The End Of An Era?

Ashley Cole is not a man accustomed to subtleties. When he was removed from the starting line-up in favour of Azpilicueta earlier in the season, Cole voiced his doubts about the club on the social media site, Twitter. To be fair, he has been a model professional on the pitch for Chelsea, even if his off-pitch exploits are a little more unsavoury.

Therefore, Cole shouldn't be too heavily damaged by Mourinho's latest comments on the 33 year old's future. The Chelsea boss has come out and said that Cole will not get more game time despite the looming prospect of a World Cup.

There has been much scrutiny over the left back's place in the England set-up, with Leighton Baines a commonly touted rival for that spot in the team. Mourinho's words will do nothing to appease an undoubtedly anxious Cole.

With the speculation growing over the futures of Lampard, Terry and Cech along with Cole, does this represent the end of an era for Chelsea? Should we be looking to begin the transition of these players out of the team or do they have more to offer?

Up the Blues!

yes to all the players you mentioned besides cole as he is the only one falling short right now. I think his legs can hardly cope with bomping forward and coming back to defend. It will be best if he concentrates on either attacking or just defending like azpi is doing.

It looks like he'll be moved on. Tremendous perfomer for the club, a legend for us always. #ashleyCole

Being treated badly by the club he is still twice as good as Azpi at left back, who should be playing on the right. Ivanovich should be centre back alongside Cahill if Terry is injured, rather than Luiz who should be playing for Leyton Orient.

All good things must come to an end and clearly the handwriting is on the wall..This will almost certainly be Ashleys last season with us. Sadly for him i am certain he isnt starting for the three Lions in Brazil and the way things are going may not even make the squad. It appears that Luke Shaw will be got this summer to assume his mantle but the big question for me is who the back up will be..Cesar is too good to be playing back up LB..he needs to be competing with Iva for the RB position which is his natural position and at which he offers so much more. That raises the question of whether Jose will recall PVA or Ryan as the LB back up. Left to me considering how many association trained players we may end up losing this summer and the fact that we dont even have our full complement of such players right now for the squad both for the BPL and CL campaigns i would argue that we recall both and can actually use PVA in a more advanced role on the left flank. It will be interesting to see what Jose does about this in the summer.

@Blueheart9 honestly my sentiments on this are not very far from yours except i think Luiz should be deployed in the mid field to partner matic which is where his greatest utility is. I think Cesar has been way more effective than Cole as LB but he offers so much more at RB and honestly i dont feel Cole is washed up as an LB..he has clearly lost a step and so i would deploy him as a defensive full back to go beyond the mid way line very in frequently and ensure his attacking left wing player provides defensive assistance for him when needed while using the RB whether Cesar or Iva for more advanced roles of overlapping and providing greater width on attacks. However i am not a pro footie coach and Jose is one of the very best..he bought Cole at the early point of his career from the gunners..He knows him better than any of us and sees his body language and effort level in training so he clearly sees something that we dont and i trust his judgement on the matter though i dont neccesarily agree with it.

I'm cool like cucumber if Cole, Cech, Lampard, Mikel, Torres, Ba, Eto'o, Hilario all leave CFC. Terry imo has earned another contract. The end of an era? Maybe No. The beginning of the end? By all means Yes.

Not that I support total nonchalant attitude about losing legends or loyal players but asside from Cech which of those players do you think we should hang on to and not hinder the new gen?

Come on chaps I`m only joking, Leyton Orient are quite strong in the central defensive position. Haha. Luiz is a great footballer but not as a defender.

Cole, Mikel, Ba, Eto'o, Torres and Hilario..GONE...Cech to mentor Courtois for 1 year and split the games 50/50, then Courtois takes over..Cech will not want to be a back-up and he can leave with the most respectful grace. Terry deserves another year. I would give Lampard another year as a back-up in the #10 role or shadow striker role. If JM sticks with this stupid 4-2-3-1 (he doesn't have the players for it) and Lampard is forced to remain in the pivot...then Lampard can move on to the MLS...Torres can be sold or used as a make-weight. Good attitude but provides nothing in the attack. Ramires needs to be a back-up player and to provide defensive support when needed. CFC lacks offense and Ramires brings nothing against most teams that park the bus agains CFC.
