The Matic, Mikel and DM Situation
I'd never thought I would be writing an article like this again.
However, circumstances and situations of recent just forced me to. I hope it will be a great read.
Chelsea supporters, like most supporters, have been talking about our midfield conundrum since the beginning of last season. This season too has not been an exception. However, I believe we all are quite happy with this season knowing we have quality players helping us in midfield.
Our major issue over the years has been the DM position(s). Essien, Lampard, Ramires, Mikel, Romeu, MVG and most recently, Matic. These players have competed for the two slots available in the pivot role. Personally, I think we have not done badly considering we won the double 2 years ago with even less players in this role.
Today, with the arrival of Matic, I see a different Chelsea. Competition for the 2 pivot positions has stiffened and of course, players have to earn their place in the starting 11. This is good for the club. What totally baffles me is the idea that Matic coming back home automatically puts an end to Mikel's football.
This is so painful considering the mighty efforts (unappreciated) put in week in, week out by Mikel. This is not right. I saw a different player in Matic last night against City and I was impressed. But to say Mikel will never be able to do this is false. To say Ramires cannot produce the same performance is wrong.
It all just depends on the way the manager sets up his team. It is never personal. I hate to compare players as there are no two players playing the same way. Everyone has their unique way. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Matic, Mikel Ramires, MVG, Lampard are all great players in their own rights. There is no need to heat things up. At the end of the day, we have a team to support. Chelsea all the way!
