Juan Mata still has a key role to play

As Chelsea continue their quest for trophies.

I really hope that when the transfer window slams shut Mata is still a Chelsea player. He will be needed to help us win the title.

A lot has been made about his performance in the Southampton game and his reaction to being substituted, some people were unimpressed with his performance and his attitude when he was took off. I strongly disagree on both parts, he didn't play that badly and was unlucky to be taken off so early.

If I were Mourinho I'd be delighted with his reaction, as to me it shows a player who is desperate to be out on the pitch, a player should never be happy when being taken off. Unfortunately he hasn't reached the level he was at the last two seasons, and in my opinion it's because he's had a lot less game time.

I firmly believe if Mata was given a run of games he'd quickly get back to his best. A good example is Adebayor, he hardly featured under AVB and when he did come on he didn't do much, but since Sherwood has been in charge he's had a run of games, and is starting to look near his best.

The form of Oscar and Willian is making it difficult for Mata to get in the team. I think Oscar could play deeper where Lampard plays and Mata could play behind the striker. Imagine a line-up featuring Hazard, Oscar, Willian and Mata, that creative quartet would frighten most teams.

Can anyone else see Oscar in a deeper role?

As the games start piling up, squad rotation will be important so hopefully Mata can play a few games and prove all his doubters wrong.

It depends on what system Jose employs, for his first choice 11. So far he has tinkered with the '3' behind the striker. Hazard and Oscar are regulars, and Willian seems to be stepping up now. They are direct and more pacy in attack and track back. Their transitional play is very quick and suits Jose's style. Including Mata means changing the system, which I don't think Jose will do. I can see Oscar at CM easily, creating space for Mata at No. 10 flanked by Hazard and Willian. But I think chances of it happening are remote.

I think playing mata just behind d striker while oscar plays as a deep-lying playmaker wud be ideal, bt that wud only happen and find success in a free-flowing side, mayb i should say, a possession-based side not in a rigid, defensive nd counter-attacking side like d present chelsea(under mourinho).

A key role on the bench. He keeps it nice and warm.

the only way that kind of formation and personnel can be utilized effectively is when we are playing against a team that parks the yatch, if we use them against a counter attacking physical side, we'll be ripped apart

@Desmond, good deal for Kenneth if true... Read today that Keshi wants him playing regular footy prior to the World Cup.

He's still our most creative player and will be back to his best soon.

Been reading articles and comments here for a while, glad I can finally contribute. No disrespect to anyone but most people here are hypocritical in their views. Why? well, you say lamps and the other old guards shouldn't play based on their past exploits or reputation but you want mata to play coz he's been our POTY past two seasons.Based on current form he is rightly benched

seems like Mourinho is trying to make Mata force his way out of the club so he doesnt lose some credibility with the fans. Mata's departure is inevitable either this month or in summer. Shame the lad is the best player we have

I believe that if Mata is given a chance he will shine. I'm not saying he should be playing because of what he did last year, I think he should be playing because he's our most creative player, and has a lot to offer.

Sell Mata for anywhere from 35-40 and fund the move for Rooney...
