Chelsea took all three points in a thrilling encounter with Liverpool this afternoon.
Chelsea got the action underway but were to fall behind to an early goal. A matter of minutes into the game, Eto`o fouled Henderson, outside of the area. When the ball was floated in by Courtinho, a tussle between Ivanovic and Suarez saw the ball fall invitingly for Skrtel to slam in into the net from four yards out.
The Blues responded well and Lampard thought he`d struck the equalizer when from twenty-five yards out his shot appeared destined for the top corner of the net. Unfortunately Mignolet had other ideas and somehow tipped it over the bar.
But with 17 minutes on the clock Chelsea did draw level when a swift counter-attack saw the ball fed, by Oscar, to Hazard who smashed in a sumptuous curling shot from just outside the area.
Chelsea were now playing some fine attacking football and Luiz, fed by Willian, ballooned a shot way over the bar. Liverpool, pushing forward, saw Allen burst into the six yard box but Cahill was on hand to produce a great saving tackle. On the half-hour mark Ivanovic limped off to be replaced by Cole.
Thirty-four minutes into the game Chelsea edged ahead for the first time. The goal came after Luiz chipped a ball out wide to Azpilicueta and his ball in was worked into the danger area by Oscar for Eto`o to nudge the ball towards the goal, Mignolet could only shovel the bar into the net just inside the post.
As half time approached, Cech was forced into a save from Allen, as he burst into the area and with the three added minutes played out, Chelsea had the lead at half time.
Half Time - Chelsea 2 Liverpool 1
Chelsea emerged for the second half without Lampard who had picked up a thigh strain, Mikel replaced him.
The half didn`t get off to the best of starts with Terry and Luiz picking up yellow cards, the card picked up by the Brazilian meaning he`ll serve a one-game suspension.
Liverpool, pushing forward, tried to get back on level terms ad so nearly did when Cole conceded a free kick and from the resulting ball thrown into the box, Sakho saw his header loop against the cross bar.
Chelsea had a chance to put the game to bed when a superb through ball from Eto`o saw Hazard presented with a chance but the Belgian was caught in two minds and eventually saw a shot go wide.
Eto`o was the next to benefit from some good approach play when he was put through by Hazard but his powerful shot, towards the near post, was turned over the bar by Mignolet.
Suarez, having a relatively quiet game, saw Cech easily cope with a volley from the edge of the area before Chelsea dealt comfortably with two free kicks our opponent won just outside the area. Eto`o earned a free kick for Chelsea but Luiz free kick hit the wall and any danger was averted.
Oscar, coming more and more into the game, saw a shot skim past the post with Cech then being forced to turn a deflected shot, from Johnson, around his own post.
Hazard, diving in from the left flank, drove a shot against the side netting before Cahill took Suarez out with a do-or-die tackle that saw the defender booked. Jose made a late change, bringing on Torres for a limping Eto`o and the substitute almost scored, driving in along the line and forcing Mignolet to save low down.
Meanwhile Chelsea were fortunate to survive a penalty appeal when Eto`o clearly fouled Suarez after Azpilicueta had won the ball off of the Uruguayan.
In four minutes of stoppage time Chelsea wound the clock down but Oscar and Lucas were involved in a spat that saw Oscar booked.
