Rafa Destroyed Terry's Confidence‏

But he`s back as good as ever!

Former England captain and Chelsea "Captain, Leader, Legend", John Terry, turns 33 today; and ahead of the Stoke City clash at The Britannia Stadium later this afternoon Mourinho has spoken out on how he had to literally rebuild Terry's confidence and self-esteem which was at its lowest ebb upon his return to the club from Real Madrid in the summer owing to his predecessor's baffling marginalisation of the classy centre back.

"Yes I had to remind him of his importance to the club when I came in because his self-esteem was a bit affected in relation to last season," Mourinho said.

"He was a little affected, feeling in a quiet way pain over the doubts about him.

"I'm not here to give him something he doesn't deserve, but I told him if he worked hard from day one, he would play more than last season. He's doing well, behaving well and working well."

Obviously, so far Mourinho and JT have kept their parts of the bargain to the letter, seeing as the latter has already played as many league matches as he did throughout the acrimonious Rafa Benitez interim reign, which is a clear indication of the managerial acumens of the two coaches, the chasm in man-management skills; and an indictment of sorts on the fatter one of the two!

Quizzed further on the birthday boy's longevity in the game, The Special One refused to put a time frame on when he thinks JT should retire.

"At John's age players can reach a level of stability when they remain the same - 33, 34, 35, 36," he intimated.

"I look at [Inter Milan full-back] Javier Zanetti in 2008 and in 2012 and he's the same. Other guys are not the same from one season to the next for some reason.

"Players have to enjoy themselves and play with the same ambition. They have to enjoy the moment and not be worried about one more or one less pound in their contract."

Vintage Mourinho, you'd say. But do you think Terry deserves the game time and the 'untouchable' status he's currently enjoying this term?

Or perhaps, in some weird way, you reckon the Fat One was spot on attempting to retire Captain, Leader, Legend amidst the national cacophony of calls for his return to the Three Lions set-up; albeit prematurely?

Whatever you say though, lest I forget, here at Vital Chelsea we wish our Captain Fantastic a happy birthday ... and many happy returns from The Britannia.

Firstly....... A very happy birthday to John Terry !! Our Captain. Leader. Legend. #JT26 #OnlyOneJohnTerry

Secondly, last season was no question JT's worst without a doubt. An injury to the knee didn't help matters. Instead of surgery to heal quicker, a rehab and rest program was drawn up. He came back but was still bothered by it. Of course was not preferred by Rafa, and things didn't improve much. A full pre season has restored his fitness and confidence along with match time this season. hoping he finishes this season with a bang, not to mention capp off his B'day today with a win and maybe a trademark JT header. #ktbffh

“For John Terry, dying on the pitch would be an honor. You’d have to kill him and he might still play.” – L Felipe Scolari

well has nothing to do with rafa, was terry's sloppy form and injuries.

Rafa DID NOT DESTROY ANYTHING. He just abstained from Terry-worship! If only Mourinho could do same with Lampard.

"RAFA DESTROYED TERRY'S CONFIDENCE"...really??maybe if you were in rafas' shoes you would have played an out of form JT throughout the season!

Happy birthday to our captain, JT.... a true legend.. And my respect goes out to Nelson Mandela as he departs to eternity.... if only most of us here and in the world at large can honor his legacy and imbibe one or two things from his way of life, virtues and principles.. We love you Madiba, you are a gift to the world and we will surely miss your good heart and spirit....

Funny lot, I'm sure those quotes were the writer's quotes; and not Mourinho's! Problem? Comprehension! Or more unfortunately, commenting without actually reading an article. Lol
