The Matic, Mikel and DM Situation

The Matic, Mikel and DM Situation

I'd never thought I would be writing an article like this again.

However, circumstances and situations of recent just forced me to. I hope it will be a great read.

Chelsea supporters, like most supporters, have been talking about our midfield conundrum since the beginning of last season. This season too has not been an exception. However, I believe we all are quite happy with this season knowing we have quality players helping us in midfield.

Our major issue over the years has been the DM position(s). Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Mikel, Romeu, MVG and most recently, Matic. These players have competed for the two slots available in the pivot role. Personally, I think we have not done badly considering we won the double 2 years ago with even less players in this role.

Today, with the arrival of Matic, I see a different Chelsea. Competition for the 2 pivot positions has stiffened and of course, players have to earn their place in the starting 11. This is good for the club. What totally baffles me is the idea that Matic coming back home automatically puts an end to Mikel's football.

This is so painful considering the mighty efforts (unappreciated) put in week in, week out by Mikel. This is not right. I saw a different player in Matic last night against City and I was impressed. But to say Mikel will never be able to do this is false. To say Ramires cannot produce the same performance is wrong.

It all just depends on the way the manager sets up his team. It is never personal. I hate to compare players as there are no two players playing the same way. Everyone has their unique way. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Matic, Mikel Ramires, MVG, Lampard are all great players in their own rights. There is no need to heat things up. At the end of the day, we have a team to support. Chelsea all the way!

In order of DM protection - matic>luiz>ramires>mikel>lampard. I have yet to see MVG healthy and competing at a PL level. But I'd like to see lampard and mikel join other clubs past this season.

Chelsea can do better than holding onto Mikel. Chelsea doesn't have to settle.

To the author.. you capture my sentiments exactly. Our fan base on VC in particular are incredibly capable of generating controversy, confusion and infighting no matter the result. We just got a great victory over arguably the best side in the BPL at their own place which was prior to that an impregnable citadel where other teams went to get a full scale ass (pardon my language) whooping that put their managers at least temporarily on the hot seat. Rather than celebrate the victory and acknowledge that these sort of victories are a team effort and thus every team member deserves credit somehow some persons saw it as the appropriate time to castigate one player at the expense of another. It was the same way even after the great "Bavarian Miracle" two Mays ago when there were persons on this site griping about "how" we won and giving RDM grief about that and actually on that day suggesting Roman sack him that very summer to get someone like Pep so we could win "pretty". It is a rather disturbing trait that based on my little experience surveying other fan related blogs seems so particular to our VC community and i honestly dont understand why but i have just learnt to accept it as the way things are here and move on.

Ddrogba atleast in games we are chasing and being controlled or bpssed around Mikel is not getting us out of sticky situations like Lampard can. Just look at us against Barca under RDM. Mikel groupies seem to miss the fact that the Barca games show more Lamps greatness and Mikels plainness.

Matic showed what a really dynamic DM player is at his best. He was seemingly everywhere but he was disciplined in defense. Very strong in duels and he has a cracking shot. For me his name needs to be first of the DM players we have. If Luiz is keeping his cool, he isn't a bad player in a DM position. Assuming players are rested we have a nice pack in midfield now. We only need to get the strikers to find the net continuously.

GabeU you can't deny some of that is back lash for the unreasonable and irrationally biased fans who dance around questions when it comes to judging Mikel. I am sure every fan is more happy about the victory than anything but clearly Matic made a difference and proved some ppl here who called him a "left footed Mikel" wrong.

I don't think it's personal at all. Mikel just doesn't play like Matic. And if he does, why did it never come out before? If Matic was the one player that unlocked the door, why couldn't it have been Mikel? Instead of Matic + Luiz, why could it not have been Mikel + Luiz? One must really thing hard about this! I don't believe that most people want to see the good chap Mikel sidelined out of hatred or spite - but rather most understand that this team is evolving away from the style of football that Mikel brings to the middle of our squad. This is one of the remnants of Mourinho 1.0. And while it worked well then, it is not going to work well in the future. So, no matter how much you might not like it, dumping Mikel will be the right thing to do. No disrespect to his service. No more than those who wish to dump Lampard. Because Lampard still contributes something valuable - albeit different than Mikel. But still, his time is come...

pointless rant teepie I'm afraid; as some would readily say you're telling us what we already know about the Mikel situation, thus an irrelevant and wrongly-timed article...considering the general mood of the club! If in doubt don't hesitate to ask our friend @KAKUfrank.... Chelsea needs a regista, aka deep-lying playmaker, and will surely be getting one in the summer! Sadly?someone will have to leave to accommodate the newcomer; whoever that'll be is anyone's guess. Lol

If the DM position was strictly for protecting the back four, Mikel would probably be my number one choice. That was the case a few years ago. Not so anymore. Club strategies evolve. How many managers have we had since then? Now we have Mourinho, who wants a counter-attacking football style. That cannot be accomplished with a DM that has shown that he is virtually incapable of putting a forward pass to jump start a counter attack. Now, maybe he can. Maybe the arrival of Matic will open his eyes and he'll be able to make the adjustment. But I'm getting tired of hearing "the persecution" arguments. It's CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. The DM position is where Chelsea have been weakest for a while now. So, of course, it's going to be talked about week in/week out. The strikers suffer the same. Just because we win, doesn't mean we close our eyes, put on a big smile, say 'great job', and stick our heads in the sand until next match.

Of Course the advent of a new pure DM presents the demise of Mikel. Matic won best player in Portugal, came here in his first start to win Man of the Match and some of you want to xompare such a playet (beast) to mikel? Some of you speak like Mikel works the hardest in the team? When did Mikel ever win official Man of the Match? He does his best, fine now we have someone who doed 10 times better. Why bring up Mikel now? Are his supporters afraid? Trust Jose, he saw what starting Mikel against West ham caused when u have 11 defenders to push through and Mikel is sending back passes because he 'disciplined'. This article is only going to bring the Mikel bashers like me out of our holes. I love chelsea and If I feel a player is a constant under performer I will voice it out. Even rival fans were crying out about Matic , have any one ever given Mikel a quarter of the plaudits Matic got in his first full start? Does Mikel work more than ramirez or matic? There so he 's now a bench player, he"ll come in when we need to close down games. That will be his use.

Teepie is really angry about my earlier post, hence his response...and that draws my curiousity, have you ever been this angry over the clamour to sell any player? the likes of Essien, Malouda, Kalou,Bosingwa, Mereiles, even Mata?...Of course you found it offensive when i said Nigerians are defensive about Mikel and here you are proving me RIGHT once again. If a player like Mata can be sold and we all move on, why not Mikel? We can do well without him. I repeat, i dont hate Mikel, but i dont see the reason why we should keep him on the bench come next season cos it's obvious he wont make the first 11...Ramires came and prove his worth to us and now he's unbenchable, has Mikel been able to make himself that untouchable? Moses did his best when we needed him to yet he was loaned out without any fuss...I'm sure we wont regret selling Mikel, if there's anyone i think we should regret selling, it would be Sturridge (as selfish as he is, he could have been nurtured and cultured).

Finally!!! We are starting to stand up against the overly irrational babying of Mikel. His groupies need to understand we got nothing against the man personally, we just don't value him as a player that much. Also they need to understand they are the ones who get us going more than Mikel himself, like damn I can't wait for the day when Mikel is gone and we don't have to deal with them anymore. I wonder how many of them are truly Chelsea fans and will remain if we lose a whole certain demographic of players.

This is why I told Merlin to drop the Mikel articles. The pro-Mikel and no-Mikel start going at it. They will be another one tomorrow or next week or right after Mikel has a good or bad game and it becomes boring and repetitive yet again. Should have left HGH's masterpiece upfront and the GabeU one. The individual articles get very ugly especially for squad players like Mikel, Lampard, Moses, Luiz and co.

We win vs City and do not allow them to score AT HOME yet article over article churned out on a player who has been a bench warmer?! Incredible. FFS.Quite frankly with Matic cup-tied and Luiz a bit too erratic for me although Luiz did do really good vs City as the game progressed surely we would want this guy to step up and get the job done? I really see no point in slating Mikel seeing as we yet need him.

Mikel's performances will earn him a place in the starting XL, or a place on the bench...... my opinion is that we should sell him when we can get something for him..... the competition for the two pivot spots is between Matic, Ramires, Lampard and Luiz

We have another jewel on loan to Mestalla and I firmly believed with him and Matic in pivot, we could have a strong partnership for tough away game. Both could assured our back four being defended and capable of launching an attack. I would rather see Luiz in central back role.

next season matic romeu mvg luiz/new signing.....should be the players who should play in the pivot....neither mikel rami and lamps should be playing in that position....mikel has to be sold...not good enough for chelsea style....and rami shouldnt be in starting 11 he could be a good squad player but he shouldnt be starting...
