my career."

So, the burning question today is - Should Chelsea award Ashley Cole a contract extension? If yes why and if not, why not?

We should watch his performance and analyse it carefully till the end of the season before we decide, and we can try to snap up luke shaw

^Who? Cole "as a backup" for who? Luke who?? LOL... that's so not happening mate. Get over it; for whatever it is worth, Shaw can only be bought as an UNDERSTUDY to one of Cole or Bertrand. Simple as....

Luke who?he is one of defensive units that conceded just 3 goals, with 5 clean sheet from 7 games he plays. Cole is 33/34 come next season and u expect to pay him the same amount he earns currently as he can running up and down down the left hand side nonstop? Shaw probably could be as understudy to Cole but Bertrand? and if he being Cole understudy it couldn't for long before he takeover from him. so we have to be careful with Cole salary and his status in the team...

Bring back pva as back up for bertrand, I believe We should give Bertrand and pva a chance to prove themselves for couple of seasons and if it doesn't work out we go into the market. I still believe Cole deserves another year contract.

If he is ok with being 2nd choice...I hope we promote bertrand as 1st choice.....there are 2 clubs circling bertrand already (liverpool, everton are eyeing him...pity that other clubs see his potential, while we cant)

C n T Fan, you bet I know everything there is to know about the teenager...how he's also a "Chelsea fan", plus the usual English hype. My only gripe is you asking that an England centurion who's arguably the best leftback in the world be made an understudy to a fledgling which, you'd agree, is a rather ludicrous idea to say the least!

I think cole hasn't done enough this season to deserve a new contract, what helps him to scare of his opponents is his reputation as one of the best LBs in the world. I think buying luke shaw would be best for us cos betrand will know he can be first choice by working extra hard and shaw also wouldn't just come here to warm the bench. We'll have an excellent competition at LB than we've had in recent years which will only help the team. BUT, cole's experience will be needed occasionally which makes me come to the conclusion that we should sign a pre contract agreement with shaw bringing him to SW6 after next season thereby signing cole to a not extendable 1 year contract after which he may decide to retire or leave as a legend that he is.

HGH Magic-I never said understudy.the word I used was backup.backup and understudy is a different thing.a backup just like what Giggs do at Man Utd now...

Yes bruv, sorry for mixing that up; understudy was obviously my word, and you're right about the distinction between the two words and the analogy with Giggs which pretty much cleared everything up though I'm not sure Cole at 33 can't still give us at least another full season of service of the highest quality! So, I'd go with giving Cole another year; monitor Bertrand's progress while we sign Luke Shaw on a pre-contract agreement till he can join us in June 2015!
